This paper presents a simple and fast design and implementation for a soft robot arm. The proposed continuum arm has been built by a single self-bending contraction actuator (SBCA) with two-fingers soft gripper. Because of the valuable advantages of the pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM), this continuum arm provides a high degree of safety to individuals. The proposed soft robot arm has a bending behaviour of more 180° at 3.5 kg, while, its weight is 0.7 kg. Moreover, it is designed to assist the people by reducing the number of backbends and that leads to a decrease in the possibility of lower back pain.

Abstract The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has been developing a space-rated 7 degree of freedom (DOF) robot arm with a high payload-to-mass ratio as an alternative design to motor-gear driven robotic manipulators. The robot arm employs antagonistic pairs of pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) actuators to control each degree-of-freedom (DOF) to achieve large force outputs relative to the PAM component masses. A novel feature of the NRL PAM actuator was the integration of the pneumatic control components inside the pressure-bladder, which not only reduces the volume of the robotic arm hardware but also reduces the pressurized-gas actuation volume in the PAM enabling significant reductions in gas consumption during actuation. This multifunctional design enables reductions in launch-weight costs and increases in operational endurance for space applications. The integration of these PAMs into a well-designed robotic-arm structure, in tandem with a newly developed control algorithm, has the potential to exceed the performance metrics of traditional motor-driven robot arms. This paper describes the development of the improved efficiency PAM design that is advancing this technology towards space flight readiness.

This study discusses a circular trajectory tracking function through a proposed pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM)-actuated robot manipulator. First, a dynamic model between a robot arm and a PAM cylinder is introduced. Then the parameters thereof are identified through a genetic algorithm (GA). Finally, PID is used along with a high-order sliding-mode feedback controller to perform circular trajectory tracking. As the experimental results show, the parameters of sampling time and moment of inertia are set to accomplish the trajectory tracking task in this study. In addition, the maximum error between the objective locus and the following locus was 11.3035 mm when applying theta-axis control to the circular trajectory of the robot arm with zero load or lower load. In an experiment of controller comparison, the results demonstrate that a high-order sliding-mode feedback controller is more robust in resisting external interference and the uncertainty of modeling, making the robot arm have good performance when tracking.

Background: Vehicles generally travel on different road conditions, and withstand strong shock and vibration. In order to reduce or isolate the strong shock and vibration, it is necessary to propose and develop a high-performance vehicle suspension system. Objective: This study aims to report a pneumatic artificial muscle bionic kangaroo leg suspension to improve the comfort performance of vehicle suspension system. Methods: In summarizing the existing vehicle suspension systems and analyzing their advantages and disadvantages, this paper introduces a new patent of vehicle suspension system based on the excellent damping and buffering performance of kangaroo leg, A Pneumatic Artificial Muscle Bionic Kangaroo Leg Suspension. According to the biomimetic principle, the pneumatic artificial muscles bionic kangaroo leg suspension with equal bone ratio is constructed on the basis of the kangaroo leg crural index, and two working modes (passive and active modes) are designed for the suspension. Moreover, the working principle of the suspension system is introduced, and the rod system equations for the suspension structure are built up. The characteristic simulation model of this bionic suspension is established in Adams, and the vertical performance is analysed. Results: It is found that the largest deformation happens in the bionic heel spring and the largest angle change occurs in the bionic ankle joint under impulse road excitation, which is similar to the dynamic characteristics of kangaroo leg. Furthermore, the dynamic displacement and the acceleration of the vehicle body are both sharply reduced. Conclusion: The simulation results show that the comfort performance of this bionic suspension is excellent under the impulse road excitation, which indicates the bionic suspension structure is feasible and reasonable to be applied to vehicle suspensions.
