Aim: This study compared smear-layer and debris removal using with three different application times of 17% EDTA and 7% maleic acid irrigation agents. Methodology: Fifty-two maxillary and mandibular single-rooted teeth were divided randomly into seven groups (n = 8 each, control group n = 4). Three groups received 17% EDTA and three received maleic acid (1, 5, 10 min). Canals were prepared using nickel-titanium rotary files. Smear-layer and debris removal were evaluated in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the teeth using scanning electron microscopy, and results were analyzed compared using Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: Maleic acid removed the smear layer (coronal and middle: p<0.01; apical: p<0.05) and debris (all p< 0.05) more effectively than EDTA in terms of 1 min application period. Effectiveness did not differ significantly with 10-min applications. Conclusions: Final irrigation with 7% maleic acid is more efficient than 17%EDTA in the removal of smear layer and debris from the coronal, middle and apical third of the root canal system in application within 1 min.  How to cite this article: Kaya S, Adıgüzel Ö, Ganidağlı Ayaz S. <p class="western" lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US"><strong>Objective: </strong></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US">The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 0.5% peracetic acid solution and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution on smear layer removal of root canal walls after rotary instrumentation. </span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US"><strong>Material and methods:</strong></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US"> Sixty single-rooted human teeth with standardized length had their canals instrumented by three rotary systems (Biorace, MTwo and Endowave), varying the irrigation solution, as follows (n=10): G1- Biorace System + 0.5% peracetic acid solution; G2- Biorace System + 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution; G3- MTwo System + 0.5% peracetic acid solution; G4- MTwo System + 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution; G5- Endowave System + 0.5% peracetic acid solution; G6- Endowave System + 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution. After instrumentation, the roots were cleaved and the dentin walls were evaluated by SEM at x500 and x2000 magnification for assessing the cleaning of the root canals at the cervical, middle and apical thirds. The analyzed area was quantified according to the total number of tubules present and the percentage of open tubules at each region. Data were submitted to statistical analysis by ANOVA and Tukey tests, at the significance level of 5%. </span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US"><strong>Results:</strong></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US"> There were no statistical significant differences among the experimental groups. Приведены данные двухлетнего исследования по поиску эффективных препаратов для обеззараживания семян капусты от сосудистого бактериоза. Наилучший результат был получен при предпосевной обработке 0,15%-ной надуксусной кислотой. При этом биологическая эффективность составляла 94,1–97,6%, что значительно превышало соответствующий показатель в эталонном варианте – Фитолавин, ВРК, 0,2% (69,0–72,0%). Показано, что заблаговременная обработка семян НУК (за 550 суток до посева) не оказывала достоверного влияния на их лабораторную всхожесть.Presented data are the result of a two-year study aimed at identifying effective preparations for the disinfection of cabbage seeds from black rot. The best result was obtained by presowing treatment with 0.15% peracetic acid. In this case, the biological efficiency was 94.1–97.6%, which significantly exceeded the corresponding indicator in the reference variant – Phytolavin, VRK, 0.2% (69.0–72.0%). The study has not revealed any significant effect of advance treatment of seeds with peracetic acid (550 days before sowing) on their laboratory germination.
