Objective: Children with ADHD display higher rates of sleep problems, and both sleep disorders and ADHD have been shown to affect functioning in childhood. The current study examines the frequency and relationship between sleep problems and ADHD, and their impact on quality of life (QoL) and functional impairment. Method: Parents of 192 children with ADHD ( M = 10.23 years) completed measures regarding their child’s ADHD symptoms (Swanson, Nolan and Pelham [SNAP]), sleep disorders (Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire [PSQ]), QoL (Child Health Illness Profile [CHIP-PE]), and functioning (Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale–Parent Report [WFIRS-P]). Results: Common sleep complaints in participants were insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and variability in sleep schedule. Regression analysis indicated that sleep problems and ADHD symptoms independently predicted lower levels of QoL (Δ R2 = .12, p < .001) and social functioning (Δ R2 = .12, p < .001). Conclusion: The results suggest that ADHD may coexist with somnolence and that both conditions have a significant impact on a child’s functioning and QoL.

Objective: ADHD affects 11% of children in the United States and is associated with significant levels of anxiety. Although the literature supports mindfulness-based interventions as a promising strategy for managing anxiety, it falls short in the feasibility of digital mindfulness interventions. Method: This study investigated the usefulness of the pediatric version of Headspace, a digital mindfulness program, for reducing stress in 18 children with ADHD. We conducted a 4-week pilot study to evaluate the Headspace digital mindfulness application for children ages 6 to 12 with ADHD. Parents completed the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire at baseline and endpoint. Results: Participants had an average age of 9.2 years and were 78% male. The Headspace intervention significantly reduced anxiety and sleep problems in children with ADHD. Conclusion: Children with ADHD and comorbid anxiety and/or sleep problems could benefit from a digitally based meditation application. (J. of Att. Dis. XXXX; XX(X) XX-XX)

Objective: This article aims to assess whether individual differences in reward sensitivity can be used to predict which children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will benefit most from behavioral interventions that include reinforcement. Methods: A 12-week behavioral intervention was offered to 21 children with ADHD and their parents. Reward sensitivity was assessed prior to the intervention using a combination of psychological and physiological measures. ADHD symptoms were assessed pre- and posttreatment using the Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD and Normal behavior (SWAN) rating scale. Results: Lower scores on one of the questionnaire scales were associated with greater pre/posttreatment differences in ADHD symptoms. Conclusion: We found that pre/posttreatment change was associated with one measure of parent-rated reward sensitivity. Children with low impulsive negative behavior toward gaining reward improved most during treatment. This result suggests that aspects of reward-related behaviors in ADHD may be useful to predict the effectiveness of treatment.

Abstract Introduction Anxiety and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) are common psychiatric comorbidities in children with sleep disorders. It is known that comorbid psychiatric disorders increase the risk of sleep problems. However, no study has compared the clinical characteristics of children presenting with sleep problems and various common psychiatric disorders. Methods Retrospective chart review of all children presenting to the sleep clinic for sleep problems between March 2016 to June 2017 was performed. Demographics, sleep intake patient questionnaires, polysomnograms and ICD-9/10 codes for comorbidities and sleep diagnoses were collected. In children with diagnoses of anxiety (ICD-9 300/ICD-10 F41) and ADHD (ICD-9 314/ICD-10 F90), demographics, presenting symptoms, Epworth sleepiness scores and prevalence of sleep comorbidities were compared. T-test (continuous) and Chi Square (categorical) were used. Unadjusted odds ratio was calculated for presenting symptoms and sleep comorbidities. P value of &lt;0.05 was considered significant. Results 250 (F=145, 58%) children were evaluated. 71.2% children were diagnosed with anxiety and 28.8% diagnosed with ADHD. Mean age at presentation was 8.53 ± 4.2 years. Age, gender and race of children presenting with sleep problems and comorbid anxiety/ADHD were statistically similar. Children with anxiety spent less time in stage N3 sleep (25.2% ± 9.1 versus 28.6% ± 9.2) and had lower arousal indices (7.19 ± 3.8 versus 8.86 ± 5.5) compared to children with ADHD. Children with anxiety were more likely to present with chief complaint of “feeling tired or sleepy during the day” (OR:2.38, 1.32-4.37) and were more likely to have a diagnosis of hypersomnia (OR: 11.67, 3.19-42.75) versus children with ADHD. Conclusion Children with psychiatric comorbidities have distinct polysomnographic characteristics. Children with anxiety are more likely to present with daytime sleepiness and have a significantly higher prevalence of hypersomnia compared to children with ADHD. Support None
