Performance comparison of conventional STATCOM and STATCOM with energy storage in a low voltage induction motor application

Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) is an integral component of most of the receivers such as GSM, GPS etc. As name indicates, oscillation is controlled by varying the voltage at the capacitor of LC tank. By varying the voltage, VCO can generate variable frequency of oscillation. Different VCO Parameters are contrasted on the basis of phase noise, tuning range, power consumption and FOM. Out of these phase noise is dependent on quality factor, power consumption, oscillation frequency and current. So, design of LC VCO at low power, low phase noise can be obtained with low bias current at low voltage.  Nanosize transistors are also contributes towards low phase noise. This paper demonstrates the design of low phase noise LC VCO with 4.89 GHz tuning range from 7.33-11.22 GHz with center frequency at 7 GHz. The design uses 32nm technology with tuning voltage of 0-1.2 V. A very effective Phase noise of -114 dBc / Hz is obtained with FOM of -181 dBc/Hz. The proposed work has been compared with five peer LC VCO designs working at higher feature sizes and outcome of this performance comparison dictates that the proposed work working at better 32 nm technology outperformed amongst others in terms of achieving low Tuning voltage and moderate FoM, overshadowed by a little expense of power dissipation.

With the increasing penetration level of wind turbine generators (WTGs) integrated into the power system, the WTGs are enforced to aid network and fulfill the low voltage ride through (LVRT) requirements during faults. To enhance LVRT capability of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based WTG connected to the grid, this paper presents a novel coordinated control scheme named overspeed-while-storing control for PMSG-based WTG. The proposed control scheme purely regulates the rotor speed to reduce the input power of the machine-side converter (MSC) during slight voltage sags. Contrarily, when the severe voltage sag occurs, the coordinated control scheme sets the rotor speed at the upper-limit to decrease the input power of the MSC at the greatest extent, while the surplus power is absorbed by the supercapacitor energy storage (SCES) so as to reduce its maximum capacity. Moreover, the specific capacity configuration scheme of SCES is detailed in this paper. The effectiveness of the overspeed-while-storing control in enhancing the LVRT capability is validated under different levels of voltage sags and different fault types in MATLAB/Simulink.

The paper includes the analysis of the operation of low-voltage prosumer installation consisting of receivers and electricity sources and equipped with a 3-phase energy storage system. The aim of the storage application is the management of active power within the installation to decrease the total power exchanged with the supplying network and thus reduce energy costs borne by the prosumer. A solution for the effective implementation of the storage system is presented. Apart from the active power management performed according to the prosumer’s needs, the storage inverter provides the ancillary service of voltage regulation in the network according to the requirements of the network operator. A control strategy involving algorithms for voltage regulation without prejudice to the prosumer’s interest is described in the paper. Reactive power is used first as a control signal and if the required voltage effect cannot be reached, then the active power in the controlled phase is additionally changed and the Energy Storage System (ESS) loading is redistributed in phases in such a way that the total active power set by the prosumer program remains unchanged. The efficiency of the control strategy was tested by means of a simulation model in the PSCAD/EMTDC program. The results of the simulations are presented.
