A Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium, strain Gsoil 355T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in South Korea. In phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain Gsoil 355T showed the highest levels of sequence similarity with respect to Solirubrobacter pauli B33D1T (97.4 %), Conexibacter woesei DSM 14684T (94.2 %) and Patulibacter minatonensis KV-614T (91.8 %). The strain possesses menaquinone MK-7(H4) and contains C16 : 0 and C18 : 0 ω9c as the predominant fatty acids. The DNA G+C content is 71.5 mol%. On the basis of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, strain Gsoil 355T represents a novel species of the genus Solirubrobacter, for which the name Solirubrobacter soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 355T (=KCTC 12628T=LMG 23485T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain WPCB133T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content was 47 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB133T forms an independent lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain WPCB133T was distantly related to Mucilaginibacter kameinonensis SCKT (94.7 % sequence similarity), Mucilaginibacter paludis TPT56T (94.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter gracilis TPT18T (94.4 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain WPCB133T from members of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strain WPCB133T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB133T (=KCTC 12534T =NBRC 101115T). An emended description of the genus Mucilaginibacter is also proposed.

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CW-E 2T, was isolated from a polluted soil sample collected from Jiangsu Province, China. A taxonomic study of the isolate, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was carried out. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 3-OH, i-C17 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 4. The G+C content of the DNA was 37.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CW-E 2T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium for which the name Chryseobacterium flavum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW-E 2T (=KCTC 12877T=CCTCC AB 206147T).

Strain HHS 11T was isolated from a water sample collected from the snout of Hamta glacier located in the Himalayan mountain ranges of India. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses established the affiliation of the isolate to the genus Dyadobacter. HHS 11T possessed 96 and 95 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with respect to Dyadobacter crusticola and Dyadobacter fermentans, respectively. Furthermore, strain HHS 11T differs from D. crusticola and D. fermentans in a number of phenotypic characteristics. These data suggest that strain HHS 11T represents a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter hamtensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HHS 11T (=JCM 12919T=MTCC 7023T).

A marine bacterial strain, FR1064T, was isolated from a surface seawater sample collected off Jeju Island, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria and was related to the genus Glaciecola with 97.6 % sequence similarity to Glaciecola pallidula, its nearest phylogenetic neighbour. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FR1064T and G. pallidula ACAM 615T was 55 %. Cells of the novel isolate were Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile and halophilic, with an optimum sea salts concentration of 4–7 %. The major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0), summed feature 3 and monounsaturated fatty acid C18 : 1. The DNA G+C content was 44 mol%. Several phenotypic characteristics differentiated the novel isolate from all previously described members of the genus Glaciecola. The polyphasic data obtained in this study clearly demonstrate that strain FR1064T represents a novel species of the genus Glaciecola. The name Glaciecola nitratireducens sp. nov. is therefore proposed, with strain FR1064T (=KCTC 12276T=JCM 12485T) as the type strain.

A non-motile, pale-yellow bacterium, designated strain HMD1056T, was isolated from an artificial lake located within the campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Yongin, Korea. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 49.1 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (22.4 %). The major respiratory quinone was MK-7. The DNA G+C content was 46.9 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HMD1056T formed a lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter and was closely related to the type strains of Mucilaginibacter ximonensis (95.4 % sequence similarity), Mucilaginibacter kameinonensis (94.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter paludis (93.4 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HMD1056T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter myungsuensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HMD1056T ( = KCTC 22746T  = CECT 7550T).

Two strains of pink-coloured bacteria, 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T, were isolated from an air sample collected in Korea. The taxonomic status of these novel strains was investigated by means of a polyphasic approach. The novel strains were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming and coccus-shaped bacteria. The DNA G+C contents of strains 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T were 61.0 and 59.3 mol%, respectively. The major isoprenoid quinone for both strains was MK-8. Strain 5516T-9T contained summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, and strain 5516T-11T contained summed feature 3, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, C17 : 1 ω8c and C15 : 1 ω6c as the major fatty acids (>10 %). The polar lipid patterns of both strains were similar, comprising one phospholipid and one aminophospholipid as the major components. Phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that both novel strains were affiliated to the genus Deinococcus. Strain 5516T-9T exhibited the highest sequence similarity with Deinococcus marmoris DSM 12784T (96.8 %) and strain 5516T-11T showed the highest sequence similarity with Deinococcus saxicola DSM 15974T (94.5 %). The sequence similarity between strains 5516T-9T and 5516T-11T was 94.7 %. On the basis of the data presented, it is evident that both strains represent separate novel species of the genus Deinococcus for which the names Deinococcus aerolatus sp. nov. (type strain 5516T-9T=KACC 12745T=JCM 15442T) and Deinococcus aerophilus sp. nov. (type strain 5516T-11T=KACC 12746T=JCM 15443T) are proposed.

A non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain WM78T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 :0, anteiso-C15 :0, C16 :1ω7c and/or C16 :1ω6c and iso-C17 :1 I and/or anteiso-C17 :1 B. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone, phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipid and sym-homospermidine as the major polyamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 62 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WM78T forms evolutionary lineage within the radiation comprising members of the genus Hymenobacter with Hymenobacter gelipurpurascens Txg1T (97.7 % sequence similarity) as its nearest neighbour. A number of phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain WM78T from related members of the genus Hymenobacter. The evidence presented in this study support the designation of strain WM78T as a representative of a novel species in the genus Hymenobacter for which the name Hymenbactor wooponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WM78T ( = KCTC 32528T = JCM 19491T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped, light-yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated strain WPCB159T, was isolated from freshwater samples collected from the Woopo wetland in Korea. The cells were Gram-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were C16 : 1 ω7c (34.8 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.2 %) and C16 : 0 (9.4 %). The DNA G+C content was 44 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB159T forms a lineage within the genus Dyadobacter (family ‘Flexibacteraceae’) and is closely related to Dyadobacter hamtensis HHS 11T (97.8 % sequence similarity) and to other members of the genus Dyadobacter (95.2–96.8 % sequence similarity). The phenotypic characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness data indicate that strain WPCB159T should be distinguished from D. hamtensis HHS 11T. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain WPCB159T represents a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB159T (=KCTC 12537T=NBRC 101116T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 139T, was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in Pocheon Province, South Korea, and was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Gsoil 139T belongs to the family Paenibacillaceae. The greatest sequence similarity was found with respect to the type strains of Paenibacillus hodogayensis (95.6 %) and Paenibacillus koleovorans (93.8 %). The strain showed less than 93.8 % sequence similarity with respect to other species of the genus Paenibacillus. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 48.1 mol%. In addition, the presence of MK-7 as the major menaquinone and C15 : 0 anteiso as a major fatty acid (27.9 %) justifies its affiliation to the genus Paenibacillus. On the basis of its phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 139T represents a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ginsengarvi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 139T (=KCTC 13059T =DSM 18677T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, strain LW1T, was isolated from a water sample collected at a depth of 3.5 m from Lonar Lake, Buldhana district, Maharashtra, India. The cell suspension was reddish-orange due to the presence of carotenoids. Strain LW1T was positive for catalase, oxidase, ornithine decarboxylase and lysine decarboxylase and negative for gelatinase, urease and lipase. Fatty acids were dominated by branched-chain fatty acids (>76 %), with a high abundance of iso-C15 : 0 (48 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (7 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (11 %). Strain LW1T contained MK-4 and MK-7 as the major respiratory quinones and phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major phospholipids. A blast sequence similarity search based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that members of the genera Belliella and Aquiflexum were the nearest phylogenetic neighbours with similarities of 91.8–92.3 %. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that strain LW1T formed a deep-rooted lineage distinct from the clades represented by the genera Belliella, Aquiflexum, Cyclobacterium, Echinicola and Algoriphagus. Based on the above-mentioned phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, it is proposed that strain LW1T represents a novel species in a new genus, Indibacter alkaliphilus gen. nov., sp. nov. (type strain LW1T=KCTC 22604T=CCUG 57479T). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain LW1T is 42.7±1 mol%.
