The main contribution of this paper is a new rest-to-rest position control system for use with electric drives employing a.c. motors that is near-optimal with respect to combined electrical and frictional energy waste minimization. The friction has constant, linear, and quadratic components with respect to the rotor speed. The closeness to optimality is assessed by simulation, comparing the energy loss of the new control system with that predicted by computed optimal controls. The application of the near-optimal control system is rendered straightforward by using a symmetrical trapezoidal speed-time profile. This is provided by an energy saving reference position generator whose output is faithfully followed by means of a feedback control law based on forced dynamics control yielding prescribed closed loop dynamics, together with a matched zero dynamic lag precompensator. For load torque consisting of constant, linear, and quadratic components also maneuver time is optimized if it can be chosen arbitrary. Two case studies, one applied to position control of rotational drive and second one applied to train movement, confirm the possibilities of achieving energy savings.

We present a method to turn the results of model-based optimisations into resilient and comprehensible control strategies. Our approach is to define priority lists for all available technologies in a district energy system. Using linear discriminant analysis and the results of the optimisations, these are then assigned to discrete time steps using a set of possible steering parameters. In contrast to the model-based optimisations, the deduced control strategies do not need predictions or even perfect foresight but solely rely on data about the present. The case study using priority lists presents results in terms of emissions and prices that are only about 5% off the linear optimum. Considering that the priority lists only need information about the present, the results of the control strategies obtained using the proposed method can be considered competitive.

This paper presents results from an application of a newly developed simulation tool for pollution based real time control (PBRTC) of urban drainage systems. The Oslo interceptor tunnel is used as a case study. The paper focuses on the reduction of total phosphorus Ptot and ammonia-nitrogen NH4-N overflow loads into the receiving waters by means of optimized operation of the tunnel system. With PBRTC the total reduction of the Ptot load is 48% and of the NH4-N load 51%. Compared to the volume based RTC scenario the reductions are 11% and 15%, respectively. These further reductions could be achieved with a relatively simple extension of the operation strategy.

Energy storage systems (ESS) are becoming essential as a solution for troublesome industrial systems. This study focuses on the application of a type of ESS, a high-power technology known in the literature as supercapacitors or electric double layer capacitors (EDLC). This technology has had a huge impact during the last decade on research related to the electric traction drives, renewable sources and powergrids. Related to this aspect, this paper summarizes the most relevant scientific publications in the last five years that study the use of supercapacitor technology (SCs) in electric traction applications (drives for rail vehicles and drives for road vehicles), generation systems for renewable energy (wind, solar and wave energy), and connection systems to the electric grid (voltage and frequency regulation and microgrids). The technology based on EDLC and the practical aspects that must be taken into account in the op-eration of these systems in industrial applications are briefly described. For each of the aforementioned applications, it is described how the problems are solved by using the energy storage technology, drawing the solutions proposed by different authors. Special attention is paid to the control strategies when combining SCs with other technologies, such as batteries. As a summary, some conclusions are collected drawn from the publications analyzed, evaluating the aspects in which it is necessary to conduct further research in order to facilitate the integration of EDLC technology.

This study considers the optimal control of dry bulb temperature and moisture content in a single zone, to be accomplished in such a way as to be implementable in any zone of a multi-zone system. Optimality is determined in terms of appropriate cost and performance functions and subject to practical limits using the maximum principle. Several candidate optimal control strategies are investigated. It is shown that a bang-bang switching control which is theoretically periodic is a least cost practical control. In addition, specific attributes of this class of problem are explored.

This project aims to study the optimal control model of the ice-storage system which is theoretically close to the optimal control and also applicable to actual engineering. Using Energy Plus, the energy consumption simulation software, and the simple solution method of optimal control, researchers can analyze and compare the annual operation costs of the ice-storage air-conditioning system of a project in Beijing under different control strategies. Researchers obtained the power rates of the air-conditioning system in the office building under the conditions of chiller-priority and optimal contro1 throughout the cooling season. Through analysis and comparison, they find that after the implementation of optimal control, the annually saved power bills mainly result from non-design conditions, especially in the transitional seasons.
