Abstract Steel layered high-pressure hydrogen vessel is one of different kinds of high-pressure vessel, which is invented in China and is widely equipped in hydrogen refueling stations for its good safety and storage functions. Many of these vessels are put into application these years, and it is nearly the time for these vessels to go through periodic inspection. However, there is no such a method for the periodic inspection especially on the butt weld connecting the double-layer head and the interface forging. To conquer the difficulties about the periodic inspection, a set of periodic inspection methods was first proposed in a lasted released Chinese group standard, in which the inner ultrasonic phased array is considered to be the most complicated detecting approach. To establish effective inspection parameters, simulations and experiments were conducted on the factors, including coupling, elements and aperture, focal law, scanning approaches and ultrasound field. Standard test block and contrast test block were designed and machined and tested, then a series of feasible parameters were determined. Thus, specific probe, wedge and instrument were manufactured, and the inspection on the actual vessel product was carried out. The results showed that the proposed ultrasonic method and its inspection parameters could meet the periodic inspection well. Finally, the periodic inspection methods were established and issued as a standard.

Ultrasonic phased array imaging detection technology combinating the focused beam and array probe movement can get powerful test information. It has been widely used in the steel butt weld detection. For making up the limitations of 2D view, in this paper,we used one-dimensional linear array probe, got 2D slice view data obtained by phased array ultrasonic S-scan, through software programming algorithm to realize 3D reconstruction of steel butt weld typical defects. Experiment shows that it can display more intuitive performance of the defects in space. Revealing a better shape, size and orientation information. Providing a reference for the final evaluation of the defect.

The layered high-pressure hydrogen vessels are widely used in hydrogen refueling stations. The head of the high-pressure vessel is made of austenitic stainless steel, and has thick walls, a pipe with a small diameter on the top and a butt-weld structure. It’s difficult to detect effectively, using conventional methods in the inspection of the butt weld on the head. To effectively detect the weld joint, a detecting method was investigated using ultrasonic phased array technique from the inner surface of the small-diameter pipe. By axial focusing and circumferential focusing, the ultrasonic field in austenitic stainless steel could satisfy the specific inspection requirement. Some ultrasonic field analysis and defect detection simulations were carried out with CIVA, for artificial defects such as side-drilled holes. Meanwhile, the test specimen and probe were designed and manufactured, and experiments were conducted. Furthermore, the feasibility and rationality of the detecting method and the simulation method were verified, and the detecting process parameters were determined.

With strong bearing capacity, good corrosion resistance, excellent wear resistance, light weight and easy transportation and installation, Plastic pipe reinforced by cross helically wound steel wires (PSP) is widely used in oil industry, coal chemical industry, slurry transportation engineering, and sea (river) bottom water projects. Due to the PSP at middle-high pressure, an effective and reliable method of connection between pipes is particularly important. Heat-fusion weld and electro-fusion weld are usually used in middle-high PSP connections, or adding steel plate reinforcement at present. The pipe welded-joint failure is the main failure mode at service stage, causing the damage of pipelines and fluid leakage. Ultrasonic phased array inspection, which is one of the non-destructive inspection methods, is mainly used in pipe welded-joints inspection. A higher attenuation coefficient of polyolefin materials and the interference of steel mesh skeleton among PSP can cause great impact to the ultrasonic inspection; It’s worse if a steel plate is added. In order to put forward a kind of method can better detect the connection joint, this paper examines a new method of ultrasonic phased array inspection in PSP welded-joints based on customized probe, focus law and scanning mode which overcomes the difficulties found in other usual non-destructive inspection measures.
