Green Supply Chain Management in Malaysian Aero Composite Industry

Green supply chain management (GSCM) is a concept that gaining popularity in the most region in the world. For many organisations, it is a way to demonstrate their sincere commitment to environment sustainability. This paper is then, to investigate GSCM practices in aero composite manufacturing companies, as an initiative for environmental enhancement of green management programme in Malaysia which has the potential to offer greater economic value especially in manufacture of composites material components and sub-assemblies for aircraft application. Two major companies in the sector were chosen as the location of the study. The findings show that GSCM practices in the two companies are currently moderate; and, most of the practices have significant relationship to each other. Lean manufacturing system was became most preferable approach to support the development of green supply chain practices.

Manufacturing companies in today's industrial world are seeking to use the new manufacturing process methods. The primary goal of corporations is to achieve optimum production while deploying minimal capital. The fundamental purpose of this study is to examine the influence of various lean manufacturing practices on the sustainability performance of companies and the mediating role of green supply chain management (GSCM). The data was gathered using questionnaires from 250 Pakistani manufacturing firms and analyzed using AMOS 25. Results demonstrate that process and equipment, product design, supplier relationships, and customer relationships significantly affect sustainable performance. It is also recognized that Green Supply Chain Management mediates the interaction between HR processes, product design, supplier relationship, customer relationship, and environmental performance. The findings of this study will enable managers and decision-makers of manufacturing companies to increase sustainable efficiency and reduce waste through the use of lean manufacturing and GSCM implementation.

The global shift in ecological movement has significant impacts on business operation of manufacturing firms that are located in developing countries. The intense pressure of being environmentally sustainable has caused Green Supply Chain Management (Green SCM) concept to emerge as an important corporate environmental strategy for manufacturing companies. Information technologies and systems have permeated in most business activities, in which, they extend important opportunities to resolve environmental issues. However, many researchers, including manufacturers and government bodies often disregard the green concept of information technologies and systems in minimizing environmental issues. A comprehensive review on Green SCM, Green IT and Green IS for sustainable environmental performance in manufacturing companies is presented using Input-Process-Output (IPO) Theory and Technological-Organizational-Environmental (TOE) theory. In bridging the research gap, a model is constructed to link the aforementioned constructs. Next, the paper reports on the development of survey questionnaire using cognitive interviewing strategies, followed up with semi-structured interview to investigate and obtain preliminary findings on the influential factors, green activities and performance outcomes from implementing Green SCM. Lastly, the finalized survey questionnaire was distributed to 60 ISO14001 certified manufacturing companies located in the region of Perak and Kulim. Out of 60 manufacturing companies, only 32 responses received as the dataset in analyzing for improvements in reliability, measurement error, and validity of measured items. The findings from this pilot study explain that internal and external factors have stronger influence over the implementation of green initiatives in supply chain with substantial outcome on environmental performance. The information technologies and systems being the physical resource, capability and backbone to run a business seamlessly are significantly recognized. But, the green component of IT and IS were poorly attended and disregarded to an extent in the process of greening the processes, operations or entire business. Therefore, further investigations are required in the main study to validate the findings obtained here and other possible association between the factors, practices and outcomes in realizing ecological improvements in the supply chain and firm itself.

This paper investigates the effects of green supply chain management practices on sustainable performance. This study sent a survey to 616 Malaysian ISO 14001 certified manufacturing companies. With a total of 152 usable questionnaires, the response rate was 24.68%. The findings showed that green purchasing and eco-design were found to improve all the components of sustainable performance. While reverse logistics was found to have a positive impact on social performance only. These relationships indicate that Green Supply Chain Management Practices can be of value to organizations specifically, as well to the external environment at large.

Green Supply Chain Management merupakan model yang mempertimbangkan faktor lingkungan dalam konteks manajemen rantai pasok pasok mulai dari pemasok, perusahaan manufaktur, konsumen. Dalam makalah ini, literatur berkaitan tentang penerapan manajemen rantai pasok hijau ditinjau secara kritis untuk mengidentifikasi faktor penghambat dan pendorong dalam penerapannya.   In the past few years environmental factors have been important to note in order to create a sustainable industry. Green Supply Chain Management is a model that considers environmental factors in the context of supply chain management starting from suppliers, manufacturing companies, consumers. In this paper, the related literature on implementing green supply chain management is critically reviewed to identify the inhibiting factors and drivers in its application.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how supply chain ambidexterity facilitates assistance for green supply chain management and to build on previous work by evaluating how networking capability helps to explain the impact of supply chain ambidexterity on GSCM. This study focuses on the top-level management of different manufacturing companies located in Pakistan. A total of 34 manufacturing industries were selected using a cluster sampling technique. The data collected from 125 top-level managers were analyzed using a partial least square method, while the moderation analysis was conducted by using variance analysis. First, supply chain ambidexterity positively influences green supply chain management. However, networking capabilities do not moderate the relationship between supply chain ambidexterity and green supply chain management. This research was restricted to manufacturing industries in Pakistan because the research intended to gain an understanding of the several supply chain ambidexterity practices in Pakistani businesses and wanted to determine how these practices are associated with various parts of GSCM. Further studies can be extended to examine the impact in other industrial settings and countries. The findings of this research study will allow the managers to identify the right mix of exploitation and exploration techniques required to manage the supply chain in a green and sustainable manner.
