Abstract The traceability application by the industry to ensure products along the supply chain include quality, safe and halal. Traceability is an essential part of the cold chain system for meat and meat products. The cold chain of beef, including a slaughterhouse, distribution, and retail, needs to be monitored. The decline in the beef quality is marked by sensory changes such as color, unpleasant odor, and mucus formation triggered by bacterial growth. Beef quality is easily damaged during distribution due to the complexity and length of the cold chain. Consumers also pay attention to the halalness of beef in the supply chain. The implementation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) can monitor changes in quality and halalness of beef when distribution utilizes various sensor and product information tags. RFID requires a transponder to store and retrieve data remotely, an antenna for transponders, and a reader. This article reviews the RFID traceability system, the cold supply chain for beef, and RFID development to maintain beef quality, safety, and halalness. RFID technology helps producers and consumers to get quality, safe, and halal beef information in real-time.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an innovative and well-recognized technology that supports all kinds of traceability systems in many areas. It becomes very important in the food industry where the electronic systems are used to capture the data in the supply chain. Additionally, RFID data loggers with sensors are available to perform a cold chain optimization for perishable foods. This paper presents the temperature monitoring solution at the box level in the fish supply chain as part of the traceability system implemented with RFID technology. RFID data loggers are placed inside the box to measure the temperature of the product and on the box for measuring ambient temperature. The results show that the system is very helpful during the phases of storage and transportation of fish to provide the quality control. The sensor data is available immediately at the delivery to be checked on the mobile RFID reader and afterwards stored in the traceability systems database to be presented on a web to stakeholders and private consumers.

The aim of this paper is to present an economic evaluation framework of an RFID system implementation through a pilot project with the aim of streamlining logistic processes and compliance with higher level requirements. The company involved in the project belongs to the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) food industry, and in particular to the alimentary industry, whose principal scope was to comply the new norms of the sector by implementation of a better traceability system. This system, besides being very effective for the scope of the project, also had a huge impact in economic terms on logistics resources and cost reduction. For this reason, the discover of the RFID technology for the company has been greatly appreciated at management level, and today other fields of application are under evaluation. The added value of this article is contained not only in the results obtained in the economic evaluations, but also in the applied methodology, evidencing the advantages obtainable in the processes by cutting no added value operations. The economic analysis has thus been conducted on the basis of this TO-BE process streamlining.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a rapidly evolving technology for automatic identification and data capture of products. One of the barriers to the adoption of RFID by organizations is difficulty in assessing the potential return on investment (ROI). Much of the research and analyses to date of ROI in implementing RFID technology have focused on the benefits to the retailer. There is a lack of a good understanding of the impact of RFID at upper echelons of the supply chain. In this paper, we present a framework and models for assessing the value of RFID implementation by tier-one suppliers to major retailers. We also discuss our real-life application of this framework to one of Wal-Mart’s top 100 suppliers
