A hot-wire technique was used to measure turbulence characteristics in the vicinity of the stagnation line of circular cylinders and a turbine blade model (a chord length of 1 metre). Heat transfer intensity at the stagnation line of the cylinders was also measured by on-surface probes. The experiments were carried out in a wide range of the Reynolds number based on the blade leading edge/cylinder diameter, D (Re = 2.103–2.106) and integral length scale of free-stream turbulence, Le (Le = 0.1–10D) at two values of free stream turbulence intensity, Tu (Tu = 0.02 and 0.10). Along with the experimental data results of the 2D RANS computations are presented of the flow and heat transfer at the circular cylinder with the use of two turbulence models: a two-equation, k-ω SST, model of Menter, and a new two-equation, ν1-L, model developed in the course of the present study.

The purpose of the present work was twofold: first, to determine if a length scale existed that would cause the greatest augmentation in stagnation region heat transfer for a given turbulence intensity and second, to develop a prediction tool for stagnation heat transfer in the presence of free stream turbulence. Toward this end, a model with a circular leading edge was fabricated with heat transfer gages in the stagnation region. The model was qualified in a low turbulence wind tunnel by comparing measurements with Frossling's solution for stagnation region heat transfer in a laminar free stream. Five turbulence generating grids were fabricated; four were square mesh, biplane grids made from square bars. Each had identical mesh to bar width ratio but different bar widths. The fifth grid was an array of fine parallel wires that were perpendicular to the axis of the cylindrical leading edge. Turbulence intensity and integral length scale were measured as a function of distance from the grids. Stagnation region heat transfer was measured at various distances downstream of each grid. Data were taken at cylinder Reynolds numbers ranging from 42,000 to 193,000. Turbulence intensities were in the range 1.1 to 15.9 percent while the ratio of integral length scale to cylinder diameter ranged from 0.05 to 0.30. Stagnation region heat transfer augmentation increased with decreasing length scale. An optimum scale was not found. A correlation was developed that fit heat transfer data for the square bar grids to within ±4%. The data from the array of wires were not predicted by the correlation; augmentation was higher for this case indicating that the degree of isotropy in the turbulent flow field has a large effect on stagnation heat transfer. The data of other researchers are also compared with the correlation.

The effects of the longitudinal turbulence intensity parameter of free-stream turbulence (FST) on heat transfer were studied using the aggressive flow characteristics of a circular tangential wall jet over a constant heat flux surface. Profile measurements of velocity, temperature, integral length scale, and spectra were obtained at downstream locations (2 to 20 x/D) and turbulence intensities (7 to 18 percent). The results indicated that the Stanton number (St) and friction factor (Cf) increased with increasing turbulence intensity. The Reynolds analogy factor (2St/Cf) increased up to turbulence intensities of 12 percent, then became constant, and decreased after 15 percent. This factor was also found to be dependent on the Reynolds number (Rex) and plate configuration. The influence of length scale, as found by previous researchers, was inconclusive at the conditions tested.

A study has been conducted at the NASA Lewis Research Center to investigate the mechanism that causes free-stream turbulence to increase heat transfer in the stagnation region of turbine vanes and blades. The work was conducted in a wind tunnel at atmospheric conditions to facilitate measurements of turbulence and heat transfer. The model size was scaled up to simulate Reynolds numbers (based on leading edge diameter) that are to be expected on a turbine blade leading edge. Reynolds numbers from 13,000 to 177,000 were run in the present tests. Spanwise averaged heat transfer measurements with high and low turbulence have been made with “rough” and smooth surface stagnation regions. Results of these measurements show that, at the Reynolds numbers tested, the boundary layer remained laminar in character even in the presence of free-stream turbulence. If roughness was added the boundary layer became transitional as evidenced by the heat transfer increase with increasing distance from the stagnation line. Hot-wire measurements near the stagnation region downstream of an array of parallel wires has shown that vorticity in the form of mean velocity gradients is amplified as flow approaches the stagnation region. Finally smoke wire flow visualization and liquid crystal surface heat transfer visualization were combined to show that, in the wake of an array of parallel wires, heat transfer was a minimum in the wire wakes where the fluctuating component of velocity (local turbulence) was the highest. Heat transfer was found to be the highest between pairs of vortices where the induced velocity was toward the cylinder surface.

The publication of the present authors’ boundary layer transition data in 1992 (now widely known as the ERCOFTAC test case T3) has led to a spate of new experimental and modelling efforts aimed at improving our understanding of this problem. This paper describes a new method of determining boundary layer transition with zero mean pressure gradient. The approach examines the development of a laminar boundary layer to the start of transition, accounting for the influences of free-stream turbulence and test surface geometry. It is presented as a “proof of concept”, requiring a significant amount of work before it can be considered as a practically applicable model for transition prediction. The method is based upon one first put forward by G.I. Taylor in the 1930’s, and accounts for the action of local, instantaneous pressure gradients on the developing laminar boundary layer. These pressure gradients are related to the intensity and length scale of turbulence in the free-stream using Taylor’s simple isotropic model. The findings demonstrate the need to account for the separate influences of free-stream turbulence intensity and length scale when considering the transition process. Although the length scale has less of an effect than the intensity, its influence is, nevertheless, significant and must not be overlooked. This fact goes a long way towards explaining the large scatter to be found in simple correlations which involve only the turbulence intensity. Intriguingly, it is demonstrated that it is the free-stream turbulence at the leading edge of the test surface which is important, not that found locally outside the boundary layer. The additional influence of leading edge geometry is also shown to play a major role in fixing the point at which transition begins. It is suggested that the leading edge geometry will distort the incident turbulent eddies, modifying the effective “free-stream” turbulence properties. Consequently, it is shown that the scale of the eddies relative to the leading edge thickness is a further important parameter, and helps bring together a large number of test cases.

In the present work, a numerical study has been performed to simulate the effect of free-stream turbulence, length scale and variations in rotational speed of the rotor on heat transfer and fluid flow for a transonic high-pressure turbine stage with tip clearance. The stator and rotor rows interact via a mixing plane, which allows the stage to be computed in a steady manner. The focus is on turbine aerodynamics and heat transfer behavior at the mid-span location, and at the rotor tip and casing region. The results of the fully 3D CFD simulations are compared with experimental results available for the so-called MT1 turbine stage. The predicted heat transfer and static pressure distributions show reasonable agreement with the experimental data. In general, the local Nusselt number increases, at the same turbulence length scale, as the turbulence intensity increases, and the location of the suction side boundary layer transition moves upstream towards the blade leading edge. Comparison of the different length scales at the same turbulence intensity shows that the stagnation heat transfer was significantly increased as the length scale increased. However, the length scale evidenced no significant effects on blade tip or rotor casing heat transfer. Also, the results presented in this paper show that the rotational speed in addition to the turbulence intensity and length scale has an important contribution to the turbine blade aerodynamics and heat transfer.

The thermal efficiency of gas turbine engines increases with turbine inlet temperature (TIT) directly. However, the TIT is limited by the allowable temperature of current blade materials. Film cooling technique is an effective method to maintain turbine vane working smoothly under high TIT conditions. The adiabatic film effectiveness has been widely employed to understand film cooling mechanism. Therefore, the prediction of the adiabatic effectiveness of gas turbine engines under real operating conditions is essential. The showerhead film cooled turbine vane reported by L. P. Timko (NASA CR-168289) is adopted in the present study. There are two rows of film holes on the leading edge, three rows on the pressure side, and two rows on the suction side. All holes are cylindrical, which are placed at an angle of 45 degrees to the vane surface in the span-wise direction. This numerical investigation discusses the influences of free stream turbulence intensity on the adiabatic film effectiveness in the vane leading edge region and its vicinity. Five two-equation turbulence models based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) are employed to predict the adiabatic film effectiveness under real operating conditions at a blowing ratio (BR) of 1.41 and three free stream turbulence intensities (Tu=3.3, 10, and 20%). The adiabatic film effectiveness on the vane surface at 8, 52.5, and 89% span in an x/C range between −0.4 and 0.4 is presented. Obviously, the numerical results predicted by all five models show that on the suction side, the increasing free stream turbulence intensity can reduce film effectiveness except at 8% span. On the pressure side, the RNG k-ε, Realizable k-ε and SST k-ω models predict the same trend of the adiabatic film effectiveness, especially the RNG k-ε and SST k-ω models. Those three models predict that the locally adiabatic film effectiveness (especially near film holes) can be improved when turbulence intensity increases. However, at a span of 89% within the x/C range between −0.4 and −0.2, all k-ε models and SST k-ω model predict that the increase of turbulence intensity can reduce the adiabatic film effectiveness. In addition, the film effectiveness contours show a significant variation of film effectiveness predicted by the five turbulence models on the leading edge when turbulence intensity increases. For the near-pressure side, all models except the Standard k-ω model predict that the high turbulence intensity can reduce the film spreading from film holes dramatically.
