Abstract Mn-based alloys exhibit unique properties in the spintronics materials possessing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) beyond the Fe and Co-based alloys. It is desired to figure out the quantum physics of PMA inherent to Mn-based alloys, which have never been reported. Here, the origin of PMA in ferrimagnetic Mn3− δ Ga ordered alloys is investigated to resolve antiparallel-coupled Mn sites using x-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism (XMCD/XMLD) and a first-principles calculation. We found that the contribution of orbital magnetic moments in PMA is small from XMCD and that the finite quadrupole-like orbital distortion through spin-flipped electron hopping is dominant from XMLD and theoretical calculations. These findings suggest that the spin-flipped orbital quadrupole formations originate from the PMA in Mn3− δ Ga and bring the paradigm shift in the researches of PMA materials using x-ray magnetic spectroscopies.

We performed a detailed study on the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of TbCo film by using two kinds of nonmagnetic underlayers, Ta and Ta/Cu with different thicknesses. We found that for both the Tb-rich and Co-rich TbCo alloy films, the PMA strength decreases considerably with the increase of Ta underlayer thickness, while their net saturation magnetization [Formula: see text] exhibit opposite varying trends. The [Formula: see text] value continues to increase for the Co-rich TbCo samples while decrease for the Tb-rich films. Interestingly, an additional Cu layer inserted between the Ta and TbCo layers can efficiently recover the PMA and [Formula: see text]. We attribute such observed variation behaviors of magnetic properties to the increased disordering of Tb magnetic moments at the Ta/TbCo interface, which has been verified by both experimental measurements and micromagnetic simulations.

Strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is observed in annealed Pd/Co/Pd trilayer film. The effect of temperature on alloy formation, the relationship among the atomic/electronic structures, magnetic moments and PMA has been studied.

There is currently great interest in magnetic multilayer (ML) thin films (see e.g.), because they display some interesting magnetic properties. Co/Pd and Co/Au ML systems exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy below certain Co layer thicknesses, which makes them candidates for applications in the field of magneto-optical recording. It has been found that the magnetic anisotropy of a particular system strongly depends on the preparation method (vapour deposition, sputtering, ion beam sputtering) as well as on the substrate, underlayer and deposition temperature. In order to get a better understanding of the correlation between microstructure and properties a thorough cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) study of vapour deposited Co/Pd and Co/Au (111) MLs was undertaken (for more detailed results see ref.).The Co/Pd films (with fixed Pd thickness of 2.2 nm) were deposited on mica substrates at substrate temperatures Ts of 20°C and 200°C, after prior deposition of a 100 nm Pd underlayer at 450°C.
