Endwall Heat Transfer Enhancement Around Cylinders With a Wall-Mounted Vortex Generator Pair

Measurement of endwall heat transfer around a circular cylinder with a vortex generator pair has been investigated. Steady state liquid crystal thermography is adopted. Cylinders having two different height to diameter ratios have been employed. In one case, the cylinder has one end free in the flow and in the other case it has both ends attached on the walls. Local Nusselt numbers both upstream and downstream of the cylinder with and without the vortex generator pair are calculated. Nusselt numbers in streamwise and spanwise directions for both cases with vortex generator are compared with each other as well as with corresponding base cases. It is found from the experiments that the vortex generator influences the endwall heat transfer significantly downstream of the cylinder but has a small effect in the upstream region. Moreover, for different height to diameter ratio of the cylinder different heat transfer patterns are observed downstream of the cylinder. The vortex generator pair plays its major role on the endwall heat transfer enhancement in the spanwise direction and it expands as one moves from the upstream to downstream direction. To fully understand the advantage of the vortex generator pair, thermal performance is calculated for each case and it was found that in presence of the vortex generator pair, the cylinder with shorter height to diameter ratio shows higher thermal performance. Reynolds number dependence has also been investigated and it was found that the thermal performance decreases with increasing Reynolds number for both cases having a vortex generator pair.

An alternative to ribs for internal heat transfer enhancement of gas turbine airfoils is dimpled depressions. Relative to ribs, dimples incur a reduced pressure drop, which can increase the overall thermal performance of the channel. This experimental investigation measures detailed Nusselt number ratio distributions obtained from an array of V-shaped dimples (δ/D = 0.30). Although the V-shaped dimple array is derived from a traditional hemispherical dimple array, the V-shaped dimples are arranged in an in-line pattern. The resulting spacing of the V-shaped dimples is 3.2D in both the streamwise and spanwise directions. A single wide wall of a rectangular channel (AR = 3:1) is lined with V-shaped dimples. The channel Reynolds number ranges from 10,000–40,000. Detailed Nusselt number ratios are obtained using both a transient liquid crystal technique and a newly developed transient temperature sensitive paint (TSP) technique. Therefore, the TSP technique is not only validated against a baseline geometry (smooth channel), but it is also validated against a more established technique. Measurements indicate that the proposed V-shaped dimple design is a promising alternative to traditional ribs or hemispherical dimples. At lower Reynolds numbers, the V-shaped dimples display heat transfer and friction behavior similar to traditional dimples. However, as the Reynolds number increases to 30,000 and 40,000, secondary flows developed in the V-shaped concavities further enhance the heat transfer from the dimpled surface (similar to angled and V-shaped rib induced secondary flows). This additional enhancement is obtained with only a marginal increase in the pressure drop. Therefore, as the Reynolds number within the channel increases, the thermal performance also increases. While this trend has been confirmed with both the transient TSP and liquid crystal techniques, TSP is shown to have limited capabilities when acquiring highly resolved detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions.

Abstract The study presents the investigation on heat transfer distribution along a gas turbine blade internal cooling channel. Six different cases were considered in this study, using the smooth surface channel as a baseline. Three different dimples depth-to-diameter ratios with 0.1, 0.25, and 0.50 were considered. Different combinations of partial spherical and leaf dimples were also studied with the Reynolds numbers of 6,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, and 50,000. In addition to the experimental investigation, the numerical study was conducted using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) to validate the data. It was found that the highest depth-to-diameter ratio showed the highest heat transfer rate. However, there is a penalty for increased pressure drop. The highest pressure drop affects the overall thermal performance of the cooling channel. The results showed that the leaf dimpled surface is the best cooling channel based on the highest Reynolds number's heat transfer enhancement and friction factor. However, at the lowest Reynolds number, partial spherical dimples with a 0.25 depth to diameter ratio showed the highest thermal performance.

The heat transfer enhancement is recycled in many engineering uses such as heat exchangers, refrigeration and air conditioning structures, chemical apparatuses, and automobile radiators. Hence many enhancing extended fin patterns are developed and used. In multi louvered fin, in this segment for multi-row fin and tube heat exchanger, an increase in heat transfer enhancement is found 58% for ReH = 350. When the Reynolds number is 1075, the temperature gradient is more distinct for greater louver angle that is the higher heat transfer enhanced for large louver angle. For variable louver angle heat exchanger, the maximum heat transfer improvement achieved by 118% Reynolds number at 1075. In the vortex generator for the delta winglet vortex generator, the extreme enhancement of heat transfer increased to 16% compared to the baseline geometry (at ReDh = 600). For a compact louvered heat exchanger, the results showed that a regular arrangement of louvered fins gives a 9.3% heat transfer improvement. In multi-region louver fins and flat tubes heat exchanger, the louver fin with 4 regions and the louver fin with 6 regions are far better than the conventional fin in overall performance. At the same time, the louver fin with 6 regions is also better than the louver fin with 4-region. The available work is in experimental form as well as numerical form performed by computational fluid dynamics.


Experiments were conducted to investigate the cooling of processor to increase the thermal performance by employing a mini channel instead of conventional heat sinks. Now a day’s aluminium fin with fans is used for cooling the processor. Constant speed of the fans is found to be not enough to remove the heat generated by the processor. The experimental investigations were carried out in the channels with the hydraulic diameter of about 1.5x10-3m for the Reynolds number varying from 80 to 1150. The water is allowed to pass through the channel by virtue of which heat is rejected from the processor. The influence of Reynolds number on heat transfer enhancement from the microprocessor is discussed in details. Comparison between heat transfer by air and by water is presented. From the experiment it is disclosed that further increase in heat transfer was observed when compared to air.

Purpose – The employment of continuous ribs in a passage involves a noticeable pressure drop penalty, while other studies have shown that truncated ribs may provide a potential to reduce the pressure drop while keeping a significant heat transfer enhancement. The purpose of this paper is to perform computer-aided simulations of turbulent flow and heat transfer of a rectangular cooling passage with continuous or truncated 45-deg V-shaped ribs on opposite walls. Design/methodology/approach – Computational fluid dynamics technique is used to study the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a three-dimensional rectangular passage with continuous and truncated V-shaped ribs. Findings – The inlet Reynolds number, based on the hydraulic diameter, is ranged from 12,000 to 60,000 and a low-Re k-e model is selected for the turbulent computations. The local flow structure and heat transfer in the internal cooling passages are presented and the thermal performances of the ribbed passages are compared. It is found that the passage with truncated V-shaped ribs on opposite walls provides nearly equivalent heat transfer enhancement with a lower (about 17 percent at high Reynolds number of 60,000) pressure loss compared to a passage with continuous V-shaped ribs or continuous transversal ribs. Research limitations/implications – The fluid is incompressible with constant thermophysical properties and the flow is steady. The passage is stationary. Practical implications – New and additional data will be helpful in the design of ribbed passages to achieve a good thermal performance. Originality/value – The results imply that truncated V-shaped ribs are very effective in improving the thermal performance and thus are suggested to be applied in gas turbine blade internal cooling, especially at high velocity or Reynolds number.

Abstract The thermal performance of two V-type rib configurations is measured in a rotating, two-pass cooling channel. The coolant travels radially outward in the rectangular first pass (AR = 4:1), and travels radially inward in the second pass (AR = 2:1). Both the passages are oriented 90° to the direction of rotation. The LS and TS of the channel are roughened with V-type ribs. The first V-shaped configuration has a narrow gap at the apex of the V. The configuration is modified by off-setting one leg of the V to create a staggered discrete, V-shaped configuration. The ribs are oriented 45° relative to the streamwise coolant direction. The heat transfer enhancement and frictional losses are measured with varying Reynolds and rotation numbers. The Reynolds number varies from 10,000 to 45,000 in the AR = 4:1 first pass; this corresponds to 16,000 to 73,500 in the AR = 2:1 second pass. The maximum rotation numbers are 0.39 and 0.16 in the first and second passes, respectively. The heat transfer enhancement on both the leading and trailing surfaces of the first pass of the 45° V-shaped channel is slightly reduced with rotation. In the second pass, the heat transfer increases on the leading surface while it decreases on the trailing surface. The 45° staggered, discrete V-shaped ribs provide increased heat transfer and thermal performance compared to the traditional V-shaped and standard, 45° angled rib turbulators.

At present, vortex generators have been extensively used in radiators to improve the overall heat transfer performance. However, there is no research on the effect of vortex generators on the ends of motor coils. Meanwhile, the current research mainly concentrates on the attack angle, shape and size, and lacks a detailed study on the transverse and longitudinal distance and arrangement of vortex generators. In this paper, the improved dimensionless number is used as the key index to evaluate the overall performance of enhanced heat transfer. Firstly, the influence of the attack angle on heat transfer enhancement is discussed through a single pair of rectangular vortex generators, and the results demonstrate that the vortex generator with a 45° attack angle is superior. On this basis, we compare the effects of different longitudinal distances (2 h, 4 h, and 6 h, h meaning the height of vortex generator) on enhanced heat transfer under four distribution modes: Flow-Up (FU), Flow-Down (FU), Flow-Up-Down (FUD), Flow-Down-UP (FDU). Thereafter, the performances of different transverse distances (0.25 h, 0.5 h, and 0.75 h) of the vortex generators are numerically simulated. When comparing the longitudinal distances, FD with a longitudinal distance of 4 h (FD-4h) performs well when the Reynolds number is less than 4000, and FU with a longitudinal distance of 4 h (FU-4h) performs better when the Reynolds number is greater than 4000. Similarly, in the comparison of transverse distances, FD-4h still performs well when the Reynolds number is less than 4000, and FU with a longitudinal distance of 4 h and transverse distance of 0.5 h (FU-4h − 0.5h) is more prominent when the Reynolds number is greater than 4000.

An experimental investigation was carried for measuring tube-side heat transfer coefficient, friction factor, heat transfer enhancement efficiency of water for turbulent flow in a circular tube fitted with rectangular-cut twisted tape insert. A copper tube of 26.6 mm internal diameter and 30 mm outer diameter and 900 mm test length was used. A stainless steel rectangular-cut twisted tape insert of 5.25 twist ratio was inserted into the smooth tube. The rectangular cut had 8 mm depth and 14 mm width. A uniform heat flux condition was created by wrapping nichrome wire around the test section and fiber glass over the wire. Outer surface temperatures of the tube were measured at 5 different points of the test section by T-type thermocouples. Two thermometers were used for measuring the bulk temperatures. At the outlet section the thermometer was placed in a mixing box. The Reynolds numbers were varied in the range 10000-19000 with heat flux variation 14 to 22 kW/m2 for smooth tube, and 23 to 40 kW/m2 for tube with insert. Nusselt numbers obtained from smooth tube were compared with Gnielinski correlation and errors were found to be in the range of -6% to -25% with r.m.s. value of 20%. At comparable Reynolds number, Nusselt numbers in tube with rectangular-cut twisted tape insert were enhanced by 2.3 to 2.9 times at the cost of increase of friction factors by 1.4 to 1.8 times compared to that of smooth tube. Heat transfer enhancement efficiencies were found to be in the range of 1.9 to 2.3 and increased with the increase of Reynolds number.

The impact of vortex generator (VG) arrays for air-side heat transfer enhancement is experimentally investigated by full-scale wind-tunnel testing of a plain-fin-and-tube heat exchanger. The VG array is deployed in a “V” to try to create a constructive interference between vortices. Each array is composed of two delta-winglet pairs (four VGs), and placed at an attack angle of 10° or 30°. The frontal air velocity considered is between 2.3–5.4 m/s, corresponding to a Reynolds number range based on the hydraulic diameter of 1500–3400. The thermal-hydraulic performance of the heat exchanger with and without VG enhancement is provided under dry-surface conditions. The experimental results indicate little impact at a relatively small attack angle of 10°. While for the 30° array, a 25–55% augmentation in air-side heat transfer coefficient is measured, but with a pressure drop penalty of 100%. Nevertheless, performance evaluation using the area goodness factor and the volume goodness factor both indicate the superiority of the enhanced heat exchanger by the 30° array over the entire Reynolds number range. The proposed array is found more effective at comparatively low Reynolds numbers, representative of many HVAC&R applications and compact heat exchanger designs.
