The taxonomic position of two actinomycete strains, LC2T and LC11T, isolated from a filtration substrate made from Japanese volcanic soil, was determined using a polyphasic approach. The strains grew at temperatures from 5 to 45 °C, on media of pH between 6 and 11 and in the presence of 7 % NaCl. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the two strains formed a distinct evolutionary lineage within the genus Amycolatopsis. On the basis of their morphological, physiological and genotypic characteristics, the isolates are proposed to represent two novel species of the genus Amycolatopsis, for which the names Amycolatopsis echigonensis sp. nov. (type strain LC2T =IAM 15387T =CCTCC AB206019T), and Amycolatopsis niigatensis sp. nov. (type strain LC11T =IAM 15388T =CCTCC AB206020T) are proposed.

Four strains isolated in the last 15 years were revealed to be identical in their 16S rRNA gene sequences to MCRO19, the sequence of which was deposited in GenBank in 1995. In a polyphasic analysis including phenotypic and genotypic features, the five strains (including MCRO19), which had been isolated in four European countries, turned out to represent a unique taxonomic entity. They are scotochromogenic slow growers and are genetically related to the group that included Mycobacterium simiae and 15 other species. The novel species Mycobacterium europaeum sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these five strains. Strain FI-95228T ( = DSM 45397T  = CCUG 58464T) was chosen as the type strain. In addition, a thorough revision of the phenotypic and genotypic characters of the species related to M. simiae was conducted which leads us to suggest the denomination of the ‘Mycobacterium simiae complex’ for this group.

A phenanthrene-degrading bacterium, strain TKPT, was isolated from a fly ash dumping site of the thermal power plant in Panki, Kanpur, India, by an enrichment culture method using phenanthrene as the sole source of carbon and energy. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Sphingobium, as it showed highest sequence similarity to Sphingobium herbicidovorans DSM 11019T (97.3 %) and Sphingomonas cloacae JCM 10874T (96.5 %), compared with only 91–93 % similarity to members of other genera such as Sphingomonas sensu stricto, Novosphingobium, Sphingopyxis and Sphingosinicella. In DNA–DNA hybridization experiments with strains that were closely related phylogenetically and in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequences, i.e. Sphingobium herbicidovorans DSM 11019T and Sphingomonas cloacae JCM 10874T, strain TKPT showed less than 70 % relatedness. Strain TKPT contained sphingoglycolipids SGL-1 and SGL-2 and 18 : 1ω7c as the predominant fatty acid, with 16 : 0 as a minor component and 14 : 0 2-OH as the major 2-hydroxy fatty acid. Thus, phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA hybridization, fatty acid and polar lipid profiles and differences in physiological and morphological features from the most closely related members of the Sphingobium group showed that strain TKPT represents a distinct species of Sphingobium. The name Sphingobium fuliginis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain TKPT (=MTCC 7295T=CCM 7327T). Sphingomonas cloacae JCM 10874T formed a coherent cluster with members of Sphingobium, did not reduce nitrate to nitrite and had a fatty acid profile similar to those of Sphingobium species; hence Sphingomonas cloacae should be transferred to the genus Sphingobium as Sphingobium cloacae comb. nov., with the type strain JCM 10874T (=DSM 14926T).

A non-motile, yellow–orange-pigmented bacterial strain, designated HME6664T, was isolated from Lake Soyang, Republic of Korea. The major fatty acids of strain HME6664T were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 44.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (20.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain HME6664T formed a lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter . Strain HME6664T was closely related to Mucilaginibacter ximonensis (96.7 %), Mucilaginibacter dorajii (96.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter lappiensis (96.3 %). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain HME6664T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter , for which the name Mucilaginibacter soyangensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is HME6664T ( = KCTC 23261T = CECT 7824T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CW-E 2T, was isolated from a polluted soil sample collected from Jiangsu Province, China. A taxonomic study of the isolate, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was carried out. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 3-OH, i-C17 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 4. The G+C content of the DNA was 37.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CW-E 2T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium for which the name Chryseobacterium flavum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW-E 2T (=KCTC 12877T=CCTCC AB 206147T).

Halorubrum distributum (basonym, Halobacterium distributum) is an extremely halophilic, aerobic archaeon isolated from saline soils, which was described on the basis of phenotypic features of several strains. The designated type strain of the species (1mT=VKM B-1733T=JCM 9100T) was shown recently to differ from the other strains. In this study, Halorubrum distributum isolates have been characterized with regard to phenotypic features, polar lipid content, comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences and DNA–DNA hybridization. On the basis of these data, a novel species that includes the other isolates is proposed, with the name Halorubrum terrestre sp. nov. The type strain of this novel species is 4pT (=VKM B-1739T=JCM 10247T). The DNA G+C content of this novel species is 64·2–64·9 mol% (64·4 mol% for the type strain).

Three actinomycetes isolated from the surfaces of rocks in a medieval slate mine were examined in a polyphasic taxonomic study. Chemotaxonomic and morphological characteristics of the isolates were typical of strains of the genus Amycolatopsis. The isolates had identical 16S rRNA gene sequences and formed a distinct phyletic line towards the periphery of the Amycolatopsis mediterranei clade, being most closely related to Amycolatopsis rifamycinica. The organisms shared a wide range of genotypic and phenotypic markers that distinguished them from their closest phylogenetic neighbours. On the basis of these results, a novel species, Amycolatopsis saalfeldensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is HKI 0457T (=DSM 44993T=NRRL B-24474T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, GSW-M6T, was isolated from seawater of Geoje island, Korea, and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain GSW-M6T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. In the neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain GSW-M6T clustered with Thalassobius aestuarii, Thalassobius gelatinovorus and Thalassobius mediterraneus. Strain GSW-M6T exhibited 96.2–96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of these three Thalassobius species. Strain GSW-M6T contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acid. The polar lipid profiles of strain GSW-M6T and the type strains of the three Thalassobius species were similar, with phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified lipid as common major components. The DNA G+C content of strain GSW-M6T was 57 mol%. The mean level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain GSW-M6T and the type strain of Thalassobius gelatinovorus was 17 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, enabled strain GSW-M6T to be differentiated from recognized species of the genus Thalassobius. On the basis of the data presented, strain GSW-M6T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Thalassobius, for which the name Thalassobius maritimus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GSW-M6T ( = KCTC 23347T  = CCUG 60021T).

A novel Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium, designated ZXM137T, was isolated from seawater collected from a coastal region of Qingdao, China, during a massive green algae (Enteromorpha prolifera) bloom. Strain ZXM137T was strictly aerobic and did not accumulate poly-β-hydroxybutyrate. Growth occurred with 0.5–11.0 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 6–9 (optimum of pH 7) and at 4–45 °C (optimum at 28 °C). It contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phospholipids, and an unidentified aminolipid and lipid. The major cellular fatty acids of strain ZXM137T were C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω6c and 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. The DNA G+C content was 60.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain ZXM137T formed a distinct evolutionary lineage within the Roseobacter group in the class Alphaproteobacteria. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence, strain ZXM137T represents a novel species in a new genus, for which the name Huaishuia halophila gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is ZXM137T ( = CGMCC 1.8891T = LMG 24854T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 139T, was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in Pocheon Province, South Korea, and was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Gsoil 139T belongs to the family Paenibacillaceae. The greatest sequence similarity was found with respect to the type strains of Paenibacillus hodogayensis (95.6 %) and Paenibacillus koleovorans (93.8 %). The strain showed less than 93.8 % sequence similarity with respect to other species of the genus Paenibacillus. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 48.1 mol%. In addition, the presence of MK-7 as the major menaquinone and C15 : 0 anteiso as a major fatty acid (27.9 %) justifies its affiliation to the genus Paenibacillus. On the basis of its phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 139T represents a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ginsengarvi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 139T (=KCTC 13059T =DSM 18677T).

A novel strain, designated 311-10T, isolated from soil of Xinjiang, China, was characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The isolate was Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive. The predominant menaquinone of strain 311-10T was MK-7 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate formed a cluster with the genera Pontibacter and [Effluviibacter] in the phylum ‘Bacteroidetes’, with sequence similarities of 93.9–95.6 %. Phylogenetic evidence and the results of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses support the reclassification of [Effluviibacter] roseus as Pontibacter roseus comb. nov. (type strain, SRC-1T=MTCC 7260T=DSM 17521T) and the establishment of a novel species, Pontibacter xinjiangensis sp. nov., with strain 311-10T (=CCTCC AB 207200T=NRRL B-51335T) as the type strain.
