Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a kernel convolution processor. High-speed image processing is a challenging task for real-time applications such as product quality control of manufacturing lines. Smart image sensors use an array of in-pixel processors to facilitate high-speed real-time image processing. These sensors are usually used to perform the initial low-level bulk image filtering and enhancement. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, using pulse-width modulated signals and regular nearest neighbor interconnections, a convolution image processor is presented. The presented processor is not only capable of processing arbitrary size kernels but also the kernel coefficients can be any arbitrary positive or negative floating number. Findings The performance of the proposed architecture is evaluated on a Xilinx Virtex-7 field programmable gate array platform. The peak signal-to-noise ratio metric is used to measure the computation error for different images, filters and illuminations. Finally, the power consumption of the circuit in different operating conditions is presented. Originality/value The presented processor array can be used for high-speed kernel convolution image processing tasks including arbitrary size edge detection and sharpening functions, which require negative and fractional kernel values.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to clarify the relationship between fatigue life and kinematics of angular contact ball bearing. It proposes a new modeling method of spin to roll ratio based on raceway friction, which is more accurate than the traditional raceway control theory. Design/methodology/approach The uniform model of spin to roll ratio based on raceway friction in a wide speed range is proposed using quasi-statics method, which considers centrifugal force, gyroscopic moment, friction force of raceway and other influencing factors. The accuracy is considerably improved compared with the static model without increasing too much computation. Findings A uniform model for spin to roll ratio of angular contact ball bearing based on raceway friction is established, and quite different relationships between fatigue life and speed under two operating conditions are found. Research limitations/implications The conclusion of this paper is based on the bearing basic fatigue life calculation theory provided by ISO/TS 16281; however, the accuracy of theory needs to be further verified. Practical implications This paper provides guidance for applying angular contact ball bearing, especially at a high speed. Originality/value This paper reveals the changing trend of fatigue life of angular contact ball bearing with the speed under different loads. The authors have been developing some novel methods to measure shape, deformation, stress and strain of structures using optical methods and image processing as follows: (1) Phase analysis methods using Fourier, wavelet or Gabor transforms, etc., (2) Real-time 2-D strain measurement using moiré interferometry, (3) Scanning moiré method using thinning-out of scanning lines and a DMD camera (4) Strain rate distribution measurement by a high-speed video camera, (5) Real-time integrated phase-shifting method, (6) Shape measurement methods using multi-reference planes, a linear image sensor, or a frequency modulated grating, and (7) Windowed phase-shifting digital holographic interferometry (WPSDHI). Theories of these methods and some applications are introduced. The most accurate result is 88 picometer standard deviation of errors using the WPSDHI.

For real time target detection, identification and tracking in high frame rates, large field of view images, a real-time image processing system is designed. A TMS320C6678 DSP runs as the chief arithmetic processor of this system and FPGA as the secondary controller. C6678 is compared with the same series C6414 in image compression algorithm test. Experimental results show that the new system has a more effective construct, and higher reliability, and can provide a platform for the new high-speed image processing.
