Review—Basic Research Needs in Fluid Mechanics

A small segment of the engineering community was surveyed to obtain their judgment regarding the long-range needs for basic research in fluid mechanics. This segment consisted of approximately 600 persons active in heat transfer and fluid mechanics committees within The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Close to 200 persons responded giving useful information relating to needed research. Of the many topics identified, six generic areas stood out: turbulence; multiphase flows; fluid structure interactions; boundary layer effects; biological, geological, and environmental fluid flow; and the need for new facilities and improved instrumentation. These six areas were summarized and an initial estimate of the research priorities presented to the DOE-ESCOE workshop on Fluid Dynamics and Thermal Processes held at the University of Kentucky on February 1–2, 1979. The priorities were modified and the final results of the workshop included herein.

The epilogue turns its attention to Host’s perception of current events and issues about which he is passionate. He addresses problems that are keeping Kentucky from making greater progress, as well as his role in Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR), Kentucky Wired, and the Lexington Urban League. Host expresses his desire for the commonwealth to provide greater support to the University of Kentucky, with a view to making it an elite research university. He also shares his opinions on the current state of NCAA athletics and its governance structure and voices his support for student athletes’ right to control their own likenesses and promote commercial products. Host argues that this would encourage student athletes to stay in school rather than leaving college to become professional athletes. Host concludes the epilogue by thanking the many individuals who have played an important role in his life and professional career.

The articles in this issue are drawn from the papers delivered at the conference “Ab Initio: Law in Early America,” held in Philadelphia on June 16–17, 2010—the first conference in nearly fifteen years to focus on law in early America. It was sponsored by the Penn Legal History Consortium, the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, the American Society for Legal History, the University of Michigan Law School, and the University of Minnesota Law School, under the direction of Sarah Barringer Gordon, Martha S. Jones, William J. Novak, Daniel K. Richter, Richard J. Ross, and Barbara Y. Welke. For two days, fifteen mostly younger scholars presented their research to a packed house, with formal comments by senior scholars and vigorous discussion with the audience. That earlier conference, “The Many Legalities of Early America,” which convened in Williamsburg in 1996, had illustrated the shift from what was once trumpeted as the “new” legal history to something that never acquired a name, perhaps because it was less self-conscious in its methodology. “Ab Initio” offered the opportunity to ask how the field has changed in the years since.

The School of Nursing at the State University of New York at Albany has offered, as a service to the university community, a course, not just a series of lectures, but a semester course in which students could explore the many factors associated with the use and abuse of drugs in America today. The course was designed to cover in depth the vast problems of drug abuse from the “street drugs” to the medicine cabinet. The student was expected to read and discuss current concepts of pharmacology, psychology, and sociology as they apply to drug abuse.

The figure of the superhero has always been regarded as an iconic representative of American society. Since the birth of the first superhero, it has been shaped by the most important historical, political, and social events, which were echoed in different comic issues. In principle, in the superhero genre, there has never been a place for aging superheroes, for they stand as a symbol of power and protection for the nation. Indeed, their mythical portrayal of young and strong broad-chested men with superpowers cannot be shattered showing them fragile or disabled. The aim of this article is to delve into the complex paradigm of the passage of time in comics and to analyze one of the most famous superheroes of all times, Superman, in terms of his archetypical representation across time. From the perspective of cultural and literary gerontology, the different issues of Action Comics will be examined, as well as an alternative graphic novel Kingdom Come (2008) by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, where Superman appears as an aged man. Although it breaks the standards of the genre, in the end it does not succeed to challenge the many stereotypes embedded in society in regard to aging, associated with physical, cognitive, and emotional decline. Furthermore, this article will show how a symbolic use of the monomythical representation of a superhero may penetrate into other cultural expressions to instill a more positive and realistic portrayal of aging.

Abstract Diversity and inclusion are essential perspectives on university campuses. In recent years, there has been a nationwide decline in admissions resulting in changes to traditionally FTIAC driven college campuses. An environmental scan was completed at a mid-sized midwestern university to explore age-inclusive barriers and opportunities for change. In-depth interviews were held with 28 EMU stakeholders representing a wide variety of ages in leadership positions across campus. Students aged 40 and above (N=248) were also surveyed about their experiences on campus. Qualitative analysis revealed ageist attitudes about older adults and older students from at all levels of the university. Results demonstrate that initial responses to ‘age-friendly’ focused on stereotypes of older adults, but attitudes adjusted when reframed as older learners and further refined when older learners were defined as 40 and above. Additionally, there was a distinct disconnect between ageist perceptions towards older adults and older students which highlights the importance of intergenerational opportunities as an approach to combat ageist attitudes on campus. While these barriers require long-term and complicated solutions, participants described the many benefits that older learners bring to enrich the campus. Results of this research revealed opportunities to reframe aging in the context of diversity and inclusion efforts on campus. Adopting diversity efforts to include age can benefit universities in not only admissions, classroom experiences, and connections to surrounding communities.
