Advantages and disadvantages of distance education of future dentists in Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy during quarantine were highlighted. It has been proved that quarantine is not an obstacle to learning, but a reason to study in a new way. In the era of the latest technologies such resources as Internet ones, platforms for online communication, and social networks are the main components for instructors. Different approach to present and perceive educational material is one of the main difficult components during distance education for instructors, students, interns and other audience. Both instructors and interns must master new skills in computer program for on-line communication. Adaptation and perception of distance education occurred in different ways. Majority notes that their time sheet during distance education increased, but opportunities for new methods of training also enhanced. Somebody did not take new method of training because full instructors’ control is absent, so it is necessary to motivate interns to training and self-control. Besides, patient communication should be real not theoretical for future physicians. Development of problem situations, video presentations, and video material prompts to mastering of individual practical skills. So, the experiences in distance education and mastering of dental disciplines by students, interns, physicians give an opportunity to reconstruct educational process in accordance with requirements of modernity for further integration in European (worldwide) medical spread.

It is noted that in modern conditions the issue of online education development in Ukraine has become especially acute, in particular, in the development of a long-term program to improve secondary and higher online education and ensure its new level of quality. The article is devoted to determining the need for distance and online education, the differences between them, the necessary forms of communication, the advantages and disadvantages of these forms of education, as well as prospects for distance and online education in Ukraine. It has been identified that online and distance education is viable and effective teaching strategies, but each has its own clear advantages and disadvantages for both teachers and students. The article proves that there are the following differences between these types of education: the location of the teacher and students; interaction between teacher and students; intention of teaching strategy. The authors list the advantages of distance education: distance education can continue without interruption, even in cases such as emergencies or the COVID-19 pandemic; distance education provides more flexibility for students to work at their own pace and review assignments as needed. The article summarizes the main forms of online communication between students and teachers - video conferencing, forum, chat, blog, etc. In addition, the most common web resources for distance education: Moodle, Google Classroom, Zoom and others. The problems that arise in the implementation of distance education have been identified: it is impossible to use distance education if students do not have access to devices or the Internet at home; it is difficult to keep a real contribution of the student to the work; distance education can make falsification even easier than online education; distance education can lead to even more screen time for students. It was concluded that the use of the Internet in teaching is necessary both for teachers who seek to offer their students different ways of learning, and for the students themselves. It has been proven that distance education is most useful for those students who have constant access to technology at home and work responsibly and independently, and it has a clear advantage in the event of an unexpected restriction of classes in the free economic zone.

The article features the results of a survey on the challenges and needs of the Ukrainian teachers in the implementation of distance education in the conditions of quarantine caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was carried out by the Comparative Studies Department for Information and Education Innovations of the Institute of Information Technologies and Learning Tools of the NAES of Ukraine in 2020. The study is based on the 607 responses of educators from all-over Ukraine to the online questionnaire conducted between March 27 and April 4, 2020. The content of the questionnaire covered the following topics: educational qualification of teachers, number of screen hours, problems with the access to necessary information, access to the Internet, digital tools that teachers use for distance learning, teachers’ needs in the professional development regarding the use of ICT. The obtained answers allowed providing recommendations for public education authorities, decision makers, institutions of secondary, higher and postgraduate education on the improvement of teachers’ digital competence, organization of online communication and Internet access on the workplace to digital tools for distance education. The recommendations are based on the responses of the international educational community and organizations (OECD, PISA, UNESCO, and Council of Europe) to COVID-19, in comparison with the Ukrainian realities reflected in the online survey. The novelty of the study presented in the article lies in the fact that it gives a response to the needs that Ukrainian teachers identified in the first weeks of the quarantine. It can be used to achieve long-term practical results in providing support for schools, teachers, school administrators and students in the organization of distance learning as well as in overcoming barriers to teachers' access to information on the use of digital distance learning tools.
