A double-slit experiment with entangled photons is theoretically analyzed. It is shown that, under suitable conditions, two entangled photons of wavelength λ can behave like a biphoton of wavelength λ/2. The interference of these biphotons, passing through a double-slit can be obtained by detecting both photons of the pair at the same position. This is in agreement with the results of an earlier experiment. More interestingly, we show that even if the two entangled photons are separated by a polarizing beam splitter, they can still behave like a biphoton of wavelength λ/2. In this modified setup, the two separated photons passing through two different double-slits, surprisingly show an interference corresponding to a wavelength λ/2, instead of λ which is the wavelength of each photon. We point out two experiments that have been carried out in different contexts, which saw the effect predicted here without realizing this connection.Quanta 2018; 7: 1–6.

Abstract To further increase the capacity of the optical transmission system, the hybrid mode- and polarisation-division multiplexing (MDM-PDM) technology has been proved to be an efficient approach by multiplexing dual polarisations for each orthogonal eigen mode. A hybrid (de)multiplexer [(De)MUX] is one of the most important fabrics for the hybrid MDM-PDM networks. A compact silicon 10-mode hybrid (De)MUX is proposed based on three cascaded asymmetric directional couplers (ADCs) based sections, three adiabatic tapers, and a polarisation beam splitter (PBS). The phase-matching conditions can be achieved by varying the widths of the bus waveguides for the TM modes and then by varying the widths of the access waveguides for the TE modes. The simulated results show that a compact total coupling length for TM1 ~ TM3 and TE1 ~ TE5 modes can be achieved to be 55.4 μm. In addition, the total loss of the proposed hybrid (De)MUX can be reduced benefitting from the fewer tapers compared with the conventional cascaded ADCs. The PBS is also optimised with a compact length of 7.0 μm and high extinction ratios of 32.9 dB and 15.4 dB for the TM0 and TE0 modes, respectively.

The optimal angle bandwidth and wavelength bandwidth of fourth-harmonic generation (FHG) and fifth-harmonic generation (FIFHG) of the 1064[Formula: see text]nm laser are analyzed based on the numerical calculation results of non-collinear type-I and type-II phase matching processes for general nonlinear uniaxial crystals with 1[Formula: see text]cm length. The non-collinear phase matching angles and effective nonlinear coefficients of FHG and FIFHG are calculated. The optimal angle bandwidth and wavelength bandwidth are obtained. The results are beneficial to broadband and efficient non-collinear phase matching FHG and FIFHG experiments and studies.
