Available theoretical solutions for the collapse pressure of open-end thick walled cylinders based on the Vo n Misses yield criterion are very limited. The known elastic-plastic theoretical solutions are primarily based on the Tresca yield criterion. So far, little study has been devoted to fairly thick open-end cylinders under external pressure. This can be performed by finite element analysis that considers material plasticity. In this paper the authors propose the use of simple formulae for the solution of the collapse internal and external pressures of open-end cylinders. The proposed formulae provide excellent agreement with finite element results obtained by the authors. Also criterion is provided for the interaction of elastic instability and plastic collapse of open-end cylinders subjected to external pressure.

An alternative design methodology by using elastic-plastic finite element analysis has been developed and published as a code case of the JSME Rules on Design and Construction for Nuclear Power Plants (The First Part: Light Water Reactor Structural Design Standard). This code case applies elastic-plastic analysis to evaluation of such failure modes as plastic collapse, shakedown, thermal ratchet and fatigue. Advantages of this evaluation method are no use of stress linearization/classification, consistent use of Mises equivalent stress and applicability to complex 3-dimentional structures which are hard to be treated by the conventional stress classification method. The evaluation method for plastic collapse consists of the Lower Bound Approach Method, Twice-Elastic-Slope Method and Elastic Compensation Method. Cyclic Yield Area (CYA) criterion based on elastic analysis is applied to screening evaluation of shakedown limit instead of secondary stress evaluation, and elastic-plastic analysis is performed when the CYA screening criterion is not satisfied. Strain concentration factors can be directly calculated based on elastic-plastic analysis.

This paper examines techniques for the evaluation of two kinds of structural imperfection, namely bulging subject to internal pressure, and out-of-round imperfections subject to external pressure, with and without creep. Comparisons between comprehensive finite element analysis and API 579 Level 2 techniques are made. It is recommended that structural, as opposed to material, failures such as these should be assessed with a structural model that explicitly represents the defect.

This paper discusses the behaviour of hollow tubes with axisymmetric internal projections subjected to combined axial and internal pressure loading. Predictions from an extensive elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analysis are presented for a typical geometry and a range of loading combinations, using a simplified bilinear elastic-perfectly plastic material model. The axial loading case, previously analysed, is extended to cover the additional effect of internal pressure. All the predicted stress and strain data are found to depend on the applied loading conditions. The results are normalized with respect to material properties and can therefore be applied to geometrically similar components made from other materials, which can be represented by the same material models.

In this paper ,it analyses the push-extend multi-under-reamed pile in use of elastic-plastic theory by the software ANSYS.It takes four push-extend multi-under-reamed piles which are the same except plates' distance. It introduces the realative theory to make the anlysis much more accuracy. The results which is taken by ANSYS are researched to find out the regularity and can certain the reasonable plate's distance to anlyze the bearing capacity of push-extend multi-under-reamed pile at the same time.
