A novel actinomycete, designated strain 06182M-1T, was isolated from a mangrove soil sample collected from Chiayi County in Taiwan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed levels of similarity of 97.0–98.8 % to the type strains of recognized species of the genus Isoptericola. Chemotaxonomic data also supported the placement of strain 06182M-1T within the genus Isoptericola. However, the low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between the novel strain and the type strains of recognized species of the genus Isoptericola, in combination with differential phenotypic data, demonstrate that strain 06182M-1T represents a novel species of the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola chiayiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 06182M-1T ( = BCRC 16888T  = KCTC 19740T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain OU-40T, was isolated from farm soil collected from the Hyderabad region of Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of species of the genus Streptomyces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain OU-40T belonged to the genus Streptomyces, and was related most closely to Streptomyces pactum NBRC 13433T (99.0 % sequence similarity), Streptomyces olivaceus NBRC 12805T (99.0 %) and Streptomyces parvulus NBRC 13193T (98.8 %). Strain OU-40T could be distinguished from the type strains of its closest phylogenetic relatives based on levels of DNA–DNA relatedness and comparison of morphological and phenotypic data. It is therefore concluded that strain OU-40T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces hyderabadensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is OU-40T (=CCTCC AA 209024T =PCM 2692T).

A novel strain, 219820T, whose metabolites were found to be active against tumour cells, was isolated and characterized. The isolate belonged to the genus Streptomyces and had white to grey aerial mycelium and long chains of smooth spores in the aerial mycelium. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 219820T had highest similarity to members of the genus Streptomyces and was most closely, albeit loosely, associated with Streptomyces crystallinus NBRC 15401T (98.624 % similarity), Streptomyces melanogenes NBRC 12890T (98.565 %) and Streptomyces noboritoensis NBRC 13065T (98.564 %). However, DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic data readily distinguished strain 219820T from these phylogenetically related type strains. It is evident from the combination of genotypic and phenotypic data that strain 219820T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces sanyensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 219820T ( = CGMCC 4.5626T  = DSM 42014T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain OU-63T, was isolated from garden soil collected on the campus of Osmania University in Hyderabad, southern India. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of the genus Streptomyces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Streptomyces, and was related most closely to Streptomyces chartreusis NBRC 12753T (98.6 % similarity). However, the mean level of DNA–DNA relatedness between the two strains was only 25±1.73 %. Based on DNA–DNA relatedness, morphological and phenotypic data, strain OU-63T could be distinguished from the type strains of phylogenetically related species. It is therefore considered to represent a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces osmaniensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is OU-63T (=CCTCC AA209025T =PCM 2690T).

Three actinomycetes (strains HKI 0478T, HKI 0479 and HKI 0480) isolated from the surfaces of rocks in the Feengrotten medieval alum slate mine (Thuringia, Germany) were examined in a polyphasic taxonomic study. The following morphological and chemotaxonomic features supported their classification as members of the genus Kribbella: the presence of ll-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan; glucose together with minor amounts of mannose and ribose as the whole-cell sugars; polar lipids comprising phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and unknown phospho- and glycolipids; fatty acid profiles characterized by the predominance of anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 9-methyl; and the presence of MK-9(H4) as the main menaquinone. The isolates had almost identical 16S rRNA gene sequences (99.9–100 %) and were most closely related to the type strains of Kribbella jejuensis (98.9 % sequence similarity), Kribbella swartbergensis and Kribbella solani (both 98.8 %). A wide range of genotypic and phenotypic markers as well as the low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain HKI 0478T and the type strains of K. jejuensis (41.3 %), K. swartbergensis (18.6 %) and K. solani (14.2 %) distinguished the novel strains from their closest phylogenetic neighbours. On the basis of these results, strain HKI 0478T represents a novel member of the genus Kribbella, for which the name Kribbella aluminosa sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HKI 0478T (=DSM 18824T =JCM 14599T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming actinobacterial strain, designated strain TL1T, was isolated from pig manure in Wuhan, China. The cell wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The predominant menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c. The genomic DNA G+C content was 70.9 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TL1T was most closely related to the type strains of Knoellia sinensis (98.5 %), Knoellia subterranea (98.2 %) and Knoellia aerolata (96.9 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values of strain TL1T with the type strains of K. sinensis and K. subterranea were 27.3 and 34.0 %, respectively. Comparison of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics among strain TL1T and related organisms revealed that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Knoellia, for which the name Knoellia flava sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is TL1T ( = CGMCC 1.10749T = KCTC 19810T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated, non-gliding and rod-shaped bacterial strain, SSK2-2T, was isolated from the place where the ocean and a freshwater spring meet at Jeju island, South Korea. Strain SSK2-2T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0–8.0 and in the presence of 2.0–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SSK2-2T fell within the clade comprising the type strains of species of the genus Maribacter, joining the type strain of Maribacter sedimenticola with which it shared 99.4 % similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of other Maribacter species were 94.6–98.2 %. Strain SSK2-2T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0) as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids of strain SSK2-2T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain SSK2-2T was 38.2 mol% and mean levels of DNA–DNA relatedness with the type strains of four phylogenetically related species of the genus Maribacter were 11–24 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain SSK2-2T is separate from other Maribacter species. On the basis of the data presented, strain SSK2-2T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Maribacter, for which the name Maribacter confluentis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SSK2-2T ( = KCTC 42604T = CECT 8869T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, strictly aerobic strain with gliding motility, designated JAMB N27T, was isolated from sediment adjacent to sperm whale carcasses off Kagoshima, Japan, at a depth of 219 m. Strain JAMB N27T contained MK-6 as the major isoprenoid quinone and iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1, C16 : 1 and iso-C17 : 1 as the predominant fatty acids. Casein, chitin, gelatin and starch were degraded. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain JAMB N27T represented a separate lineage within the genus Aquimarina. The DNA G+C content of strain JAMB N27T was 33.1 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain JAMB N27T and type strains of species of the genus Aquimarina were significantly lower than the cut-off value accepted for the definition of a novel species. Therefore, strain JAMB N27T represents a novel species, for which the name Aquimarina macrocephali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JAMB N27T (=JCM 15542T=NCIMB 14508T).

A short-rod-shaped, Gram-negative, non-motile bacterial strain, designated AZO-CT, was isolated from a sample of seawater collected from the Eluanbi coast of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan and was characterized by using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain formed a monophyletic branch at the periphery of the evolutionary radiation occupied by the genus Oceanicola in the order Rhodobacterales of the Alphaproteobacteria. The closest neighbours were Oceanicola batsensis HTCC2597T (95.6 % similarity), Oceanicola nanhaiensis SS011B1-20T (94.5 %) and Oceanicola granulosus HTCC2516T (94.0 %). The predominant fatty acid was 18 : 1ω7c (49.1 %), and significant amounts of 19 : 0 cyclo (24.6 %) and 16 : 0 (14.7 %) were present. The DNA–DNA relatedness of the strain with respect to recognized species of the genus Oceanicola was less than 70 %. The isolate was also distinguishable from members of the genus Oceanicola on the basis of phenotypic and biochemical characteristics. It is evident from the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, therefore, that strain AZO-CT represents a novel species of the genus Oceanicola, for which the name Oceanicola marinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AZO-CT (=LMG 23705T=BCRC 17591T).

A coccoid, non-motile actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 70003T, was isolated from a saline, alkaline, desert-soil sample from Egypt. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the organism formed a distinct phyletic line within the genus Kocuria and was most closely related to Kocuria polaris DSM 14382T (98·6 % sequence similarity) and Kocuria rosea DSM 20447T (98·2 %). Chemotaxonomic data, including the Lys–Ala3 peptidoglycan type, the presence of phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the predominant phospholipids, the presence of MK-8(H2) and MK-9(H2) as the major menaquinones, the predominance of fatty acids ai-C15 : 0 and i-C15 : 0 and the DNA G+C content, also supported the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Kocuria. The low DNA–DNA relatedness with K. polaris DSM 14382T (56·6 %) and K. rosea DSM 20447T (15·5 %) in combination with phenotypic data show that strain YIM 70003T should be classified as a novel species of the genus Kocuria. The name Kocuria aegyptia sp. nov. is proposed, with strain YIM 70003T (=CCTCC AA203006T=CIP 107966T=KCTC 19010T=DSM 17006T) as the type strain.

An actinomycete, strain 4776T, was isolated from soil collected from Emei Mountain in Sichuan Province, China. The taxonomic status of this strain was established using a polyphasic approach. The organism was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of streptomycetes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the novel isolate belongs to the genus Streptomyces and consistently falls into a clade together with Streptomyces prasinopilosus DSM 40098T, Streptomyces prasinus JCM 4603T, Streptomyces bambergiensis DSM 40590T, Streptomyces hirsutus DSM 40095T and Streptomyces cyanoalbus DSM 40198T. However, DNA–DNA relatedness and phenotypic data distinguished strain 4776T from these phylogenetically related type strains. It is therefore concluded that strain 4776T (=CGMCC 4.3504T=DSM 41884T) represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces emeienseis sp. nov. is proposed.
