There is limited research on teaching and learning of programming in primary school and even less about aspects concerning teaching programming from teachers’ viewpoint. In this study, we explore how Finnish 1-6 primary school teachers (N=91), teaching at schools with Swedish as the language of instruction, relate to programming and teaching of programming, one year after the introduction of the new national curriculum that included programming. The teachers’ relation to programming is studied by analyzing their view on programming, perceived preparedness to teach programming and their attitudes towards teaching programming. The main results of the present study are that the responding teachers approach programming in school with mixed emotions, but the majority claim to have sufficient preparedness to teach programming, and many of them have a positive attitude towards the subject. The findings indicate that the most important factor for high perceived preparedness and positive attitude is sufficient domain knowledge. The teachers’ views on programming are very diverse, ranging from focusing only on the connection to elementary step-by-step thinking to more sophisticated reasoning connecting to central aspects of computational thinking and other educational outcomes. The findings suggest that there is a need for educational efforts to make the connection between mathematical content and programming more visible for primary school teachers.

Learning about the conceptions used by primary school teachers towards the use of robotics in class is essential as the first step towards its application in the classroom. Therefore, with the purpose of describing the understanding applied when teaching and learning mathematics use educational robots, research was conducted by means of mixed methods using a descriptive design by survey. Such research consisted of closed questions (Likert-type scale from 1 to 5) and open questions, given to 83 primary school teachers who currently teach students in the first years of school (First to Fourth grade) in two Chilean districts. The results showed that in general, there is a positive predisposition towards the addition of robots in the learning and teaching of mathematic processes during the first years of school, even though teachers claim there is a struggle to incorporate robots in their lessons due to the high number of students and the reduced space in their classrooms.

This paper is a conceptual approach that stimulate able scholars that failed to ponder carefully on dual-role conflict among female primary school teachers. Of course, female primary school teachers are experiencing dual-role conflict. Also, presently female primary school teachers has dominated our primary schools teaching our children, on the same vain experiencing dual-role conflict which needed urgent attention from all stakeholders. The essence of this paper was due to the relevance of work and family matters. Scholars are really trying their best for enlightening all stakeholders on the issue of work-family role conflict in many discipline. In Education, related researches are always carrying on but the background level of education primary school is somehow been put aside with little concern. Considering this will help in making the work-life balance of female primary school teachers more sustainable. With this teaching and learning of our younger children would be efficient and effective. The researcher has proposed a conceptual framework in studying dual-role conflict among female primary school teachers. However, the qualitative interpretivist approach using case study or grounded theory would be applicable in conducting such type of research respectively.

Abstract The aspiration of Malaysian education system as mentioned in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 is to produce students who are highly critical and creative.  Since teaching for higher order thinking was made explicit since 1989, a systematic evaluation of the adequacy and pitfalls of teaching for thinking programs was not done extensively.  If examination result is the yard stick to measure the impact of teaching for thinking, then it can be concluded that 2016 UPSR result painted a dismal picture of failure in teaching for thinking.  Studies showed that there is a positive correlation between language teacher used to communicate in the classroom and the development of thinking dispositions among students.  Using the framework of language of thinking put forward by Costa and Marzano (2001), this study was conducted to explore language of thinking used by teachers during teaching and learning sessions in several primary school classrooms.  This preliminary study attempted to gain in-depth understanding of the phenomenon in the actual setting so that the insight can illustrate a wider picture of the issue.  This exploratory case study employed structured observations to collect data in the classroom of nine primary school teachers.  The data was analysed based on theoretical proposition by Costa and Marzano.  Findings revealed that teachers needed to improve their language of thinking.    Keywords: Thinking skills, language of thinking, teaching for thinking, higher order thinking.   Abstrak Aspirasi pendidikan Malaysia sebagaimana yang disebut dalam Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia 2013-2025 adalah untuk melahirkan pelajar yang berupaya berfikir secara kritis dan kreatif.  Semenjak kemahiran berfikir pada aras tinggi disebut secara eksplisit dalam kurikulum sekolah menengah dan rendah dari tahun 1989 lagi, satu penilaian yang sistematik terhadap kejayaan dan kelemahan pengajaran untuk kemahiran berfikir tidak dibuat secara meluas dan menyeluruh.  Jika keputusan peperiksaan dijadikan kayu ukur untuk mengukur keberkesanan pengajaran untuk berfikir, keputusan peperiksaan UPSR 2016 melukis gambaran kegagalan projek mengajar untuk kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi yang menyedihkan.  Kajian menunjukkan ada perkaitan positif antara Bahasa yang digunakan oleh guru ketika berkomunikasi dalam bilik darjah dengan perkembangan disposisi berfikir dikalangan pelajar.   Disposisi berfikir pula berkait langsung dengan tabiat berfikir dan kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi.  Kajian ini bertujuan untuk meneroka Bahasa berfikir yang digunakan oleh guru dalam proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran di sekolah rendah.  Bahasa berfikir yang diterangkan oleh Costa dan Marzano (2001) digunakan sebagai kerangka teori kajian ini.  Kajian ini cuba untuk meneroka amalan berbahasa guru untuk memahami fenomena ini dalam situasi sebenar supaya hasilnya dapat memberi gambaran luas terhadap isu ini.  Kajian kes eksplorasi ini menggunakan pemerhatian secara berstruktur untuk mengumpul data.  Sembilan orang guru sekolah rendah terlibat dalam kajian ini.  Data telah dianalisis menggunakan toeri Bahasa berfikir Costa dan Marzano.  Dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan guru perlu menambahbaik Bahasa berfikir yang mereka gunakan semasa berkomunikasi dalam bilik darjah supaya aspirasi melahirkan pelajar berkemahiran berfikir aras tinggi dapat dicapai.    Kata Kunci: Kemahiran berfikir, bahasa berfikir, mengajar untuk berfikir, berfikir aras tinggi.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires the empowerment of learners through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), already at primary level. Teacher education for the SDGs is a focus of ESD. However, many teachers in Madagascar are underqualified and show knowledge gaps regarding ESD. This paper aims at identifying starting points for an ESD-oriented further development of teacher training, considering regionally relevant issues. Teaching Sustainable Development issues requires procedural knowledge. This paper reports on (i) Malagasy primary school teachers’ (n = 286) teaching and learning prerequisites regarding land-use and health issues compared to expert knowledge, (ii) modeling teachers’ respective procedural knowledge with the Rasch Partial Credit Model and validation studies, and on (iii) comparison of groups of teachers differentiated by diversity dimensions, e.g., teaching at rural or urban schools. The teachers underestimated land-use and health courses of action regarding effectiveness and possibility of implementation, compared to experts. IRT modeling resulted in two distinct knowledge dimensions, i.e., land use and health (latent correlation: 0.31). Rural teachers showed higher procedural land-use knowledge than urban teachers. No differences occurred regarding health knowledge. The paper argues for ESD-focused reorientation of teacher training, considering regional specificities of land-use topics, e.g., regarding vanilla and rice cultivation in North-East Madagascar, and health topics.

Remote Teaching and Learning Activities (RTLA) have emerged in the aftermath of the sudden closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic around the world. Multimode RTLA is slightly suited to the students of secondary and tertiary education. Nevertheless, it is questionable to use with primary school children whose learning is designed mostly child-centred. In addition, it is vital to investigate teachers' readiness and training and access to facilities for conducting remote learning activities. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate Primary school teachers' perception towards RTLA during the lockdown period in Sri Lanka. This study was employed a survey research design, and data were collected using a google form-based questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 40 items to collect teachers' demographic information, facilities and training available to them, attitudes towards RTLA, teaching methods and techniques they used, and participation of parents and students in RTLA. Sixty-two primary teachers were selected using the snowball sampling technique from two districts, namely Gampaha and Kandy. Collected data were analyzed using mean and standard deviations and percentages. The analysis of results shows that most of the respondents (92.9%) used mobile broadband services to access the internet and 69.5% of the respondents used pre-paid services to access the internet. Furthermore, most respondents (69.4%) claimed they could afford it. Data analysis in terms of devices and apps for RTLA showed that most respondents (72.6%) relied on their smartphones for conducting RTLA. Likewise, many of them (64.5%) had been used WhatsApp and Zoom (64.5%) to reach their students who were at home. However, it is revealed that 98% of the respondents mentioned that they did not receive any facilities and training from authorities to conduct RTLA. Teachers' attitudes toward RTLA (M=3.52, SD=1.21), parental participation (M=3.2, SD=1.14), and student participation (M=3.89, SD=1.13) had lower mean values. Moreover, most of the respondents claimed that the RTLA is not suited to the students in Primary education. Many primary teachers stated that they faced challenges regarding access to the internet and devices, getting parental support for the RTLA. Therefore, researchers recommended that the National and Local authorities provide clear guidelines, training, and necessary facilities and resources to conduct a meaningful RTLA to the primary education teachers.
