In this review, we will discuss the effects of itinerant hole and disorder produced by substitutions on the magnetic states of polycrystalline delafossite oxide CuCrO 2 having a spin-3/2 antiferromagnetic triangular sublattice. First, we will show the effects of hole-doping by the substitution of nonmagnetic Mg 2+ for magnetic Cr 3+ on the physical properties of CuCrO 2, and will discuss the origin of nontrivial promotion of the 120° Néel state due to the coupling between the itinerant hole and localized spin. Next, we will show the effects of disorder introduced by the isovalent substitutions such as the nonmagnetic Ag + substitution for nonmagnetic Cu + and the nonmagnetic Al 3+ one for magnetic Cr 3+, and will discuss the possibility of appearance of unusual magnetic states such as spin liquid or spin nematic states.

Abstract The combined effects of disorder and structural damping on the dynamics of a multi-span beam with slight randomness in the spacing between supports are investigated. A wave transfer matrix approach is chosen to calculate the free and forced harmonic responses of this nearly periodic structure. It is shown that both harmonic waves and normal modes of vibration that extend throughout the ordered, undamped beam become spatially attenuated if either small damping or small disorder is present in the system. The physical mechanism which causes this attenuation, however, is one of energy dissipation in the case of damping but one of energy confinement in the case of disorder. The corresponding rates of spatial exponential decay are estimated by applying statistical perturbation methods. It is found that the effects of damping and disorder simply superpose for a multi-span beam with strong interspan coupling, but interact less trivially in the weak coupling case. Furthermore, the effect of disorder is found to be small relative to that of damping in the case of strong interspan coupling, but of comparable magnitude for weak coupling between spans. The adequacy of the statistical analysis to predict accurately localization in finite disordered beams with boundary conditions is also examined.

ABSTRACTThe effects of disorder on the transport and magnetic properties of pulsed laser deposited La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films were studied. Ion irradiation with 10 MeV I and 6 MeV Si ions was used to produce controlled levels of defects ranging from 0.006 to 0.024 displacements per atom. The peak resistance temperature of the I-irradiated films decreased from 264K for the undamaged film to OK for the 0.016 dpa film. The magnetic ordering temperature decreased from 270K (undamaged) to 130K (0.011 dpa), and remained nearly constant at 130K for higher damage levels. This demonstrates a decoupling of the magnetic and metal-insulator transitions. A characteristic relationship between the peak resistance temperature and activation energy of resistance with the form Tp = 285(1-Δρ/115)0.13, was observed for all films. This characteristic relationship indicates that the range of resistivity and magnetoresistivity values for observed La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 can be explained in terms of disorder-limited polaron hopping.
