Two new co-crystals, tetraiodoethylene–phenanthridine (1/2), 0.5C2I4·C13H9N (1) and tetraiodoethylene–benzo[f]quinoline (1/2), 0.5C2I4·C13H9N (2), were obtained from tetraiodoethylene and azaphenanthrenes, and characterized by IR and fluorescence spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. In the crystal structures, C—I...π and C—I...N halogen bonds link the independent molecules into one-dimensional chains and two-dimensional networks with subloops. In addition, the planar azaphenanthrenes lend themselves to π–π stacking and C—H...π interactions, leading to a diversity of supramolecular three-dimensional structural motifs being formed by these interactions. Luminescence studies show that co-crystals 1 and 2 exhibit distinctly different luminescence properties in the solid state at room temperature.

A novel bridging asymmetric benzimidazole ligand, 4-{2-[3-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl]-1H-benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl}benzoic acid, was used to construct three isomorphous two-dimensional coordination polymers, namelycatena-poly[chlorido(μ3-4-{2-[3-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl]-1H-benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl}benzoato)zinc(II)], [Zn(C26H18N3O2)Cl]n, (I), and the bromide, (II), and iodide, (III), analogues. Neighbouring two-dimensional networks are stacked into three-dimensional frameworksviainterlayer π–π interactions. The luminescent properties of (I)–(III) were investigated and they display an obvious red-shift in the solid state at room temperature.

AbstractCo-crystallization of C-propyl-pyrogallol[4]arene (PgC3) with 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) in ethanol afforded a multi-component complex (PgC3) · 3(bpy) ·(EtOH) (1) that consists of a one-dimensional brick-wall framework, which was formed by four pyrogallol[4]arene molecules and two juxtaposed bpy molecules, entrapping two other bpy molecules as guests within each cavity. Heating a mixture of PgC3 and trans-1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) in an ethanol-water mixed solvent allowed the isolation of a multi-component complex (PgC3) ·(bpe) · 2(EtOH) ·(H2O) (2), which has a two-dimensional wave-like polymer structure with the bpe molecules embedded in the wave trough between two PgC3 molecules. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography was utilized to investigate the hydrogen bonding networks of the multi-component complexes 1 and 2.

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) offer a new avenue to the structural probing of complex materials, including biomolecules. Delivery of precious sample to the XFEL beam is a key consideration, as the sample of interest must be serially replaced after each destructive pulse. The fixed-target approach to sample delivery involves depositing samples on a thin-film support and subsequent serial introductionviaa translating stage. Some classes of biological materials, including two-dimensional protein crystals, must be introduced on fixed-target supports, as they require a flat surface to prevent sample wrinkling. A series of wafer and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)-style grid supports constructed of low-Zplastic have been custom-designed and produced. Aluminium TEM grid holders were engineered, capable of delivering up to 20 different conventional or plastic TEM grids using fixed-target stages available at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). As proof-of-principle, X-ray diffraction has been demonstrated from two-dimensional crystals of bacteriorhodopsin and three-dimensional crystals of anthrax toxin protective antigen mounted on these supports at the LCLS. The benefits and limitations of these low-Zfixed-target supports are discussed; it is the authors' belief that they represent a viable and efficient alternative to previously reported fixed-target supports for conducting diffraction studies with XFELs.

Two new CdII MOFs, namely, two-dimensional (2D) poly[[[μ2-1,4-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butane](μ2-heptanedioato)cadmium(II)] tetrahydrate], {[Cd(C7H10O4)(C18H18N4)]·4H2O} n or {[Cd(Pim)(bbimb)]·4H2O} n (1), and 2D poly[diaqua[μ2-1,4-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butane](μ4-decanedioato)(μ2-decanedioato)dicadmium(II)], [Cd2(C10H16O4)2(C18H18N4)(H2O)2] n or [Cd(Seb)(bbimb)0.5(H2O)] n (2), have been synthesized hydrothermally based on the 1,4-bis(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)butane (bbimb) and pimelate (Pim2−, heptanedioate) or sebacate (Seb2−, decanedioate) ligands. Both MOFs were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 1, the CdII centres are connected by bbimb and Pim2− ligands to generate a 2D sql layer structure with an octameric (H2O)8 water cluster. The 2D layers are further connected by O—H...O hydrogen bonds, resulting in a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular structure. In 2, the CdII centres are coordinated by Seb2− ligands to form binuclear Cd2 units which are linked by bbimb and Seb2− ligands into a 2D hxl layer. The 2D layers are further connected by O—H...O hydrogen bonds, leading to an 8-connected 3D hex supramolecular network. IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and solid-state photoluminescence analysis were carried out on both MOFs. Luminescence sensing experiments reveal that both MOFs have good selective sensing towards Fe3+ in aqueous solution.

Reaction of diamide ligand, namelyN,N’-2,6-bis (4-pyridylmethyl) pyridine dicarboxamide (L) with cadmium nitrate and cadmium perchlorate has given rise to the formation of two types coordination polymers. Compound (CP1-Cd) with formula molecule {[Cd (L)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·6H2O}nis a one-dimensional coordination polymer while compound (CP2-Cd), with formula molecule {[Cd (L)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2·31⁄2H2O.CH3OH}n, is a two dimensional coordination polymer. These coordination polymers were preparedviaslow evaporation methods and completely characterized by combination of solid state techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. This study revealed that coordination polymers derived fromN,N’-2,6-bis (4-pyridylmethyl) pyridine dicarboxamide can accommodate anions with different sizes, showing good potential as anion receptor.

The title CdIIcoordination polymer, [Cd(C10H8O4)(C12H12N6)0.5(H2O)]n, has been obtained by the hydrothermal method and studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The compound forms a novel three-dimensional framework with 3,8-connected three-dimensional binodal {4.52}2{42.510.612.7.83} topology. An investigation of its photoluminescence properties shows that the compound exhibits a strong fluorescence emission in the solid state at room temperature.

1,1′-Diformylruthenocene, [Ru(C6H5O)2], crystallizes in the orthorhombic system in the P212121 space group at room temperature. There are two crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The cyclopentadienyl rings have eclipsed configuration. The molecules self-assemble in a two-dimensional structure by C—H...O and C—H...π interactions with cisoid relative orientations of the two formyl groups. The crystal studied was refined as an inversion twin.

Oximation of 20-hydroxyecdysone oxo derivatives proceeds regio- and stereoselectively and provides (E)-configured oximes in quantitative yields. The Ni–Ra-catalyzed hydrogenation of the oximes affords novel α-aminoecdysteroids with the unchanged 14α-hydroxy-7-en-6-on native chromophore of ecdysteroids. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed by the means of homo- and heteronuclear one-dimensional and two-dimensional 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
