AbstractA Gram-positive, obligately anaerobic coccobacillus, with the white raised circular colony was isolated from the cecum of feral chickens in Brookings, South Dakota, USA. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis suggested that the closest species to strain SW178 was Ruminococcus torques ATCC 27756T (96.94% similarity) that belongs to the family Lachnospiraceae. The genome of strain SW178 is 3.18 Mbp with G+C content of 46.9 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic comparison, we propose that strain SW178 be assigned to the genus Ruminococcus as a novel species, for which the name Ruminococcus catenae is proposed. The type strain is SW178 (= CCOS 1886 T, =DSM 109242T).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, aerobic bacterial strain, designated MJ20T, was isolated from farm soil near Daejeon (South Korea) and was characterized taxonomically by using a polyphasic approach. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain MJ20T belongs to the family Cytophagaceae, class Sphingobacteria, and was related most closely to Dyadobacter fermentans DSM 18053T (98.9 % sequence similarity), Dyadobacter beijingensis JCM 14200T (98.0 %) and Dyadobacter ginsengisoli KCTC 12589T (96.4 %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain MJ20T was 48.5 mol%. The detection of MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and a fatty acid profile with summed feature 4 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and C16 : 1 ω5c as major components supported the affiliation of strain MJ20T to the genus Dyadobacter. The new isolate exhibited relatively low levels of DNA–DNA relatedness with respect to D. fermentans DSM 18053T (mean±sd of three determinations, 47±7 %) and D. beijingensis JCM 14200T (38±8 %). On the basis of its phenotypic and genotypic properties together with phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain MJ20T (=KCTC 22481T =JCM 16232T) should be classified in the genus Dyadobacter as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Dyadobacter soli sp. nov. is proposed.

The taxonomic position of strain JCM 2765T isolated from fermented cane molasses in Thailand was reinvestigated. Strain JCM 2765T was originally identified as representing Lactobacillus buchneri on the basis of biochemical and physiological characteristics. In the present study, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain JCM 2765T demonstrated a low level of similarity with the type strain of L. buchneri (92.5 %) and high levels with those of Lactobacillus collinoides (97.6 %) and Lactobacillus paracollinoides (98.0 %). Ribotyping was applied to investigate the relationships between strain JCM 2765T, L. collinoides and L. paracollinoides. The dendrogram based on ribotyping patterns showed one cluster for six strains of L. paracollinoides, and that strain JCM 2765T and L. collinoides JCM 1123T were each independent. Based on additional phenotypic findings and DNA–DNA hybridization results, strain JCM 2765T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus similis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JCM 2765T (=LMG 23904T).

A novel Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped bacterium, designated DCY100T, was isolated from rhizome of mountain ginseng root in Hwacheon mountain, Gangwon province, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain DCY100T belonged to the genus Microbacterium and was most closely related to Microbacterium ginsengisoli KCTC 19189T (97.9 %), Microbacterium lacus JCM 15575T (97.2 %) and Microbacterium invictum DSM 19600T (97.1 %). The major menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-12. The major polar lipids were found to be diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and one unidentified glycolipid. The major fatty acids (>10.0 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained the amino acids ornithine, alanine, glutamic acid and glycine; whole-cell sugars consisted of glucose, galactose, rhamnose and ribose. The DNA G+C content was 63.6 ± 0.7 mol%. The DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness values between strain DCY100T and Microbacterium ginsengisoli KCTC 19189T, Microbacterium lacus JCM 15575T and Microbacterium invictum DSM 19600T were 36.2 ± 0.4, 22.0 ± 3.0 and 15.3 ± 1.8 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic analyses, the isolate is classified as a representative of a novel species in the genus Microbacterium, for which the name Microbacterium rhizomatis DCY100T is proposed. The type strain is DCY100T ( = KCTC 39529T = JCM 30598T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, aerobic, coccus- to rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain UKS-03T) was isolated from a sediment sample of Ungok Lake in Gochang, Republic of Korea. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain UKS-03T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be related most closely to Nocardioides ginsengisegetis Gsoil 485T (98.5 % similarity), Nocardioides koreensis MSL-09T (98.4 %) and ‘Nocardioides panaciterrulae’ Gsoil 958 (97.3 %). Strain UKS-03T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as the main polar lipids, and iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and C17 : 0 10-methyl as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.9 mol%. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain UKS-03T and N. ginsengisegetis Gsoil 485T, N. koreensis KCTC 19272T and ‘N. panaciterrulae’ Gsoil 958 were 37.5 ± 7.2, 6.8 ± 0.9 and 3.1 ± 0.7 %, respectively. On the basis of the data from this polyphasic taxonomic study, strain UKS-03T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides ungokensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is UKS-03T ( = KACC 18304T = LMG 28591T).

Seven strains of anaerobic Gram-positive cocci isolated from human oral sites were subjected to a comprehensive range of phenotypic and genotypic tests. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strains constituted a homogeneous group that was distinct from species with validly published names, but related to Peptostreptococcus anaerobius. All oral strains tested belonged to this group, whereas all non-oral strains studied were confirmed as P. anaerobius. A novel species, Peptostreptococcus stomatis sp. nov., is proposed to accommodate these oral strains. P. stomatis is weakly saccharolytic and produces acetic, butyric, isobutyric, isovaleric and isocaproic acids as end products of fermentation. The type strain of P. stomatis is W2278T (=DSM 17678T=CCUG 51858T); the G+C content of the DNA of this strain is 36 mol%.

Two novel actinobacteria isolates, designated YIM 70009T and YIM 70081T, were characterized in order to determine their taxonomic position. Cells of strains YIM 70009T and YIM 70081T were cocci, although only the latter were motile. The G+C contents of their DNAs were 64·0 and 64·5 mol%, respectively. On the basis of chemotaxonomic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the two isolates were classified in the genus Nesterenkonia. DNA–DNA hybridization and comparison of phenotypic characteristics revealed that strains YIM 70009T and YIM 70081T differed from each other and from known species. Therefore, it is proposed that they represent two separate novel species of the genus Nesterenkonia: Nesterenkonia sandarakina sp. nov. (type strain, YIM 70009T=CCTCC AA 203007T=DSM 15664T=KCTC 19011T) and Nesterenkonia lutea sp. nov. (type strain, YIM 70081T=CCTCC AA 203010T=DSM 15666T=KCTC 19013T).

The taxonomic position of a novel marine, heterotrophic, gliding, halotolerant and light-pink-pigmented bacterium, designated strain KMM 6221T, was examined by using a polyphasic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain KMM 6221T is affiliated with the genus Echinicola, a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes, with levels of similarity of 94.7–95.0 % to strains of Echinicola pacifica. Growth of strain KMM 6221T was observed with 0–15 % NaCl and at 6–44 °C. The DNA G+C content of strain KMM 6221T was 45.9 mol%. On the basis of molecular distinctiveness supported by phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain KMM 6221T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Echinicola, for which the name Echinicola vietnamensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6221T (=DSM 17526T=LMG 23754T).

The taxonomic position of four newly isolated marine, heterotrophic, gliding, Gram-negative, aerobic, pigmented, agarolytic bacteria was established. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated affiliation of the isolates to the genus Zobellia in the family Flavobacteriaceae. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed that the strains studied represent three distinct and novel species, for which the names Zobellia amurskyensis sp. nov., Zobellia laminariae sp. nov. and Zobellia russellii sp. nov. are proposed, with KMM 3526T (=LMG 22069T=CCUG 47080T), KMM 3676T (=LMG 22070T=CCUG 47083T) and KMM 3677T (=LMG 22071T=CCUG 47084T), respectively, as the type strains.

ABSTRACTA Gram-positive and obligately anaerobic bacterium was isolated from cecal content of feral chickens in Brookings, South Dakota, USA. The microorganism grew at 37-45° C and pH 6-7.5. This strain produced acetic acid as the primary metabolic end product. Major fatty acids were C12:0, C14:0, C14:0 DMA and summed feature 1 (C13:1 at 12-13 and C14:0 aldehyde). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence suggested that strain SW165 belongs to the family Atopobiaceae with the closest relatives being Olsenella profusa DSM 13989T (96.33% similarity), Olsenella umbonate DSM 26220T (96.18%) and Olsenella uli DSM 7084T (96.03%). Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 2.43 Mbp with a G+C content of 67.59 mol%, which is the highest G+C content among members of the genus Olsenella. Phylogenetic and phenotypic comparison indicated that strain SW165 represents a novel species of the genus Olsenella, for which the name Olsenella lakotia sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SW165 (=DSM 107283T).

The taxonomic position of a novel marine, heterotrophic, strictly aerobic, gliding and yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated strain KMM 6059T, was determined. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that this strain represents a member of the genus Mesonia. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data showed that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Mesonia, for which the name Mesonia mobilis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KMM 6059T (=KCTC 12708T=LMG 23670T). An emended description of the genus Mesonia based on the new data is also given.
