Large Eddy Simulation of the Rotating Stall in a Pump-Turbine Operated in Pumping Mode at a Part-Load Condition

The investigation of the rotating stall phenomenon appearing in the HYDRODYNA pump-turbine reduced scale model is carried out by performing a large-scale large eddy simulation (LES) computation using a mesh featuring approximately 85 × 106 elements. The internal flow is computed for the pump-turbine operated at 76% of the best efficiency point (BEP) in pumping mode, for which previous experimental research evidenced four rotating stall cells. To achieve an adequate resolution near the wall, the Reynolds number is decreased by a factor of 25 than that of the experiment, by assuming that the flow of our interest is not strongly affected by the Reynolds number. The computations are performed on the supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX10 of the University of Tokyo using the overset finite-element open source code FrontFlow/blue with the dynamic Smagorinsky turbulence model. It is shown that the rotating stall phenomenon is accurately simulated using the LES approach. The results show an excellent agreement with available experimental data from the reduced scale model tested at the EPFL Laboratory for hydraulic machines. The number of stall cells as well as the propagation speed agree well with the experiment. Detailed investigations on the computed flow fields have clarified the propagation mechanism of the stall cells.

The effect of the spanwise discretisation on numerical calculations of the turbulent flow around a circular cylinder is systematically assessed at a subcritical Reynolds number of 10000 in the frame of three-dimensional large-eddy simulation. The eddy-viscosity k-equation subgrid scale model is implemented to evaluate unsteady turbulent flow field. Large-eddy simulation is known to be a reliable method to resolve such a challenging flow field, however, the high computational efforts restrict to low Reynolds number flow or two-dimensional calculations. Therefore, minimum spatial density in the spanwise direction or cylinder axis direction needs to be carefully evaluated in order to reduce high computational resources. In the present study, the influence of the spanwise resolutions to satisfactorily represent three- dimensional complex flow features is discussed in detail and minimum spatial density for high Reynolds flow is suggested.

The flow around a generic passenger car under the influence of crosswind was predicted using large eddy simulation (LES). The Reynolds number based on the incoming velocity the car’s length, L used was Re = 9 × 105. Yaw angles of crosswind of 10°, 20° and 30° were studied and the LES results were compared with the experimental observations and previous Reynolds averaged Naviers-Stokes (RANS) and detached eddy simulations (DES). The present LES were found to predict flows in better agreement with the experimental observations than previous RANS and DES. This shows that LES is better suited than RANS or DES for moderate Reynolds number flows around scale-model car in crosswinds which are inherently unsteady with regions of massive separations.

Large eddy simulation of turbulent flow around smooth and rough hemispherical domes was conducted. The roughness of the rough dome was generated by a special approach using quadrilateral solid blocks placed alternately on the dome surface. It was shown that this approach is capable of generating the roughness effect with a relative success. The subgrid-scale model based on the transport of the subgrid turbulent kinetic energy was used to account for the small scales effect not resolved by large eddy simulation. The turbulent flow was simulated at a subcritical Reynolds number based on the approach free stream velocity, air properties, and dome diameter of 1.4 × 105. Profiles of mean pressure coefficient, mean velocity, and its root mean square were predicted with good accuracy. The comparison between the two domes showed different flow behavior around them. A flattened horseshoe vortex was observed to develop around the rough dome at larger distance compared with the smooth dome. The separation phenomenon occurs before the apex of the rough dome while for the smooth dome it is shifted forward. The turbulence-affected region in the wake was larger for the rough dome.
