THE eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) is one of Australia?s widest-ranging large macropodids, occurring in open forests, woodlands, subalpine woodland, farmland, and semi-arid regions throughout most of eastern Australia (Menkhorst and Knight 2001). However current general accounts (e.g., Poole 1995, Menkhorst and Knight 2001) regard M. giganteus as being absent from the northern Cape York Peninsula.

Eleven complete profiles and an additional 112 surface soils of deep sandy yellow and red earths in the far northern part of Cape York Peninsula have been sampled for laboratory studies. Chemical analyses showed that these acid soils are very low in organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, exchangeable basic cations, and base saturation. They have relatively high contents of exchangeable aluminium. The variability of surface soil chemical properties is relatively low. Glasshouse experiments with Stylosanthes humilis cv. Gordon conducted on soils from the 11 profile sites showed responses to sulphur, potassium, zinc and lime on all soils and to copper on about half the sites. Considering the results of both the laboratory and glasshouse studies, it is suggested that responses to nitrogen, phosphorus, zinc and probably calcium and copper are likely in the field. Responses to sulphur may be transitory because of the presence of appreciable levels of phosphate-extractable sulphur at depth.

The response of a Stylosanthes guyanensislBrachiaria decumbens pasture to phosphorus on a yellow earth soil in northern Cape York Peninsula was studied over three years. Establishment rates of 0 to 130 kg ha-1 P were used followed by various combinations of 0 or 20 kg ha-1 P in the next two years. With comparisons made at the same cumulative P rate the dry matter and nitrogen yields were not affected by timing of application but P yield was increased in the third year when P was freshly applied. The dry matter yield response was modified by the botanical composition of the pasture. In the first year the pasture was 90-95 per cent legume and 110 kg ha-1 P was required to give 90 per cent of the presumed maximum yield whereas in the third year when the legume content was lower, (increasing from 10 to 40 per cent with P rate) this requirement had been reduced to about 90 kg ha-1 P. The third year P yield data were used to show that the value of applied P declined by about 70 per cent each year. After three years all the applied P was recovered in the 0-60 cm zone and the distribution was not affected by timing of application. In the 0-10 cm zone the acid extractable P increased from 0 with no P applied to 40 p.p.m. with 150 kg ha-1 P applied.

Paleoecology has demonstrated potential to inform current and future land management by providing long-term baselines for fire regimes, over thousands of years covering past periods of lower/higher rainfall and temperatures. To extend this potential, more work is required for methodological innovation able to generate nuanced, relevant and clearly interpretable results. This paper presents records from Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia, as a case study where fire management is an important but socially complex modern management issue, and where palaeofire records are limited. Two new multiproxy palaeofire records are presented from Sanamere Lagoon (8,150–6,600 cal BP) and Big Willum Swamp (3,900 cal BP to present). These records combine existing methods to investigate fire occurrence, vegetation types, and relative fire intensity. Results presented here demonstrate a diversity of fire histories at different sites across Cape York Peninsula, highlighting the need for finer scale palaeofire research. Future fire management planning on Cape York Peninsula must take into account the thousands of years of active Indigenous management and this understanding can be further informed by paleoecological research.

Over 400 specimens from 26 locations, mainly in the Lesser Sunda Islands and some from New Guinea and northern Cape York, were examined. These were representative of an array of forms ordinarily assigned to Eucalyptus urophylla, E. pellita and an undescribed species as well as those considered by some to be hybrid between E. alba and E. urophylla. The latter has long been considered to show considerable polymorphism. Re-examination of the available material and records suggest that interspecific hybridisation is not significantly involved in this variability. Although this examination pointed to the existence of some differentiation at the level of species in this array, there was still a core of material which could not be separated readily into subgroups. Measurements were taken of selected floral and foliar morphological features which were then subject to statistical analysis to ascertain if subgroups were discernible on this basis. As a result, the separation of two species, Eucalyptus orophila sp. nov. and Eucalyptus wetarensis sp. nov. from Eucalyptus urophylla sensu lato in the Lesser Sunda Islands, is supported. The related populations called species A by Pinyopusarerk et al. (1993), from New Guinea and northern Cape York, were to a somewhat lesser extent separated on these criteria. These results were paralleled by evidence from seedling morphology and oil characteristics. Isozyme analysis gave a similar grouping for the material from Wetar, but did not indicate other separations from the core E. urophylla.

This paper presents preliminary results of archaeological investigation of the northern Cape York Peninsula highlands, the homelands of the Kuuku I’yu (northern Kaanju) people. Despite intensive and long-term research programs elsewhere in Cape York Peninsula, no previous archaeological work has been undertaken in this particular region. The aim of this research was to identify the location of archaeological places and artefacts throughout the Kaanju Ngaachi Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) and the broader Wenlock region. The preliminary research results outlined here include the recording of rock art, culturally modified trees, lithic material, pastoral sites and the remains of a Native Mounted Police camp. This study clearly indicates that the highlands of Cape York Peninsula have substantial research potential; however, further work is required to achieve a greater understanding of both physical and cultural landscapes.

The green-eyed treefrogs (Litoria eucnemis species-group) are found throughout New Guinea and some of its offshore islands, and in two geographically separated regions in north-eastern Queensland, Australia. We examine the genetic relationships among populations of the complex from across its range and find that populations fall into two major lineages: 1) specimens referable to L. genimaculata from New Guinea and its offshore islands, and L. exophthalmia, and 2) samples referable to L. eucnemis from New Guinea and northern Cape York, Australia, and two lineages from the Wet Tropics of north-eastern Australia that are currently assigned to L. genimaculata. Based on our molecular genetic analyses, morphological assessment of new collections and re-examination of type material, we retain L. eucnemis as currently recognised for northern Cape York populations but resurrect the name L. serrata for the Wet Tropics populations. The degree of reproductive isolation between the two Wet Tropics lineages is being studied currently and so at this point we refer both to L. serrata. The degree of genetic variation observed in L. genimaculata across New Guinea locations and possible paraphyly with L. exophthalmia suggest the presence of additional undescribed species. Reexamination of type material and collection of new specimens, allow us to reassess the status of several other names currently synonymised with L. eucnemis and L. genimaculata. Our observations support the present synonymy of Hyla rhacophorus with L. eucnemis and we remove Nyctimystes loveridgei from the synonymy of L. genimaculata and place it in the synonymy of L. eucnemis.

Trace element deficiencies were suspected in cattle in an area of Cape York Peninsula that receives a predominantly summer rainfall of more than 1500 mm and has soils low in nutrient concentration. Consequently cattle were treated with cobalt and copper while grazing Panicum maximum-Stylosanthes guyanensis pastures. After 11 months the fiveweight gains for the four treatment groups were : nil -21 kg ; +Cu -2 kg; +Co +142 kg and +Cu + Co + 121 kg. Many of the animals not given cobalt were emaciated and near death at that time. A group of these animals gained 79 kg in 50 days after receiving supplementary cobalt. Blood copper levels were not affected by treatment but treatment with cobalt decreased blood urea-nitrogen values in the dry season. Cobalt treatment also increased serum vitamin BIZ levels 3-4 fold, increased the liver vitamin B12 levels 10-20 fold and enhanced the storage of copper in the liver. Apart from a short period early in the wet season, the pastures contained less than 0.025 �g Co g-1 dry matter. These levels are discussed in relation to the dietary requirements of grazing cattle.
