Abstract Introduction Sigmoid volvulus in pregnancy is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality if not diagnosed and managed early. Case presentation A 29-year-old female (Chagga by tribe) presented with clinical features of intestinal obstruction 24 weeks into her second pregnancy. She had symptoms for one week. An emergency laparotomy was performed whereby gangrenous sigmoid volvulus was found; thus, it was resected and Hartmann’s colostomy was raised. Unfortunately, she experienced intrauterine fetal death post-operatively. She was discharged clinically stable. Conclusion Early diagnosis and management can prevent adverse effects such as bowel ischemia and preterm labor. Because classic clinical and radiological features may not be evident, high degree of suspicion is warranted.

An 87-year-old man complaining of abdominal distention was referred to our hospital. Plain radiograph and enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a dilated sigmoid colon with a coffee bean sign, leading to the diagnosis of sigmoid volvulus. Based on symptoms and the CT and laboratory test findings, we initially treated the patient with endoscopic reduction, resulting in successful reduction of the sigmoid volvulus with widespread presumed mucosal ischemia. Due both to the lack of emerging symptoms suggesting colon perforation and to the laboratory test findings after endoscopic reduction, we treated the patient without further urgent surgical intervention. Two months later, the patient underwent successful elective laparoscopic surgery with a redundant sigmoid colon resection and a functional end-to-end anastomosis. He has been well without any events for 20 months. Conservative treatment with careful observation should be taken into consideration in the treatment of sigmoid volvulus with mild to moderate ischemia after endoscopic reduction.

Genital herpes affects all population groups. 98% of the adult population worldwide have antibodies to the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 or 2). This viral infection is a significant medical and social problem. HSV can lead to a complicated course of pregnancy, causing miscarriages, premature birth, intrauterine fetal death, systemic viral disease in newborns. There is evidence that HSV has a connection with malignant tumors of the prostate and cervix, contributing to their development. This literature review contains modern aspects of epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinic, diagnosis, treatment of genital herpes, including its recurring forms with valacyclovir (Valvir). Indications for hospitalization of patients with genital herpes were noted and the prognosis of this pathology was determined. The tactics of managing pregnant women with this pathology is presented.
