E-CAFD: Extended-Effect Driven Computer-Aided Functional Design

To match for complex product function and to solve insufficient computer aid for functional design, the Extended-Effect driven Function-Behavior-Structure (EE-FBS) model is constructed. A multi-flow and multi-pole effect model is presented by extending the one with single input/output flow in TRIZ. Four effect patterns and three reasoning methods are proposed to create effect chains. The FBS model is extended to an EE-FBS model based on effect through the description of the law of mapping overall function to external behavior, from external behavior to sub-behavior, etc. A functional design process was presented based on the EE-FBS model, and the computer-aided functional design software system is developed. A design example for functional design of Chinese dropping pill medicine demonstrates the proposed method is feasible.

Functional design is the essential process of product design. Aiming at the drawbacks of traditional functional design, effect in TRIZ is introduced for function modeling, solving and simulation. The improved process model of functional design is proposed, and the computer-aided functional design software system is developed. Finally, the speedy cutting off valve is taken as an example to validate the effectiveness of the above model.

Designing reliable Web-based courseware systems is not trivial. Courseware authors need to allow as much flexibility in navigating through the system as possible on the one hand, and to ensure the satisfaction of properties and constraints in the system on the other. The problem is aggravated with facilities like Java applets which incorporate dynamic behaviour into the information structure. These issues motivate the need for designing such systems through rigorous modelling and analysis. We propose a scheme using a formal method called the Calculus of Communicating Systems (CCS) to unify the modelling of the courseware based on its navigational structure, semantics and dynamic components. Properties like ordering constraint, reachability and coverage constraint can be answered after a model is extracted from the implementation. Besides, our approach can be extended to assist in the design phase of the construction process, just like what computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tools do. A hypothetical example is used throughout the chapter as an illustration.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the determinants of Islam banks (IBs) liquidity. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the author uses a generalized least square fixed effect model on an unbalanced panel data set of all IBs operating in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries over the period 1989-2008. Findings The estimation results show that all the determinants have statistically significant relationships with IBs’ liquidity but with different signs. On the one hand, foreign ownership, credit risk, profitability, inflation rate, monetary policy and deposit insurance negatively affected IBs liquidity. On the other hand, capital ratio, size gross domestic product growth and concentration have a positive nexus with IBs’ liquidity. Originality/value According to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first empirical study to investigate the determinants of IBs liquidity using cross-country data with a large sample of IBs (110 banks) and over a long period (19 years). Also, the paper included variables that had not been discussed on the previous studies, which used cross-country data, such as efficiency, deposit insurance, monetary policy, concentration and market capitalization.

The paper presents a method developed and used by the CCHAPT researchers for the graphic plotting of the index tests results for hydraulic turbines, the comparison of the efficiency curves resulted from testing to those obtained by the model transposition [1] i.e. the determination and comparison of the existing combinatory cam with that obtained from tests.The method presented in the paper was born from the need for processing and presenting the results of index tests within the shortest delay and eliminating the errors that might occur in the results plotting.

Every year substantial amounts of property damage and numerous personal injuries result from failures of electric heating pads. This is a paradoxical situation considering that the intended product-function relates to the simple, safe, and reliable therapeutic application of heat to the human body. An investigation was conducted to determine whether traditional engineering criteria and human factors criteria were in conflict in the design of heating pads. The investigation revealed that the designers of heating pads have a tendency to overcome problems in hardware reliability by specifying how humans should behave relative to their product. Even heating pads that are Underwriters Laboratory (UL) listed contain user instructions which are unlikely to be followed under circumstances of normal use. The paper summarizes the functional design of heating pads, current instructions for their use, and applicable human factors considerations. An alternate approach to heating pad design is proposed which, if implemented, should prevent us from trading-in our heating pads for hot-water bottles. Beyond that, however, the paper serves as an example of how the application of human factors engineering principles can serve the goals of product safety and liability prevention.

<p>This  paper  presents  a  new  approach  of  fractional  order  sliding  mode <br />controllers  (FOSMC)  for  a  class  of  nonlinear  systems  which  have  a  single input and two outputs (SITO). Firstly, two fractional order sliding surfaces S1 and S2 were proposed with an intermediate variable z transferred from S2 to S1 in order to hierarchy the two sliding surfaces. Secondly, a control law was determined  in  order  to  control  the  two  outputs.  A  sliding  control  stability condition  was  obtained  by  using  the  properties  of  the  fractional  order calculus.  Finally,  the  effectiveness  and  robustness  of  the  proposed  approach  were demonstrated by comparing its performance with the one of the conventional sliding mode controller (SMC), which is based on integer order derivatives. Simulation results were provided for the cases of controlling a ball-beam and inverted pendulum systems.</p>
