Active Vibration Control of Beams By Combining Precompressed Layer Damping and ACLD Treatment: Theory and Experimental Implementation

By attaching initially stressed poly vinyl chloride (PVC) layers on the flexible structures, necessary passive damping can be provided. Using passive constrained layers on these PVC layers, the efficiency can be made even better than ordinary passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) treatment. By using stressed PVC layers, a rich performance in case of circuit failure conditions is always available. An active constraining layer further enhances the damping performance of this passive technique. Precompressed layer damping treatment augmented with active constrained layer damping (ACLD) treatment has been suggested, which has many desirable features as compared to existing pretensed layer damping treatment. Such enhancement in damping performance is not possible by conventional ACLD as well as PCLD techniques. The effect of initial strain (compressive or tensile) and other parameters of the PVC layers on the vibration characteristics of flexible structure have been investigated. The Hamilton principle in conjunction with finite element method is used to derive the differential equations of motion. Using proportional feedback controllers, the complex closed loop eigenvalue problem is developed and solved numerically. The effectiveness of the proposed technique has been validated experimentally using a digital linear quadratic Gaussian controller.

In this paper, active vibration control performance of the smart hull structure with Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) is evaluated. The governing equations of motion of the hull structure with MFC actuators are derived based on the classical Donnell-Mushtari shell theory. Subsequently, modal characteristics are investigated and compared with the results obtained from finite element analysis and experiment. The governing equations of vibration control system are then established and expressed in the state space form. Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control algorithm is designed in order to effectively and actively control the imposed vibration. The controller is experimentally realized and control performances are evaluated.

Due to widespread applications of a large number of flexible structures, to obtain the best dynamic control performance of a system, optimal locations of the actuators and sensors are necessary to be determined. This article proposes a novel optimal criterion for the actuators or sensors ensuring good controllability or observability of a structure, and also considering the remaining modes to control the spillover effect. Based on the proposed optimization criteria, a non-linear integer programming genetic algorithm is employed to achieve the optimal configurations. Active vibration control is investigated for a cantilever plate with the actuators in optimal positions to suppress the specified modes utilizing linear quadratic regulator controller. Several simulation results validate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed optimal criteria.

Hybrid damping designs with active piezoelectric materials and passive viscoelastic materials (VEMs) combine the advantages of both active and passive constrained layer damping treatments. In this study, experiments have been conducted on nine systems viz., bare beam, active damping (AD), passive constrained layer damping (PCLD—three variants) and hybrid active∕passive constrained layer damping (Hybrid AD∕PCLD—four variants). Based on the time domain analysis of these systems, it is shown that the “best” performance is obtained using a hybrid damping configuration wherein the VEM and the piezoelectric layers are acting separately.

Abstract In this paper we present an experimental investigation of active vibration control of a scaled bridge tower model under artificial wind excitation. The control scheme is designed on the basis of a reduced order model of the flexible structures using the LQ control theory, with a collocation of four laser displacement sensors and two hybrid electro-magnetic actuators. The experimental results in the wind tunnel show that both the bending and the twisting vibrations covering the first five modes of the structure are controlled well.

Rotating beams are quite common in rotating machinery e.g. fans of compressors in an airplane. This paper presents the experimental, hybrid, structural vibration control of flexible structures to enhance the vibration behavior of rotating beams. Smart materials have been used as sensors as well as actuators. Passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) treatment is combined with stressed layer damping technique to enhance the damping characteristics of the flexible beam. To further enhance the damping parameters, a closed form robust feedback controller is applied to reduce the broadband structural vibrations of the rotating beam. The feed forward controller is designed by combing with the feedback controller using a pattern search based optimization technique. The hybrid controller enhances the performance of the closed loop system. Experiments have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the presented technique.

Abstract In order to realize living comfort of tall buildings by reducing the vibration of higher floors by strong winds, this paper proposes a new method of vibration control for flexible structures with a large scale. The higher a tall building the lower its natural frequency. Since obtaining sufficient force to control the lower frequency vibrations of tall buildings is a difficult task, controlling the vibration of ultra-tall buildings using active dynamic absorbers is nearly impossible. This problem can be overcome by placing actuators between a pair of two or three ultra-tall buildings and using the vibrational force of each building to offset the vibrational movement of its paired mate. Therefore, it is able to obtain enough control force under the low frequency when the proposed method is used. In this paper, a reduced-order model expressed by 2DOF system under taking into consideration for preventing spillover instability is applied to control each flexible structure. The LQ control theory is applied to the design of such a control system. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated theoretically as well as experimentally.

Abstract For controlling multi-modes of vibration of flexible bridge towers under construction, a lumped mass modeling method and a new method of simple robust control are proposed. Although the robust control theory such as H∞ theory is useful for controlling systems with unknown factors and variable parameters, it is not effective to control multi-modes of vibration of flexible structures. This proposed methods are specified by combining the suboptimal control theory for reducing sensor number and filtering technique for preventing spillover of neglected high modes of vibration. Effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by showing that the first five modes of vibration of a model structure of flexible bridge tower are well controlled without spillover of neglected high modes.
