Comparative Study of Optimization Techniques in Sizing Mesostructures for Use in NonPneumatic Tires

This paper presents a comparative study on the size optimization of four mesostructures to meet the design requirements for a nonpneumatic tire's (NPT) shear beam with 10% shear flexure (SF) at 10 MPa effective shear modulus. The need for such comparison is motivated from the previous research wherein a systematic design method is proposed to design a mesostructure with high SF by studying the strain energy distribution pattern in honeycomb, auxetic, and sinusoidal auxetic mesostructure. Based upon the distribution pattern, a new type of mesostructure termed S-type is invented. Although it exhibited higher SF than the other mesostructures for a comparable set of geometry, it is not possible to validate the design method without exploring the complete design space of both existing and newly invented mesostructures. In order to address this limitation, these four mesostructures are optimized using the following optimization algorithms: (i) particle swarm; (ii) genetic algorithm (GA); and (iii) FAST–SIMPLEX (using response surface method). The results show the S-type mesostructure can be configured to meet the design requirements, thereby validating the design method presented in previous research. Additionally, it is also observed that auxetic mesostructure is only 5% less than the required design target, which presents an opportunity in future, to develop an alternate design method to maximize SF other than the one that is being validated in this paper.

The cable-pylon anchorage zone is a typical D-region in a cable-stayed bridge, for which there has been no uniform simplified design method until now. In this paper, based on the extensive statistics of actual projects, topology optimization techniques and principle of minimum strain energy, two precise strut-and-tie models for the cable-pylon anchorage zone are proposed, which can clearly reveal the load-transmitting mechanism of the anchorage zone. Th e explicit geometric parameters of the strut-and-tie models are derived; thus, the designers can directly use these models. A simple design procedure to deploy prestressing tendons in the anchorage zone is also introduced, whose effectiveness and convenience are demonstrated by two design examples. A new design named the “one-way prestressing tendons PC cable-pylon” is also discussed regarding its application scope.

The article presents a contemporary view of the study of piyyut, demonstrating that Jewish poetry of late antiquity (in Hebrew and Aramaic) was closely related to Christian liturgical poetry (both Syriac and Greek) and Samaritan liturgy. These relations were expressed primarily by common poetic and prosodic characteristics, derived on the one hand from ancient Semitic poetry (mainly biblical poetry), and on the other from innovations of the period. The significant connections of content between the different genres of poetry reveal the importance of comparative study. Thus the poetry composed in late antiquity provides additional evidence for the lively cultural dialogue that took place at that time.

Abstract As a kind of fast and efficient mixing equipment, micromixer has been applied to chemical reaction detection. Its application can not only save experimental samples but also reduce the experimental time. In micromixers, Tesla structure is widely used due to its simple structure and special flow mechanism. In this paper, CFD and response surface method are used to analyze and verify the flow field of the configuration of adding diamond obstacles in the Tesla mixer. The results show that the order of layout parameter weight from large to small is obstacle size > vertical offset > horizontal offset. And the Desirability was 0.806, the optimal diamond obstacle size is 46.35 μm and the optimal lateral offset is 18.78 μm. In addition, a constant value OF 20 μm is predicted as the optimal vertical offset of the micromixer. Compared with the Tesla-type micromixer without obstacles, the diamond-shaped barrier Tesla-type micromixer designed in this paper has higher mixing rate and lower pressure drop under the same conditions, which can be applied to chemical reactors, and can also help to improve the accuracy of chemical reaction. It can be demonstrated that the presented optimal design method of obstacles layout in Tesla mixer is a simple and effective technology to improve the liquid mixing in microfluidic devices, and it has a broad application prospect in chemical engineering.

In modern society, a plenty of car accident is occurred and a lot of people get injury every day. For this reason, the importance of car safety has been increased and car safety has been extensively studied. Especially in many countries, the law about using baby safety seat is legislated to protect babies and children from accident. Thus, recently numerous products for baby safety have been developed. In this paper, a new type baby car seat is proposed to protect babies and children from frontal accident. In order to achieve this goal, design requirements of spring and MR(Magnetorheological) Damper which are main elements for a new type baby car seat are investigated.


The Chert Bed of Middle, or possibly Lower, Old Red Sandstone age discovered by Dr. W. Mackie (1914) at Rhynie, in Aberdeenshire, has become famous among palæo-botanists on account of the beautifully preserved remains of the earliest known land plants, described by the late Dr. Kidston and Prof. Lang (1917-1921). In addition to the plants, however, the Rhynie Chert also contains animal remains, for the most part very small and in a very fragmentary condition, although the fragments themselves are in many cases exceedingly well preserved. The vast majority of these animal remains are evidently Crustacean in character, and it was at first thought (see British Association Report, 1919, p. 110) that they belonged to several, or at least to two, different species. Subsequent work has, however, convinced me that all the Crustacean remains so far seen in the Rhynie Chert belong to the one species described in this paper.

This paper proposed a novel concept of active balancer for dynamic balancing of planar mechanisms. Somewhat similar to a vibration absorber, the active balancer is designed as an independent device, which is placed outside of the mechanism to be balanced and can be installed easily. It consists of a two degree-of-freedom (DOF) linkage with two input shafts, one of which is connected to the output shaft of the mechanism to be balanced by a joint coupling, and the other one is driven by a controllable motor. Flexible dynamic balancing adapted to different working conditions can be achieved by varying speed trajectories of the control motor actively. A design method is developed for selecting suitable speed trajectories and link parameters of the two DOF linkage of the balancer to meet various design requirements and constraints. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the design procedure and to verify the feasibility of the proposed concept.
