A model of the non-leaking equilibrium behavior of the lip seal has been developed. It consists of an elastohydrodynamic model of the lubricating film and a simplified model of the meniscus on the air-side of the seal. The model predicts the location of the meniscus, the film thickness and pressure distributions, and the locations of cavitation regions. It also predicts the maximum pressure that can be sealed with zero leakage, and the maximum speed, above which the meniscus is ingested into the sealing zone.

Experimental and theoretical studies of elastohydrodynamically lubricated contacts normally assume static or quasi-static conditions. Nonsteady conditions are, however, very common, e.g., in machine elements such as ball bearings, gears, and cam-follower mechanisms. In this paper, the case of a ball impacting a flat lubricated surface is investigated theoretically. This case implies transient conditions and the lubricating effect is due to pure squeeze action in the contact. Pressure and film thickness distributions are computed during impact and rebound. The results of the analysis show the effects of ball mass, initial impact velocity, lubricant properties, and the thickness of the applied lubricant layer on, for example, minimum film thickness, maximum impact force, and maximum pressure. Increasing impact velocity increases the minimum value of film thickness achieved during the total impact time. The damping capacity of the lubricating film is very high at low impact velocity and small ball mass. In fact, the damping is so high that no rebound occurs if the velocity or the ball mass are smaller than certain critical values. The thickness of the lubricant layer has very little influence on the results if it is thicker than a certain value. If the pressure-viscosity coefficient is increased, the film becomes thicker.

A theoretical nonlinear analysis of tilting-pad journal bearings is presented for small and large unbalance loads under isothermal conditions. The radial displacements of internal pad surface due to pressure field are determined by a two-dimensional finite element method in order to define the actual film thickness. The influence of pad deformations on the journal orbit, on the minimum film thickness and on the maximum pressure is studied. The effects of pad displacements are to decrease the minimum film thickness and to increase the maximum pressure. The orbit amplitude is also increased by 20 percent for the large unbalance load compared to the one obtained for rigid pad.

The Reynolds equation plays an important role for predicting pressure distributions for fluid film bearing analysis, One of the assumptions on the Reynolds equation is that the viscosity is independent of pressure. This assumption is still valid for most fluid film bearing applications, in which the maximum pressure is less than 1 GPa. However, in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) where the lubricant is subjected to extremely high pressure, this assumption should be reconsidered. The 2D modified Reynolds equation is derived in this study including pressure-dependent viscosity, The solutions of 2D modified Reynolds equation is compared with that of the classical Reynolds equation for the ball bearing case (elastic solids). The pressure distribution obtained from modified equation is slightly higher pressures than the classical Reynolds equations.

The trend towards high power output, high speed and low power loss in engines requires a better understanding of bearing behaviour. Research in this area is directed more towards different aspects involved in bearing analyses, rather than providing a comprehensive guideline on design of bearing. This effort compiles the design methodology for selection of diametral clearance and bearing length by limiting the minimum film thickness, maximum pressure and temperature. The design procedure is summarized on the basis of the existing rapid bearing analyses for evaluation of the journal trajectory, minimum film thickness and maximum pressure and simplified thermal analysis. A flow chart is provided for step-by-step bearing design. Finally, two case studies of engine bearings are described: one investigates the VEB bigend connecting-rod bearing for a large industrial reciprocating engine and the other a main crankshaft bearing for an automotive engine. The methodology translates into easy-to-use expressions and the overall procedure is outlined, using practical data to demonstrate how this can be employed effectively by users.

A modified Reynolds equation for bump type gas foil thrust bearing was established with consideration of the gas rarefaction coefficient. Under rarefied gas lubrication, the Knudsen number which was affected by the film thickness and pressure was introduced to the Reynolds equation. The coupled modified Reynolds and lubricating film thickness equations were solved using Newton-Raphson Iterative Method and Finite Difference Method. By calculating the load capacity for increasing rotor speeds, the lift-off speed under certain static load was obtained. Parametric studies for a series of structural parameters and assembled clearances were carried out for bearing optimization design. The results indicate that with gas rarefaction effect, the axial load capacity would be decreased, and the lift-off speed would be improved. The rarefied gas has a more remarkable impact under a lower rotating speed and a smaller foil compliance coefficient. When the assembled clearance of the thrust bearing rotor system lies in a small value, the lift-off speed increases dramatically as the assembled clearance decreases further. Therefore, the axial clearance should be controlled carefully in assembling the foil thrust bearing. It’s worth noting that the linear uniform bump foil stiffness model is not exact for large foil compliance ∼0.5, especially for lift-off speed analysis, due to ignoring the interaction between bumps and bending stiffness of the foil.

The development of models for the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of rotary lip seals requires the measurement of the film thickness under a real seal. A new method has been developed for this purpose which is based on the use of lubricant oils in which magnetite particles are suspended (so-called magnetic fluids). A change in the fluid film thickness will create a change in the impedance of the coil of the measuring circuit, the magnetic flux of which is directed through the oil film of the contact area. The advantage of this technique is that minimal modifications have to be applied to the tribological system under examination. Initial measurements carried out with a model rubber lip seal provided new insight into the build-up of a lubricant film as a function of the rotary speed and allowed comparison with the results of a theoretical model for the analysis of lip seal lubrication developed in parallel.

The flow field in the lubricating film of a rotary lip seal is analyzed numerically by solving the Reynolds equation with flow factors. The behavior of such a flow field is dominated by the asperities on the lip surface. Since previous analyses treated those asperities deterministically, they required very large computation times. The present approach is much less computationally intensive because the asperities are treated statistically. Since cavitation and asperity orientation play important roles, these are taken into account in the computation of the flow factors. Results of the analysis show how the operating parameters of the seal and the characteristics of the asperities affect such seal characteristics as the pressure distribution in the film, the pumping rate and the load support.

In this paper, the influence of circumferential scratches on the thermohydrodynamic performance of a partial (lobe) journal bearing is studied. The bearing damage is characterized by four factors: the area of the scratched region, the density of the scratches within the affected area, the relative position of the scratched region and the relative depth of the wear defects. The bearing performance is characterized by minimum film thickness, average oil temperature, maximum pressure, friction torque etc., at imposed magnitude and direction of the load. A numerical hydrodynamic model with global thermal effects is used for studying the influence of the different wear related parameters on the bearing performance. The results permit to predict the overall performance loss due to the circumferential wear marks, for different wear profiles. The types of wear profiles that can lead to the bearing destruction (characterized by a critical minimum film thickness) are also investigated.

The present study deals with the experimental determination of the performance of a 100 mm diameter plain journal bearing submitted to a misalignment torque. Hydrodynamic pressure and temperature fields in the mid-plane of the bearing, temperatures in two axial directions, oil flow rate, and minimum film thickness, were all measured for various operating conditions and misalignment torques. Tests were carried out for rotational speeds ranging from 1500 to 4000 rpm with a maximum static load of 9000 N and a misalignment torque varying from 0 to 70 N.m. The bearing performances were greatly affected by the misalignment. The maximum pressure in the mid-plane decreased by 20 percent for the largest misalignment torque while the minimum film thickness was reduced by 80 percent. The misalignment caused more significant changes in bearing performance when the rotational speed or load was low. The hydrodynamic effects were then relatively small and the bearing offered less resistance to the misalignment.
