In biological systems, a few sequence differences diversify the hybridization profile of nucleotides and enable the quantitative control of cellular metabolism in a cooperative manner. In this respect, the information required for a better understanding may not be in each nucleotide sequence, but representative information contained among them. Existing methodologies for nucleotide sequence design have been optimized to track the function of the genetic molecule and predict interaction with others. However, there has been no attempt to extract new sequence information to represent their inheritance function. Here, we tried to conceptually reveal the presence of a representative sequence from groups of nucleotides. The combined application of the K-means clustering algorithm and the social network analysis theorem enabled the effective calculation of the representative sequence. First, a “common sequence” is made that has the highest hybridization property to analog sequences. Next, the sequence complementary to the common sequence is designated as a ‘representative sequence’. Based on this, we obtained a representative sequence from multiple analog sequences that are 8–10-bases long. Their hybridization was empirically tested, which confirmed that the common sequence had the highest hybridization tendency, and the representative sequence better alignment with the analogs compared to a mere complementary.

A pure morphic sequence is a right-infinite, symbolic sequence obtained by iterating a letter-to-word substitution. For instance, the Fibonacci sequence and the Thue–Morse sequence, which play an important role in theoretical computer science, are pure morphic. Define a coding as a letter-to-letter substitution. The image of a pure morphic sequence under a coding is called a morphic sequence.A sequence x is called uniformly recurrent if for each finite subword u of x there exists an integer l such that u occurs in every l-length subword of x.The paper mainly focuses on the problem of deciding whether a given morphic sequence is uniformly recurrent. Although the status of the problem remains open, we show some evidence for its decidability: in particular, we prove that it can be solved in polynomial time on pure morphic sequences and on automatic sequences. In addition, we prove that the complexity of every uniformly recurrent, morphic sequence has at most linear growth: here, complexity is understood as the function that maps each positive integer n to the number of distinct n-length subwords occurring in the sequence.

Symbolic sequence analysis method was applied to analyze two-phase flow measurement fluctuating signals and some issues about key parameters which were effect on the symbolic statistical quantities were discussed. Based on the above study, eighty groups differential pressure fluctuating signals of gas/liquid two-phase flow were gathered in vertical upward pipes and we extracted the time irreversibility and chi-square statistics. When the gas superficial velocity is less than 0.02 m/s, the random variable motion feature and the dynamic character of bubble flow become gradually complex with the gas superficial velocity increasing. When gas superficial velocity exceeds 0.02 m/s, the dynamic character of flow pattern evolution becomes gradually simple from bubble flow to slug flow and the dynamic character becomes more and more complex from slug flow to churn flow with increasing gas superficial velocity. This study shows that time irreversibility and chi-square statistics are sensitive feature quantities of characterizing gas/liquid two-phase flow patterns and this can better help for understanding dynamic characteristics of gas/liquid two-phase flow patterns by observing the two statistical quantities changing with the two-phase flow parameters.

AbstractWe consider subsets of the (symbolic) sequence space that are invariant under the action of the semigroup of multiplicative integers. A representative example is the collection of all 0–1 sequences (xk) such thatxkx2k=0 for allk. We compute the Hausdorff and Minkowski dimensions of these sets and show that they are typically different. The proof proceeds via a variational principle for multiplicative subshifts.
