A new approach to die shape optimal design in bimetal extrusion of rods is presented. In this approach, the design problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem incorporated with the finite element model, and optimization of the die shape is conducted on the basis of the design sensitivities. The approach is applied to the determination of the optimal die shapes for several combinations of the core and sleeve materials.

To research the load upper bracket of Francis hydroelectric unit, then established the finite-element model, and analyzed the structure stress of 7 operating condition points with the ANSYS software. By the strain rosette test, acquired the data of stress-strain in the area of stress concentration of the upper bracket. The inaccuracy was considered below 5% by analyzing the contradistinction between the finite-element analysis and the test, and match the engineering precision and the test was reliable. The finite-element method could be used to judge the stress of the upper bracket, and it could provide reference for the Structural optimization and improvement too.

Abstract Guidance for determining a S-N based fatigue capacity (safe life design) for preloaded connectors is included in Section 5.4 of the 2019 edition of DNVGL-RP-C203 (C203-2019). This section includes guidance on the finite element model representation, finite element based fatigue analysis and determination of the connector design fatigue capacity by use of one of the following methods: Method 1 by FEA based fatigue analysis, Method 2 by FEA based fatigue analysis and experimental testing and Method 3 by full-scale connector fatigue testing. The FEA based fatigue analysis makes use of Appendix D.2 in C203-2019 (“S-N curves for high strength steel applications for subsea”). Practical use of Section 5.4 is illustrated with a case study of a fatigue tested wellhead profile connector segment test. Further developments of Section 5.4 of C203-2019 are proposed. This included acceptance criteria for use of a segment test to validate the FEA based fatigue analysis of a full-scale preloaded connector.

Abstract Stress analysis and determination of eigen pairs of a typical turbocharger compressor impeller have been carried out using the concept of cyclic symmetry. A simplified model treating the blade and the hub as isolated elements has also been attempted. The limitations of the simplified model have been brought out. The results of the finite element model using the cyclic symmetric approach have been discussed.

The natural frequencies of circular saws limit the operating speeds of the saws. Current industry methods of increasing natural frequency include pretensioning, where plastic deformation is induced into the saw. To better model the saw, the finite element model is compared to current software for steel saws; C-SAW, a software program that calculates frequencies for stiffened circular saws. Using C-SAW and the finite element method the results are compared and the finite element method is validated for steel saws.

Based on the impact of some horizontal filtering tank’s instability in operation process on production, the present paper discusses the optimal design scheme for horizontal filtering tank structure with the help of finite element. Theoretical guidance will be given to enterprise from the perspective of finite element for the purpose of improving the horizontal filtering tank through constructing the finite element model for horizontal filtering tank with Creo parametric software, conducting simulation with workbench software[1] and finally arriving at the reasonable design scheme after analysis, thus avoiding the structural instability caused by the over-constraint of structural leg support beam and filter plate under-constraint.

The equations that describe the development of corrugations on block braked wheel treads caused by thermoelastic instability are discretized using the finite element method. The perturbations of temperatures and distortions are described by an amplitude function, which is spatially fixed multiplied by a sinusoidal running wave term of fixed wavelength. The governing equations are such that the wave term cancels out. Only the amplitude functions are discretized in the finite element model. The intermittent nature of the contact is directly specified through the boundary conditions. Results are obtained for a simplified two-dimensional model of a train wheel. These results agree with analytical results. [S0742-4787(00)00701-3]

Based on modal strain energy method, the paper discusses viscoelastic free layer damping sheet, establishes the finite element model of it and obtains the natural frequencies and loss factor. Then the paper calculates the loss factor of viscoelastic free layer damping structure with engineering empirical formula, and compares the result with that obtained by finite element method. By comparing the two results, it indicates that the finite element method is effective in analyzing this kind of problems.

We propose two algorithms for elliptic boundary value problems in shape optimization. With the finite element method, the optimization problem is replaced by a discrete variational problem. We give rules and use them to decide which elements are to be reserved. Those rules are determined by the optimization; as a result, we get the optimal design in shape. Numerical examples are provided to show the effectiveness of our algorithms.

With the port crane getting bigger and heavier, and also moving much faster than before, the thermal effect in wheel and rail during the brake process can be a reason of the failure of port crane. In this paper, the thermal effect during the brake process of port crane is studied using the finite element method. Based on the finite element model, the ANSYS10.0 finite element software is used. The thermal effects under different coefficients are discussed. Three different slide speed of wheel, two different loads of crane, and three different frictional coefficients are applied. The importance of the different coefficients is obtained from the numerical results.

The process of multi-wedge cross wedge rolling is an advanced precision technology for forming long shaft parts such as automobile semi-axes. Three-dimensional solid model and the finite element model of semi-axes on automobile and dies of its cross wedge rolling were established. The process of cross wedge rolling was simulated according to the actual dimension of semi-axes on automobile utilizing the finite element method (FEM)software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The required force parameters for designing semi-axes mill are determined. The appropriate roller width was determined according to the length and diameter of semi-axes on automobile. The results have provided the basis for the design of specific structure of automobile semi-axes cross wedge rolling mill.
