SUMMARYA distributed control mechanism for ground moving nonholonomic robots is proposed. It enables a group of mobile robots to autonomously manage formation shapes while navigating through environments with obstacles. The mechanism consists of two stages, with the first being formation control that allows basic formation shapes to be maintained without the need of any inter-robot communication. It is followed by obstacle avoidance, which is designed with maintaining the formation in mind. Every robot is capable of performing basic obstacle avoidance by itself. However, to ensure that the formation shape is maintained, formation scaling is implemented. If the formation fails to hold its shape when navigating through environments with obstacles, formation morphing has been incorporated to preserve the interconnectivity of the robots, thus reducing the possibility of losing robots from the formation. The algorithm has been implemented on a nonholonomic multi-robot system for empirical analysis. Experimental results demonstrate formations completing an obstacle course within 12 s with zero collisions. Furthermore, the system is capable of withstanding up to 25% sensor noise.

This paper proposes a formation generation algorithm and formation obstacle avoidance strategy for multiple unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). The proposed formation generation algorithm implements an approach combining a virtual structure and artificial potential field (VSAPF), which provides a high accuracy of formation shape keeping and flexibility of formation shape change. To solve the obstacle avoidance problem of the multi-USV system, an improved dynamic window approach is applied to the formation reference point, which considers the movement ability of the USV. By applying this method, the USV formation can avoid obstacles while maintaining its shape. The combination of the virtual structure and artificial potential field has the advantage of less calculations, so that it can ensure the real-time performance of the algorithm and convenience for deployment on an actual USV. Various simulation results for a group of USVs are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

AbstractThis work describes design and implementation of a navigation and obstacle avoidance controller using fuzzy logic for four-wheel mobile robot. The main contribution of this paper can be summarized in the fact that single fuzzy logic controller can be used for navigation as well as obstacle avoidance (static, dynamic and both) for dynamic model of four-wheel mobile robot. The bond graph is used to develop the dynamic model of mobile robot and then it is converted into SIMULINK block by using ‘S-function’ directly from SYMBOLS Shakti bond graph software library. The four-wheel mobile robot used in this work is equipped with DC motors, three ultrasonic sensors to measure the distance from the obstacles and optical encoders to provide the current position and speed. The three input membership functions (distance from target, angle and distance from obstacles) and two output membership functions (left wheel voltage and right wheel voltage) are considered in fuzzy logic controller. One hundred and sixty-two sets of rules are considered for motion control of the mobile robot. The different case studies are considered and are simulated using MATLAB-SIMULINK software platform to evaluate the performance of the controller. Simulation results show the performances of the navigation and obstacle avoidance fuzzy controller in terms of minimum travelled path for various cases.
