In fluid-saturated granular materials, the physicochemical interaction between pore-fluids and grain minerals alters packing conditions, which in turn leads to stress change deformation and, in extreme cases, even collapse. Chemical weathering, either naturally occurring or induced by human activities, is among such natural processes. This article presents an experimental study illustrating the major effects of chemical weathering on the deformation and stress state of granular materials, emphasising particulate systems entirely made by highly soluble carbonate grains. Laboratory experiments are conducted by subjecting acidic environments to granular assemblies under oedometric condition. The reaction rate is controlled by regulating various testing parameters, such as acid concentration and pore fluid flow rate. Experiments revealed that the lateral earth pressure steadily reduces in some cases, while others exhibit non-monotonic evolution. From a macroscopic standpoint, the rate of the chemical reaction was critical to determine the emergence of either of these trends. Such findings are relevant for any particulate system in which the stress conditions are controlled by multi-physical processes proceeding at different rates, such as waste products within bioreactors, gouge materials within faults and natural deposits subjected to the injection/extraction of reactive fluids.

Abstract Numerical studies were conducted on the hydrodynamics of a freely falling rigid sphere in bounded and unbounded water domains to investigate the drag coefficient, normalized velocity, pressure coefficient, and skin friction coefficient as a function of dimensionless time. The bounded domain was simulated by bringing the cylindrical water container's wall closer to the impacting rigid sphere and linking it to the blockage ratio (BR), defined as the ratio of the projection area of a freely falling sphere to that of the cross-section area of the cylindrical water container. Six cases of bounded domains (BR= 1%, 25%, 45%, 55%, 65%, and 75%) were studied. However, the unbounded domain was considered with a BR of 0.01%. In addition, the k–ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model was employed, and the computed results of the bounded domain were compared with those of other studies on unbounded domains. In the case of the bounded domain, which has a higher value of BR, a substantial reduction in normalized velocity and an increase in the drag coefficient were found. Moreover, the bounded domain yielded a significant increase in the pressure coefficient when the sphere was half-submerged; however, an insignificant effect was found on the skin friction coefficient. In the case of the unbounded domain, a significant reduction in the normalized velocity occurred with a decrease in the Reynold number (Re) whereas the drag coefficient increases with a decrease in Reynolds number.

Cardiovascular dysfunction in children born after in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been of great concern, the potential molecular mechanisms for such long-term outcomes are still unknown. Here, we found that systolic blood pressure was a little higher in IVF born offspring at 2 years old compared to those born after being naturally conceived. Besides, the expression level of maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3) was higher in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) from IVF offspring than that in spontaneously born offspring. Pearson correlation test showed that MEG3 relative expression is significantly related to the children's blood pressure (Coefficient = 0.429, P = 0.0262). Furthermore, we found decreased expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) along with elevated expression of endothelial-1(ET1) in HUVECs from IVF offspring, accompanied by lower secretion of nitrite, VEGF, and higher secretion of ET1 in the umbilical cord serum of IVF offspring. Correlation analysis showed MEG3 expression highly correlated with ET1 and Nitrate concentration. With pyrosequencing technology, we found that elevated expression of MEG3 was the result of hypomethylation of the MEG3 promoter. Therefore, our results provide a potential mechanism addressing the high-risk of hypertension in IVF offspring via MEG3 epigenetic regulation.

The hyperbolic thin-shell cooling tower is a typical wind-sensitive structure. The full-size measurement is the most direct and important way to study the distribution of wind pressure on the surface of the cooling tower. Due to the limitations of engineering conditions and meteorological conditions, the field measured data are relatively lacking, and the field test data of ribbed cooling towers are less. In order to analyze the wind pressure distribution on the surface of the cooling tower, we chose a ribbed cooling tower in Toksun County, Xinjiang, China, where there are strong winds all year round, and field measurements were carried out to understand the wind load characteristics of the tower under the perennial dominant wind direction and the maximum wind direction. It was found that the absolute value of the negative pressure on the leeward side was larger than that in the code and the fluctuating wind pressure coefficient fluctuates greatly when the field measured wind speed was greater than 10m/s (15 meters above the ground). For circular section cooling tower, the Reynolds number (Re) has great influence on wind pressure. With the increase of Re, the absolute value of the average negative pressure of the tail wind pressure coefficient increases, which should be paid attention to in design. The regression curves of the average wind pressure coefficients measured on site under several typical working conditions are given by using the least square method, and its form is consistent with the standard (but the coefficients are different). In addition, Fluent software was used to calculate the external wind pressure of the cooling tower, and the field measured results were compared with the Chinese code, German code and numerical calculation, and the results were consistent.

Rainfall is often accompanied by strong winds. The large-span roof structure has a low height, its surrounding turbulence is high, and the wind speed changes greatly. The effects of coaction of wind and rain on the roofs cannot be ignored. Wind-driven rain (WDR) is an oblique movement phenomenon of raindrops generated by wind flow. Four types of hyperbolic roofs, that is, square, rectangular, circular, and elliptical, are selected as the objective to study the wind-driven rain by CFD simulation. Effects of wind direction, wind speed, and rainfall intensity on the WDR are analyzed. Pressure distribution of four types of hyperbolic roofs under coaction of wind and rain is obtained. The results are compared with those from the wind action only. The roofs are partitioned to obtain the coaction of wind and rain pressure of the four large-span hyperbolic roofs with different shapes under the most unfavorable working conditions. The results show that the average pressure coefficient of the roof surface increases with the increase of wind speed and rainfall intensity. The reference value of the average pressure coefficient of wind-driven rain on the surface of the roof is given, which provides a reference basis for the design of wind-driven rain on similar hyperbolic roofs.

In this paper, the numerical model of a centrifugal compressor low-flow stage is verified. The gaps and labyrinth seals were simulated in the numerical model. The task was to determine the optimal settings for high-quality modeling of the low-flow stages. The intergrid interface application issues, turbulence and roughness models are considered. The obtained numerical model settings are used to validate seven model stages for the range of the optimal conditional flow coefficient with Φopt = 0.008–0.018 and the conditional Mach number Mu = 0.785–0.804. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data. The high pressure stage-7 (HPS-7) stage with Φopt = 0.010 and Mu = 0.60 at different inlet pressure of 4, 10 and 40 atm is considered separately. Acceptable validation results are obtained with the recommended numerical model settings; the modeling uncertainty for the polytropic pressure coefficient δη*pol < 4% for the efficiency coefficient δη*pol exceeds the limit of 4% only in the two most low-flow stages, U and V.

In this study, the drag reduction effect is studied for a cylinder with different V-groove depths on its surface using a k-ω/SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), while a particle image velocimetry (PIV) system is employed to analyze the wake characteristics for a smooth cylinder and a cylinder with different V-groove depths on its surface at different Reynolds numbers. The study focuses on the characteristics of the different V-groove depths on lift coefficient, drag coefficient, the velocity distribution of flow field, pressure coefficient, vortex shedding, and vortex structure. In comparison with a smooth cylinder, the lift coefficient and drag coefficient can be reduced for a cylinder with different V-groove depths on its surface, and the maximum reduction rates of lift coefficient and drag coefficient are about 34.4% and 16%, respectively. Otherwise, the vortex structure presents a complete symmetry for the smooth cylinder, however, the symmetry of the vortex structure becomes insignificant for the V-shaped groove structure with different depths. This is also an important reason for the drag reduction effect of a cylinder with a V-groove surface.

Based on CFD analysis technology, this paper studies the cavitation performance of an LNG submerged pump and the pressure pulsation characteristics under cavitation excitation. The variation laws of the waveform, amplitude and frequency of the pressure pulsation in the impeller of the LNG submerged pump under different flow rates and NPSHa are also analysed. By calculating the root mean square of the pressure coefficient of the low-frequency pulsation, the influence of the aggravation process of cavitation on the low-frequency pulsation in the LNG submerged pump is quantitatively analysed, and the characteristics of the pressure pulsation in the LNG submerged pump under the cavitation condition are revealed. The results show that with the increase in flow rate, the pressure pulsation in the impeller becomes stronger, periodically, and the amplitude decreases. The influence of cavitation on the pressure pulsation in the primary impeller is greater than that in the secondary impeller. When critical cavitation occurs, the low-frequency signal amplitude of pressure pulsation in the primary impeller increases and exceeds the blade frequency, becoming the main frequency.
