Purpose The purpose of this paper is to adopt the multi-objective optimization technique for identifying a set of optimum abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) parameters to achieve maximum material removal rate (MRR) and minimum surface roughness. Design/methodology/approach Data of a few experiments as per the Taguchi’s orthogonal array are considered for achieving maximum MRR and minimum surface roughness (Ra) of the Inconel718. Analysis of variance is performed to understand the statistical significance of AWJM input process parameters. Findings Empirical relations are developed for MRR and Ra in terms of the AWJM process parameters and demonstrated their adequacy through comparison of test results. Research limitations/implications The signal-to-noise ratio transformation should be applied to take in to account the scatter in the repetition of tests in each test run. But, many researchers have adopted this transformation on a single output response of each test run, which has no added advantage other than additional computational task. This paper explains the impact of insignificant process parameter in selection of optimal process parameters. This paper demands drawbacks and complexity in existing theories prior to use new algorithms. Practical implications Taguchi approach is quite simple and easy to handle optimization problems, which has no practical implications (if it handles properly). There is no necessity to hunt for new algorithms for obtaining solution for multi-objective optimization AWJM process. Originality/value This paper deals with a case study, which demonstrates the simplicity of the Taguchi approach in solving multi-objective optimization problems with a few number of experiments.

Optimization has been a hot topic due to its inevitably in the development of new algorithms in almost every applied branch of Mathematics. Despite the broadness of optimization techniques in research fields, there is always an open scope of further refinement. We present here an overview of nature-inspired optimization with a subtle background of fundamentals and classification and their reliability applications. An attempt has been made to exhibit the contrast nature of multi objective optimization as compared to single objective optimization. Though there are various techniques to achieve the optimality in optimization problems but nature inspired algorithms have proved to be very efficient and gained special attention in modern research problems. The purpose of this article is to furnish the foundation of few nature inspired optimization techniques and their reliability applications to an interested researcher.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to optimize the process parameters to obtain the best dimensional accuracy, surface finish and hardness of the castings produced by using fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based patterns in investment casting (IC). Design/methodology/approach In this paper, hip implants have been prepared by using plastic patterns in IC process. Taguchi design of experiments has been used to study the effect of six different input process parameters on the dimensional deviation, surface roughness and hardness of the implants. Analysis of variance has been used to find the effect of each input factor on the output. Multi-objective optimization has been done to find the combined best values of output. Findings The results proved that the FDM patterns can be used successfully in IC. A wax coating on the FDM patterns improves the surface finish and dimensional accuracy. The improved dimensional accuracy, surface finish and hardness have been achieved simultaneously through multi-objective optimization. Research limitations/implications A thin layer of wax is used on the plastic patterns. The effect of thickness of the layer has not been considered. Further research is needed to study the effect of the thickness of the wax layer. Practical implications The results obtained by the study would be helpful in making decisions regarding machining and/or coating on the parts produced by this process. Originality/value In this paper, multi-objective optimization of dimensional accuracy, surface roughness and hardness of hybrid investment cast components has been performed.

Abstract Although abrasive water jet machining has proved its capabilities for cutting marble material in a most economic and environment friendly manner, is facing serious issues related to dimensional inaccuracy and striation marks. This has put limit on its applications. Also, due to complex nature of abrasive water jet machining process, it is very difficult to control all three quality factors i.e. kerf taper, kerf width, striation marks simultaneously to achieve desired quality. This work therefore deals with multi-objective optimization considering three objectives as: minimization of kerf width, minimization of kerf taper, and maximization of depth of striation free surface in abrasive water jet machining process. The response surface modeling is used to establish the relation between various input parameters such as stand of distance, traverse speed, water pressure, and abrasive flow rate, with objectives mentioned above. Application of well-known meta-heuristics named artificial bee colony algorithm is extended to multi-objective optimization with posteriori approach by incorporating the concept of non-dominated sorting. Set of Pareto optimal solutions obtained by this proposed approach provides a ready reference for selecting most appropriate parameter setting on the machine with respect to objectives considered in this work. Highlights Provides methodology to concurrently minimize the dimensional inaccuracy along with striation marks for cutting marble material with abrasive water jet machining process. Application of artificial bee colony algorithm is extended to multi-objective optimization. The set of Pareto-optimal solution obtained using proposed approach can be used as a ready reference by the process engineers for cutting marble material by AWJM process.

Purpose – In the present research work electrochemical grinding (ECG) process is applied to machine Al2O3/Al interpenetrating phase composite. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to optimize the ECG process parameters while machining alumina-aluminum (Al2O3 – Al) interpenetrating phase composites (IPC) used in automotive, aircraft and manufacture of space ships applying Taguchi-based experimental studies and fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making techniques. Design/methodology/approach – The present work identifies the process variables that have significant consequences during ECG of Al2O3/Al IPC. The Taguchi L9 orthogonal array is selected for design of experiments and the analysis is carried out following signal to noise ratio. The analysis of variance is carried out to establish the factors that significantly influence the responses. The present work also investigates the multi objective optimization of ECG process parameters using VIseKriterijumsa Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) and Grey relational analysis (GRA) to establish the reference ranking from a set of alternatives in the presence of conflicting criteria. Findings – Material removal rate, surface finish, overcut and cutting force are shown to depend on the type of electrolyte, supply voltage, depth of cut and electrolyte flow rate. It is found that voltage and electrolyte concentration are important. The optimal machining parameter combination for ECG process is determined using fuzzy set theory, VIKOR and GRA. Substantial improvement in machining performance takes place. Practical implications – A variety of manufacturing techniques are available for processing of Al2O3 – Al metal matrix composites. Generally manufacturers favor low cost modus operandi. Therefore ECG process is the best alternative for processing of MMCs in the present commercial sectors. The experimental investigation approach can act as useful and an efficient guideline for manufacturing. Originality/value – The characteristic features of the ECG process are reflected through Taguchi design-based experimental studies with various process parametric combinations. Application of multi-response optimization technique for evaluation of best parametric combination for machining Al2O3 – Al IPC material using ECG process is a first-of-its-kind approach in literature.
