African migration will exacerbate skill shortages
Significance The deaths of around 900 migrants attempting to cross to Europe from Libya on April 19 has heightened perceptions of a refugee surge. Although asylum applications in Europe have risen from conflict areas, such as Syria, most African migration remains within the continent. Impacts Recent regional statements on reducing the flow of migrants to South Africa are likely to be ineffective due to porous border crossings. Emigration of educated Africans will exacerbate the continent's shortage of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills. This will constrain the amount that firms spend on STEM research and development in Africa, which is far below the global average. Perceptions of immigrants heightening competition for jobs will continue -- with such scapegoating severe in poorly performing economies.
