Abstract Non-degraded and degraded AlGaN/GaN HEMT devices have been characterized electrically and investigated in various operating modes using integral and spectrally resolved photon emission (PE). In degraded devices the PE dependence on the gate voltage differs from the non-degraded devices. Various types of dependencies on the gate voltage have been identified when investigating local degradation sites. PE spectroscopy was performed at various bias conditions. For both devices broad spectra have been obtained in a wavelength regime from visible to near-infrared, including local performance variations. Signatures of the degradation have been determined in the electrical characterization, in integral PE distribution and in the PE spectrum.

Limited charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) is one of the main barriers to adoption of these vehicles. In conjunction with limited battery range, the lack of charging infrastructure leads to range-anxiety, which may discourage many potential users. This problem is especially important for long-distance or intercity trips. Monthly traffic patterns and battery performance variations are two main contributing factors in defining the infrastructure needs of EV users, particularly in states with adverse weather conditions. Knowing this, the current study focuses on Michigan and its future needs to support the intercity trips of EVs across the state in two target years of 2020 and 2030, considering monthly traffic demand and battery performance variations. This study incorporates a recently developed modeling framework to suggest the optimal locations of fast EV chargers to be implemented in Michigan. Considering demand and battery performance variations is the major contribution of the current study to the proposed modeling framework by the same authors in the literature. Furthermore, many stakeholders in Michigan are engaged to estimate the input parameters. Therefore, the research study can be used by authorities as an applied model for optimal allocation of resources to place EV fast chargers. The results show that for charger placement, the reduced battery performance in cold weather is a more critical factor than the increased demand in warm seasons. To support foreseeable annual EV trips in Michigan in 2030, this study suggests 36 charging stations with 490 chargers and an investment cost of $23 million.

Different wetland and stabilisation ponds, comprising of duckweed, reed and algal systems, were compared for the treatment of domestic sewage. Within the large performance variations observed within systems, the differences observed between systems can be considered to be insignificant.

Performance indexes usually provide global evaluations of robot performances mixing their translational and/or rotational capabilities. This paper proposes a definition of performance index, called direction-selective index (DSI), which has been specifically developed for parallel manipulators and can provide uncoupled evaluations of robot translational capabilities along relevant directions. The DSI formulation is first presented within a general framework, highlighting its relationship with traditional manipulability definitions, and then applied to a family of parallel manipulators (4-RUU) of industrial interest. The investigation is both numerical and experimental and allows highlighting the two chief advantages of the proposed DSIs over more conventional manipulability indexes: not only are DSIs more accurate in predicting the workspace regions where manipulators can best perform translational movements along specific directions, but also they allow foreseeing satisfactorily the dynamic performance variations within the workspace, though being purely kinematic indexes. The experiments have been carried out on an instrumented 4-RUU commercial robot.

Availability of quality power has become an important issue for industrial utilities due to frequent performance variations in process industries. Increase in the generating capacity has not kept up pace of power demand, which results into shortage of power supply and power system network is normally subjected to varying and unequal loads across the three phases. Continuous variation of single-phase loads on the power system network leads to voltage variation and unbalance, most importantly; the three-phase voltages tend to become asymmetrical in nature. Application of asymmetrical voltages to induction motor driven systems severely affects its working performance. This paper presents the effects of voltage variation and unbalance on the performance of an induction motor driven centrifugal pump with a case study.

Because of inconsistent empirical evidence, the membership-performance model pervasive in strategic group analysis is re-examined. We propose that individualfirm capabilities, which reflect capacity to implement or change strategy, moderate the effect of members' shared strategy characteristics on performance. Controlling for market structure, we defined two strategic groups based on common strategy characteristics among 55 manufacturing firms. We found significant differences in performance and capabilities within each group. There was also evidence of a significant correlation between capabilities and performance within each group. We conclude that effects offirms' capabilities should be accountedfor to increase the explanatory power of strategic groups in competitive performance.

In virtualized servers, with live migration technique pages are copied from one physical machine to another while the virtual machine (VM) is running. The dynamic migration of virtual machines encumbers the data center which in turn reduces the performance of applications running on that particular physical machine. A considerable number of studies have been carried out in the area of performance evaluation during live VM migration.  However, all the aspects related to the migration process have not been examined for the performance assessment. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to evaluate the performance during migration process in different types of coupled machine environment. It is presented here that the state of art VM migration technology requires further improvement in realizing effective migration by monitoring comprehensive performance value. We introduced the parameter, θ, to compare performance value which can be used for controlling and halting unsuccessful migration and save significant amount of time in migration operation.  Our model is capable of analyzing real time scenario of cloud performance assessment targeting VM migration strategies. It also offers the possibility of further expanding to universal models for analyzing the performance variations that occurs as a result of VM migration.
