A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium (strain Y9T) was isolated from a contaminated culture of the phototrophic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris, and was investigated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Y9T belonged to the order Rhizobiales in the Alphaproteobacteria. Comparison of phylogenetic data indicated that it was most closely related to Pleomorphomonas oryzae (98.5 % similarity of 16S rRNA gene sequence), and the phylogenetic distance from any other species of the order Rhizobiales with a validly published name was greater than 7.5 % (i.e. less than 92.5 % similarity). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10 and the major fatty acids were C18 : 1, C16 : 0, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and C18 : 0. The G+C content of genomic DNA of strain Y9T was 65.1 mol%. The results of DNA–DNA hybridization in combination with chemotaxonomic and physiological data demonstrated that strain Y9T represents a novel species within the genus Pleomorphomonas, for which the name Pleomorphomonas koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Y9T (=KCTC 12246T=NBRC 100803T)

A Gram-reaction-negative, chemo-organotrophic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium (strain Gsoil 080T) was isolated from soil collected in a ginseng field in Pocheon Province, South Korea, and was investigated by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain Gsoil 080T was related most closely to Inquilinus limosus strains AU0476T and AU1979 (98.9 % similarity to both). Strain Gsoil 080T shared ≤91.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strains of other recognized species examined. The genus Inquilinus belongs to the family Rhodospirillaceae in the order Rhodospirillales, class Alphaproteobacteria. The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10 and the major fatty acids were summed feature 7 (C18 : 1 ω9c/ω12t/ω7c) and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain Gsoil 080T was 69.9 mol%. The level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain Gsoil 080T and I. limosus LMG 20952T was 12 %. The results of genotypic analyses in combination with chemotaxonomic and physiological data demonstrated that strain Gsoil 080T represents a novel species of the genus Inquilinus, for which the name Inquilinus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 080T (=KCTC 12574T =LMG 23638T).

A beige-pigmented bacterial strain (JM-310T), isolated from the healthy internal root tissue of 4-week-old cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, cultivar ‘DES-119’) in Tallassee (Macon county), Alabama, USA, was studied taxonomically. The isolate produced small rod-shaped cells, which showed a Gram-negative staining behaviour. A comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate revealed 99.2, 98.8, 98.7, 98.7, 98.1 and 97.6 % similarity to the 16S rRNA gene sequences of the type strains of Variovorax paradoxus, Variovorax boronicumulans, Variovorax ginsengisoli, Variovorax soli, Variovorax defluvii and Variovorax dokdonensis, respectively. In phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain JM-301T was placed within the monophyletic cluster of Variovorax species. The fatty acid profile of strain JM-310T consisted mainly of the major fatty acids C16 : 0, C10 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 4 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH/C16 : 1ω7c/t). The quinone system of strain JM-310T contained predominantly ubiquinone Q-8 and lesser amounts of Q-7 and Q-9. The major polyamine was putrescine and the diagnostic polyamine 2-hydroxyputrescine was detected as well. The polar lipid profile consisted of the major lipids phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphospatidylglycerol and several unidentified lipids. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments with V. paradoxus LMG 1797T, V. boronicumulans 1.22T, V. soli KACC 11579T and V. ginsengisoli 3165T gave levels of relatedness of < 70 %. These DNA–DNA hybridization results in addition to differential biochemical properties indicate clearly that strain JM-310T is a member of a novel species, for which the name Variovorax gossypii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JM-310T ( = LMG 28869T = CIP 110912T = CCM 8614T).

A novel aerobic, chemoheterotrophic bacterium, strain YO-36T, isolated from the rhizoplane of an aquatic plant (a reed, Phragmites australis) inhabiting a freshwater lake in Japan, was morphologically, physiologically and phylogenetically characterized. Strain YO-36T was Gram-negative and ovoid to rod-shaped, and formed pinkish hard colonies on agar plates. Strain YO-36T grew at 20–40 °C with optimum growth at 30–35 °C, whilst no growth was observed at 15 °C or 45 °C. The pH range for growth was 5.5–8.5 with an optimum at pH 6.5. Strain YO-36T utilized a limited range of substrates, such as sucrose, gentiobiose, pectin, gellan gum and xanthan gum. The strain contained C16 : 0, C16 : 1, C14 : 0 and C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids and menaquinone-12 as the respiratory quinone. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 62.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YO-36T belonged to the candidate phylum OP10 comprised solely of environmental 16S rRNA gene clone sequences except for two strains, P488 and T49 isolated from geothermal soil in New Zealand; strain YO-36T showed less than 80 % sequence similarity to strains P488 and T47. Based on the phylogetic and phenotypic findings, a new genus and species, Armatimonas rosea gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed for the isolate (type strain YO-36T  = NBRC 105658T  = DSM 23562T). In addition, a new bacterial phylum named Armatimonadetes phyl. nov. is proposed for the candidate phylum OP10 represented by A. rosea gen. nov., sp. nov. and Armatimonadaceae fam. nov., Armatimonadales ord. nov., and Armatimonadia classis nov.

An oval to rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, phototrophic bacterium, strain JA738T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from a pink pond. Strain JA738T was non-motile and had vesicular-type intracellular photosynthetic membranes. Bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the spheroidene series were present as the major photosynthetic pigments. Strain JA738T required thiamine and pantothenate for growth. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω5c, C18 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c11-methyl; minor amounts of C10 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 0 were also present. The major quinone was Q-10 and major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified sulfolipids (SL1–2). Phylogenetic analysis on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JA738T clustered with species of the genus Rhodovulum in the class Alphaproteobacteria . Strain JA738T was most closely related to Rhodovulum adriaticum DSM 2781T (96.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and other members of the genus Rhodovulum (<96.1 %). On the basis of phenotypic and molecular genetic evidence, it is proposed that strain JA738T should be classified as a novel species of the genus Rhodovulum for which the name Rhodovulum bhavnagarense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JA738T ( = DSM 24766T = KCTC 15110T).

A Gram-positive, non-motile, rod- or coccoid-shaped Isoptericola-like bacterium, strain DS-3T, was isolated from a soil sample from Dokdo, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic approach. The organism grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 7.0–8.0. Strain DS-3T had the peptidoglycan type based on l-lys–d-Asp, and galactose, glucose, rhamnose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars. It contained MK-9(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and two unidentified glycolipids. The DNA G+C content was 74.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-3T was most closely related to members of the genus Isoptericola. Similarity values between the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strain DS-3T and the type strains of Isoptericola species ranged from 98.0 to 98.4 %. DNA–DNA relatedness values (11–23 %) and differential phenotypic properties demonstrated that strain DS-3T was distinguishable from recognized Isoptericola species. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, strain DS-3T represents a novel species in the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-3T (=KCTC 19128T=CIP 108921T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain NEAU-QY2T, was isolated from the leaves of Sonchus oleraceus L. specimen, collected from Wuchang, Heilongjiang Province, China. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic position of this strain. The organism formed single spores with rough surfaces on substrate mycelia. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain NEAU-QY2T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora and formed a monophyletic clade with its closest related strains Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (99.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), Plantactinospora veratri NEAU-FHS4T (98.8 %) and Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.7 %), an association that was supported by a bootstrap value of 90 % in the neighbour-joining tree and also recovered with the maximum-likelihood algorithm. However, DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain NEAU-QY2T and the three closely related strains were below 70 %. With reference to phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic data and DNA–DNA hybridization results, strain NEAU-QY2T was distinguished from closely related strains and is classified as representing a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora, for which the name Plantactinospora sonchi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-QY2T ( = CGMCC 4.7216T = JCM 30345T).

Strain 43PT was isolated as an l-glucose-utilizing bacterium from soil in Japan. Cells of the strain were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic and non-motile cocci. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain showed high similarity to that of Paracoccus limosus (98.5 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that this strain belongs to the genus Paracoccus. Strain 43PT contained Q-10 as the sole isoprenoid quinone. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c or C18 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0, and C18 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c, C10 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 2 were detected as minor components. The DNA G+C content of strain 43PT was 64.1 mol%. Strain 43PT contained the major polar lipids phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unknown aminolipid and two unknown glycolipids. The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain 43PT and the six related type strains of the genus Paracoccus, including P. limosus, was below 23 %. Based on the chemotaxonomic and physiological data and the values of DNA–DNA relatedness, especially the ability to assimilate l-glucose, this strain should be classified as a representative of a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus laeviglucosivorans sp. nov. (type strain 43PT = JCM 30587T = DSM 100094T) is proposed.

A novel actinomycete, strain 30EHST, was isolated from the rhizospheric soil under an elephant ear plant (Caladium bicolor) in Jomthong district, Bangkok, Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 30EHST fell within the cluster of the genus Streptosporangium . Chemical composition analysis confirmed that the strain represented a member of the genus Streptosporangium even though this strain produced a tightly packed single spore on aerial hyphae. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that strain 30EHST was most closely related to Streptosporangium fragile NBRC 14311T (98.1 %), Streptosporangium carneum NBRC 15562T (97.8 %) and Streptosporangium violaceochromogenes NBRC 15560T (97.4 %). The DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain 30EHST and the above three strains were below 70 %. Based on combined data for phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness and physiological characteristics, it was concluded that strain 30EHST should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Streptosporangium . We propose the name Streptosporangium jomthongense sp. nov., with the type strain 30EHST ( = BCC 53154T = NBRC 110047T). An emended description of the genus Streptosporangium is also proposed.

Strain 104T was isolated from a traditional salt-fermented seafood in Korea. It was a Gram-positive, non-motile, coccus-shaped bacterium. It formed lemon–yellow, opaque colonies that were circular with entire margins. Optimal growth occurred at 30–37 °C, pH 7–8 and in the presence of 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences from strain 104T and reference species of the genus Kocuria indicated that strain 104T formed an independent line. The G+C content of the chromosomal DNA was 60.6 mol%. MK-7 was the major menaquinone and the predominant fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (76.7 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (10.9 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (4.5 %). Strain 104T was most closely related to Kocuria rhizophila TA68T (98.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strain 104T and K. rhizophila TA68T was 14.1±3.4 %. On the basis of this polyphasic taxonomic analysis, strain 104T appears to represent a novel species in the genus Kocuria. The name Kocuria salsicia sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 104T (=KACC 21128T=JCM 16361T).

A novel gliding marine bacterium (strain 59SAT) was isolated from marine barnacle debris. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a distinct lineage within the genus Aureispira in the family ‘Saprospiraceae’. The DNA G+C content of strain 59SAT was 38.7 mol%, the major respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the predominant cellular fatty acids were 20 : 4ω6c and 16 : 0. On the basis of the data from DNA–DNA hybridization, physiological and chemotaxonomic analyses and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain 59SAT represents a novel species of the genus Aureispira, for which the name Aureispira maritima sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 59SAT (=IAM 15439T=TISTR 1726T).
