A Film-Cooling Correlation for Shaped Holes on a Flat-Plate Surface

A common method of optimizing coolant performance in gas turbine engines is through the use of shaped film-cooling holes. Despite widespread use of shaped holes, existing correlations for predicting performance are limited to narrow ranges of parameters. This study extends the prediction capability for shaped holes through the development of a physics-based empirical correlation for predicting laterally averaged film-cooling effectiveness on a flat-plate downstream of a row of shaped film-cooling holes. Existing data were used to determine the physical relationship between film-cooling effectiveness and several parameters, including blowing ratio, hole coverage ratio, area ratio, and hole spacing. Those relationships were then incorporated into the skeleton form of an empirical correlation, using results from the literature to determine coefficients for the correlation. Predictions from the current correlation, as well as existing shaped-hole correlations and a cylindrical hole correlation, were compared with the existing experimental data. Results show that the current physics-based correlation yields a significant improvement in predictive capability, by expanding the valid parameter range and improving agreement with experimental data. Particularly significant is the inclusion of higher blowing ratio conditions (up to M=2.5) into the current correlation, whereas the existing correlations worked adequately only at lower blowing ratios (M≈0.5).

The interaction of flow and film-cooling effectiveness between jets of double-jet film-cooling (DJFC) holes on a flat plate is studied experimentally. The time-averaged flow field in several axial positions (X/d = −2.0, 1.0, and 5.0) is obtained through a seven-hole probe. The downstream film-cooling effectiveness on the flat plate is measured by pressure sensitive paint (PSP). The inclination angle (θ) of all the holes is 35 deg, and the compound angle (β) is ±45 deg. Effects of the spanwise distance (p = 0, 0.5d, 1.0d, 1.5d, and 2.0d) between the two interacting jets of DJFC holes are studied, while the streamwise distance (s) is kept as 3d. The blowing ratio (M) varies as 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. The density ratio (DR) is maintained at 1.0. Results show that the interaction between the two jets of DJFC holes has different effects at different spanwise distances. For a small spanwise distance (p/d = 0), the interaction between the jets presents a pressing effect. The downstream jet is pressed down and kept attached to the surface by the upstream one. The effectiveness is not sensitive to blowing ratios. For mid-spanwise distances (p/d = 0.5 and 1.0), the antikidney vortex pair dominates the interaction and pushes both of the jets down, thus leading to better coolant coverage and higher effectiveness. As the spanwise distance becomes larger (p/d ≥ 1.5), the pressing effect almost disappears, and the antikidney vortex pair effect is weaker. The jets separate from each other and the coolant coverage decreases. At a higher blowing ratio, the interaction between the jets of DJFC holes happens later.

Detailed film cooling effectiveness distributions are obtained on a flat plate using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique. The applicability of the PSP technique is expanded to include a coolant-to-mainstream density ratio of 1.4. The effect of density ratio on the film cooling effectiveness is coupled with varying blowing ratio (M = 0.25–2.0), freestream turbulence intensity (Tu = 1%–12.5%), and film hole geometry. The effectiveness distributions are obtained on three separate flat plates containing either simple angle, cylindrical holes, simple angle, fanshaped holes (α = 10°), or simple angle, laidback, fanshaped holes (α = 10°, γ = 10°). In all three cases, the film cooling holes are angled at θ = 35° from the mainstream flow. Using the PSP technique, the combined effects of blowing ratio, turbulence intensity, and density ratio are captured for each film cooling geometry. The detailed film cooling effectiveness distributions, for cylindrical holes, clearly show the effectiveness at the lowest blowing ratio is enhanced at the lower density ratio (DR = 1). However, as the blowing ratio increases, a transition occurs, leading to increased effectiveness with the elevated density ratio (DR = 1.4). In addition, the PSP technique captures an upstream shift of the coolant jet reattachment point as the density ratio increases or the turbulence intensity increases (at moderate blowing ratios for cylindrical holes). With the decreased momentum of the shaped film cooling holes, the greatest film cooling effectiveness is obtained at the lower density ratio (DR = 1.0) over the entire range of blowing ratios considered. In all cases, as the freestream turbulence intensity increases, the film effectiveness decreases; this effect is reduced as the blowing ratio increases for all three film hole configurations.

The effect of varying coolant density on film cooling effectiveness for a turbine blade-model was numerically investigated and compared with experimental data. This model had a semi-circular leading edge with four rows of laterally-inclined film cooling orifices positioned symmetrically about the stagnation line. A curvilinear coordinate-based CFD code was developed and used for the numerical investigation. The code used a domain segmentation strategy in conjunction with general curvilinear grids to model the complex blade configuration. A multigrid method was used to accelerate the convergence rate. The time-averaged, variable-density, Navier-Stokes equations together with the energy or scalar equation were solved. Turbulence closure was attained by the standard k–ε model with a near-wall k model. Either air or CO2 was used as coolant in three cases of injection through single rows and alternatively staggered double raws of holes. Two different blowing rates were investigated in each case and compared with experimental data. The experimental results were obtained using a wind tunnel model, and the mass/heat analogy was used to determine the film cooling effectiveness. The higher density of the carbon dioxide coolant (approximately 1.5 times the density of air) in the isothermal mass injection experiments, was used to simulate the effects of injection of a colder air in the corresponding adiabatic heat transfer situation. Good agreement between calculated and measured film cooling effectiveness was found for low blowing ratio M ≤ 0.5 and the effect of density was not significant. At higher blowing ratio M > 1 the calculations consistently overpredict the measured values of film cooling effectiveness.

As an advanced cooling scheme to meet increasingly stringent combustor cooling requirements, multihole film cooling has received considerable attention. Experimental data of this cooling scheme are limited in the open literature in terms of different hole patterns and blowing ratios. The heat-mass transfer analogy method was employed to measure adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of three multihole patterns. Three hole patterns differed in streamwise row spacing (S), spanwise hole pitch (P), and hole inclination angle (α), with the first pattern S∕P=2 and α=30°, the second S∕P=1 and α=30°, and the third S∕P=2 and α=150°. Measurements were performed at different blow ratios (M=1-4). Streamwise coolant injection offers high cooling protection for downstream rows. Reverse coolant injection provides superior cooling protection for initial rows. The effect of blowing ratio on cooling effectiveness is small for streamwise injection but significant for reversion injection.

Abstract This work is an experimental study of film cooling effectiveness on a blade tip in a stationary, linear cascade. The cascade is mounted in a blowdown facility with controlled inlet and exit Mach numbers of 0.29 and 0.75, respectively. The free stream turbulence intensity is measured to be 13.5 % upstream of the blade’s leading edge. A flat tip design is studied, having a tip gap of 1.6%. The blade tip is designed to have 15 shaped film cooling holes along the near-tip pressure side (PS) surface. Fifteen vertical film cooling holes are placed on the tip near the pressure side. The cooling holes are divided into a 2-zone plenum to locally maintain the desired blowing ratios based on the external pressure field. Two coolant injection scenarios are considered by injecting coolant through the tip holes only and both tip and PS surface holes together. The blowing ratio (M) and density ratio (DR) effects are studied by testing at blowing ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 and three density ratios of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. Three different foreign gases are used to create density ratio effect. Over-tip flow leakage is also studied by measuring the static pressure distributions on the blade tip using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurement technique. In addition, detailed film cooling effectiveness is acquired to quantify the parametric effect of blowing ratio and density ratio on a plane tip design. Increasing the blowing ratio and density ratio resulted in increased film cooling effectiveness at all injection scenarios. Injecting coolant on the PS and the tip surface also resulted in reduced leakage over the tip. The conclusions from this study will provide the gas turbine designer with additional insight on controlling different parameters and strategically placing the holes during the design process.

This paper presents the investigation on the effects of the blowing ratio of multiple shallow angle film cooling holes. Multiple film cooling holes having a shallow hole angle (θ = 20°), arranged to perform in-line hole configuration has been considered in the present study. The investigation focuses on the effects of high blowing ratio of the film cooling effectiveness which have been carried out at ReD= 3100 and BR = 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0. The experiments make use of the IR camera in capturing the surface temperature to determine the film cooling effectiveness. The contours of the film cooling effectiveness distribution together with plots on laterally average film cooling effectiveness along the x/D are presented. The discussions have been made with a support of the temperature field captured at x/D = 3, 13, 23, and 33. The results clearly show the benefit of the employment of shallow hole angle (θ = 20°) at high blowing ratio which is much more superior in comparison to the common hole configuration (θ = 35°).

Effects of the presence of squealer, the locations of the film-cooling holes, and the tip-gap clearance on the film-cooling effectiveness were studied and compared to those for a plane (flat) tip. The film-cooling effectiveness distributions were measured on the blade tip using the pressure-sensitive paint technique. Air and nitrogen gas were used as the film-cooling gases, and the oxygen concentration distribution for each case was measured. The film-cooling effectiveness information was obtained from the difference of the oxygen concentration between air and nitrogen gas cases by applying the mass transfer analogy. Plane tip and squealer tip blades were used while the film-cooling holes were located (a) along the camber line on the tip or (b) along the tip of the pressure side. The average blowing ratio of the cooling gas was 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0. Tests were conducted with a stationary, five-bladed linear cascade in a blow-down facility. The free-stream Reynolds number, based on the axial chord length and the exit velocity, was 1,138,000, and the inlet and the exit Mach numbers were 0.25 and 0.6, respectively. Turbulence intensity level at the cascade inlet was 9.7%. All measurements were made at three different tip-gap clearances of 1%, 1.5%, and 2.5% of blade span. Results show that the locations of the film-cooling holes and the presence of squealer have significant effects on surface static pressure and film-cooling effectiveness, with film-cooling effectiveness increasing with increasing blowing ratio.
