Injury claims associated with minimal damage rear impact traffic crashes are often defended using a “biomechanical approach,” in which the occupant forces of the crash are compared to the forces of activities of daily living (ADLs), resulting in the conclusion that the risk of injury from the crash is the same as for ADLs. The purpose of the present investigation is to evaluate the scientific validity of the central operating premise of the biomechanical approach to injury causation; that occupant acceleration is a scientifically valid proxy for injury risk. Data were abstracted, pooled, and compared from three categories of published literature: (1) volunteer rear impact crash testing studies, (2) ADL studies, and (3) observational studies of real-world rear impacts. We compared the occupant accelerations of minimal or no damage (i.e., 3 to 11 kph speed change or “delta V”) rear impact crash tests to the accelerations described in 6 of the most commonly reported ADLs in the reviewed studies. As a final step, the injury risk observed in real world crashes was compared to the results of the pooled crash test and ADL analyses, controlling for delta V. The results of the analyses indicated that average peak linear and angular acceleration forces observed at the head during rear impact crash tests were typically at least several times greater than average forces observed during ADLs. In contrast, the injury risk of real-world minimal damage rear impact crashes was estimated to be at least 2000 times greater than for any ADL. The results of our analysis indicate that the principle underlying the biomechanical injury causation approach, that occupant acceleration is a proxy for injury risk, is scientifically invalid. The biomechanical approach to injury causation in minimal damage crashes invariably results in the vast underestimation of the actual risk of such crashes, and should be discontinued as it is a scientifically invalid practice.

Abstract A multi-component aerodynamic test for an airframe-engine integrated scramjet vehicle model was conducted in the free-piston shock tunnel HIEST. A free-flight force measurement technique was applied to the scramjet vehicle model named MoDKI. A new method using multiple piezoelectric accelerometers was developed based on overdetermined system analysis. Its unique features are the following: (1) The accelerometer’s mounting location can be more flexible. (2) The measurement precision is predicted to be improved by increasing the number of accelerometers. (3) The angular acceleration can be obtained with single-axis translational accelerometers instead of gyroscopes. (4) Through the averaging process of the multiple accelerometers, model natural vibration is expected to be mitigated. With eight model-onboard single-axis accelerometers, the three-component aerodynamic coefficients (Drag, Lift, and Pitching moment) of MoDKI were successfully measured at the angle of attack from 0.7 to 3.4 degrees under a Mach 8 free-stream test flow condition. A linear regression fitting revealed a 95% prediction interval as the measurement precision of each aerodynamic coefficient. Graphical abstract

Anuran jumping is one of the most powerful accelerations in vertebrate locomotion. Several species are hypothesized to use a catapult-like mechanism to store and rapidly release elastic energy, producing power outputs far beyond the capability of muscle. Most evidence for this mechanism comes from measurements of whole-body power output; the decoupling of joint motion and muscle shortening expected in a catapult-like mechanism has not been demonstrated. We used high-speed marker-based biplanar X-ray cinefluoroscopy to quantify plantaris muscle fascicle strain and ankle joint motion in frogs in order to test for two hallmarks of a catapult mechanism: (i) shortening of fascicles prior to joint movement (during tendon stretch), and (ii) rapid joint movement during the jump without rapid muscle-shortening (during tendon recoil). During all jumps, muscle fascicles shortened by an average of 7.8 per cent (54% of total strain) prior to joint movement, stretching the tendon. The subsequent period of initial joint movement and high joint angular acceleration occurred with minimal muscle fascicle length change, consistent with the recoil of the elastic tendon. These data support the plantaris longus tendon as a site of elastic energy storage during frog jumping, and demonstrate that catapult mechanisms may be employed even in sub-maximal jumps.

The effect of track-seeking on off-track residual vibrations of the head-gimbal assembly (HGA) is investigated for air and helium environments using the so-called “fluid dynamic mesh” method and the “fluid-structure interaction” method. Three different angular acceleration profiles (square wave, triangular wave and sinusoidal wave) are investigated as a function of seek time (10 ms and 5 ms). Results show that smoothening of sharp transitions of the seek profile improves the performance of off-track residual vibrations during track-following and shortens the track-following time of the head positioning servo system. In addition, the effect of lateral flow (windage) on off-track residual vibrations during track-following must be considered for a square wave angular acceleration profile. Simulation results show that helium improves the track-following accuracy compared to air due to the lower windage forces acting on the HGA. We observe that the sinusoidal wave angular acceleration performs best among the three angular acceleration profiles investigated. Furthermore, seek time is found to have only a small effect on off-track residual vibrations during track-following.

To protect flat-bottom cylindrical tanks against severe damage from uplift motion, accurate evaluation of accompanying fluid pressures is indispensable. This paper presents a mathematical solution for evaluating the fluid pressure on a rigid flat-bottom cylindrical tank in the same manner as the procedure outlined and discussed previously by the authors (Taniguchi, T., and Ando, Y., 2010, “Fluid Pressures on Unanchored Rigid Rectangular Tanks Under Action of Uplifting Acceleration,” ASME J. Pressure Vessel Technol., 132(1), p. 011801). With perfect fluid and velocity potential assumed, the Laplace equation in cylindrical coordinates gives a continuity equation, while fluid velocity imparted by the displacement (and its time derivatives) of the shell and bottom plate of the tank defines boundary conditions. The velocity potential is solved with the Fourier–Bessel expansion, and its derivative, with respect to time, gives the fluid pressure at an arbitrary point inside the tank. In practice, designers have to calculate the fluid pressure on the tank whose perimeter of the bottom plate lifts off the ground like a crescent in plan view. However, the asymmetric boundary condition given by the fluid velocity imparted by the deformation of the crescent-like uplift region at the bottom cannot be expressed properly in cylindrical coordinates. This paper examines applicability of a slice model, which is a rigid rectangular tank with a unit depth vertically sliced out of a rigid flat-bottom cylindrical tank with a certain deviation from (in parallel to) the center line of the tank. A mathematical solution for evaluating the fluid pressure on a rigid flat-bottom cylindrical tank accompanying the angular acceleration acting on the pivoting bottom edge of the tank is given by an explicit function of a dimensional variable of the tank, but with Fourier series. It well converges with a few first terms of the Fourier series and accurately calculates the values of the fluid pressure on the tank. In addition, the slice model approximates well the values of the fluid pressure on the shell of a rigid flat-bottom cylindrical tank for any points deviated from the center line. For the designers’ convenience, diagrams that depict the fluid pressures normalized by the maximum tangential acceleration given by the product of the angular acceleration and diagonals of the tank are also presented. The proposed mathematical and graphical methods are cost effective and aid in the design of the flat-bottom cylindrical tanks that allow the uplifting of the bottom plate.
