Software engineering process and practices paramount the crisis of cost, quality, and schedule constraints in developing software products. This chapter surveys the quality improvement techniques for the two fundamental artifacts of software product development, namely the architecture design and the source code. The information from top level research databases are compiled and an overall picture of quality enhancement in current software trends during the design, development, and maintenance phases are presented. This helps both the software developers and the quality analysts to gain understanding of the current state of the art for quality improvement of design and source code and the usage of various practices. The results indicate the need for more realistic, precise, automated technique for architectural quality analysis. The complex nature of the current software products requires the system developed to be beyond robust and resilient and building intelligent software that is anti-fragile and self-adaptive is favored. Innovative proposals that reduce the cost and time are invited.

Process-based numerical models developed to perform hydraulic/hydrologic/water quality analysis of watersheds and rivers have become highly sophisticated, with a corresponding increase in their computation time. However, for incidents such as water pollution, rapid analysis and decision-making are critical. This paper proposes an optimized parallelization scheme to reduce the computation time of the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code-National Institute of Environmental Research (EFDC-NIER) model, which has been continuously developed for water pollution or algal bloom prediction in rivers. An existing source code and a parallel computational code with open multi-processing (OpenMP) and a message passing interface (MPI) were optimized, and their computation times compared. Subsequently, the simulation results for the existing EFDC model and the model with the parallel computation code were compared. Furthermore, the optimal parallel combination for hybrid parallel computation was evaluated by comparing the simulation time based on the number of cores and threads. When code parallelization was applied, the performance improved by a factor of approximately five compared to the existing source code. Thus, if the parallel computational source code applied in this study is used, urgent decision-making will be easier for events such as water pollution incidents.

During software maintenance, developers usually deal with a significant number of software change requests. As a part of this, they often formulate an initial query from the request texts, and then attempt to map the concepts discussed in the request to relevant source code locations in the software system (a.k.a, concept location). Unfortunately, studies suggest that they often perform poorly in choosing the right search terms for a change task. In this paper, we propose a novel technique –ACER– that takes an initial query, identifies appropriate search terms from the source code using a novel term weight –CodeRank, and then suggests effective reformulation to the initial query by exploiting the source document structures, query quality analysis and machine learning. Experiments with 1,675 baseline queries from eight subject systems report that our technique can improve 71% of the baseline queries which is highly promising. Comparison with five closely related existing techniques in query reformulation not only validates our empirical findings but also demonstrates the superiority of our technique.

Many previous studies have shown that open-source technologies help democratize information and foster collaborations to enable addressing global physical and societal challenges. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has imposed unprecedented challenges to human society. It affects every aspect of livelihood, including health, environment, transportation, and economy. Open-source technologies provide a new ray of hope to collaboratively tackle the pandemic. The role of open source is not limited to sharing a source code. Rather open-source projects can be adopted as a software development approach to encourage collaboration among researchers. Open collaboration creates a positive impact in society and helps combat the pandemic effectively. Open-source technology integrated with geospatial information allows decision-makers to make strategic and informed decisions. It also assists them in determining the type of intervention needed based on geospatial information. The novelty of this paper is to standardize the open-source workflow for spatiotemporal research. The highlights of the open-source workflow include sharing data, analytical tools, spatiotemporal applications, and results and formalizing open-source software development. The workflow includes (i) developing open-source spatiotemporal applications, (ii) opening and sharing the spatiotemporal resources, and (iii) replicating the research in a plug and play fashion. Open data, open analytical tools and source code, and publicly accessible results form the foundation for this workflow. This paper also presents a case study with the open-source spatiotemporal application development for air quality analysis in California, USA. In addition to the application development, we shared the spatiotemporal data, source code, and research findings through the GitHub repository.
