Although recently reported models for determining egg shape are highly accurate, certain complicated measurements or computations are to be performed. Thus relatively simple and attainable analysis methods of chicken egg shape variability were chosen and used for the purpose of presented research. Sample of 250 eggs of ISA BROWN strain was examined. Geometrical parameters were measured and calculated with following expression of their coefficient of variation – namely egg length 3.56 %, egg maximum width 2.84 %, shape index 3.80 %, surface area 5.08 %, and egg volume 7.23 %. The second method consisted in shape quantitative measuring by the score of the principal components of elliptic Fourier descriptors (EFDs). The first four principles components which could explain over 99 % of the egg shape variations were found to be very good measures of the monitored phenomenon. It was found that 87.41 % of the total shape variation can be accounted to length to width ratio. Usefulness and relevance of the shape index usage was confirmed.

The egg production of local chiken can be increased by crossing of arab and merawang chicken. This study aimed to observed egg production performances of crossing between merawang x merawangarab (M-MA), merawangarab x merawang (MA-M), merawangarab x merawangarab (MA-MA), arabmerawang x arabmerawang (AM-AM), merawangarab x arab (MA-A), and arab x merawangarab (A-MA). Parameters in this study were egg weight, egg shape index, hen day production and feed conversion. The result showed that the egg weight of MA-M chicken was significantly greater (P<0.05). than M-MA, MA-MA, AM-AM, MA-A, and A-MA chicken. The MA-A egg index was significantly larger (P<0.05) than other crossing. Hen day production of M-MA chicken was significantly greater (P<0.05) and feed convertion was significantly efficient (P<0.05) than other crossing. MA hens had better production than other hens.

It is well documented that the juvenile hormone (JH) can function as a gonadotropic hormone that stimulates vitellogenesis by activating the production and uptake of vitellogenin in insects. Here, we describe a phenotype associated with mutations in the Drosophila JH receptor genes, Met and Gce: the accumulation of mature eggs with reduced egg length in the ovary. JH signaling is mainly activated in ovarian muscle cells and induces laminin gene expression in these cells. Meanwhile, JH signaling induces collagen IV gene expression in the adult fat body, from which collagen IV is secreted and deposited onto the ovarian muscles. Laminin locally and collagen IV remotely contribute to the assembly of ovarian muscle extracellular matrix (ECM); moreover, the ECM components are indispensable for ovarian muscle contraction. Furthermore, ovarian muscle contraction externally generates a mechanical force to promote ovulation and maintain egg shape. This work reveals an important mechanism for JH-regulated insect reproduction.

What is the connection between a representation, such as a painting, statue or engraving, and its subject? For example, what makes a painting a painting of McX? The problem is not how to paint McX, which belongs to art experts. So the answer is not, for example, ‘The painter starts at the top with an egg-shape for the head …” The question is rather: what makes the results of such efforts a painting of McX? What conditions must a painting satisfy to warrant such a description? What is the force or meaning of the word ‘of’ in phrases like ‘painting of McX’?

In the course of a study of fecundity in Drosophila funebris (Donald and Lamy, 1937), it was noted that a particular female was laying very few eggs, and that the shape of these was peculiar. Among her descendants other females of similarly low fecundity and laying eggs of the same abnormal shape were encountered, and it was assumed therefore that a mutation affecting fecundity and egg shape had been recognised. In this paper evidence concerning the type of heredity of these characteristics is presented, and a statistical description of the morphological aspect of the new mutation, the size and shape of the egg, as compared with those of the normal D. funebris egg, is given.

We evaluated the variation in absolute size and shape of birds’ eggs and the effects of developmental mode and phylogenetic relatedness on these traits. Eggs were characterized by length, diameter, and three indices of egg shape. Indices of egg shape were calculated as the ratio of radii that described the curvature of pointed end (cloacal zone), blunt end (infundibular zone), and lateral zone to egg diameter. We found that eggs shape was less variable than the absolute size of eggs. Index of the cloacal zone was the most changeable and index of the infundibular zone was very conservative. Size and shape of eggs could be better explained with phylogenetic relatedness than developmental mode.
