Do not forget Africa – revision of fungarium collections at Kew revealed a new species of Hermatomyces (Hermatomycetaceae, Pleosporales)

Species of the genus Hermatomyces (Hermatomycetaceae, Pleosporales) are saprotrophic anamorphic ascomycetes that have been intensively studied mostly in South-East Asia and Panama. Species concepts were recently revised based on specimens from these regions using both phenotypic and molecular data. However, other tropical areas have been mostly overlooked, e.g. Africa, although members of the genus were collected from this continent in the past. Therefore, specimens available at the fungarium of Kew were studied. Most of them originated from western Africa, specifically Ghana and Sierra Leone, but collections from Ethiopia, India, and Malaysia were also revised. Among them, a new species was found and is described and illustrated herein as H. truncatus. The fungus colonized dead branches of Averrhoa carambola in Ghana and is characterized by two types of conidia; the cylindrical ones are 2-, rarely 3-celled, with a central or eccentric septum and the upper cells rounded but slightly flattened at the apex, often distinctly widening and dark brown or black in color. An additional collection of this fungus from Panama was also studied. Recently collected specimens from Puerto Rico and Australia are included and the known distribution of the following species is updated with new regions: H. indicus (first record from Sierra Leone), H. megasporus (Ethiopia), H. reticulatus (Ethiopia) and H. sphaericus (Puerto Rico and Australia).

A new species of the genus Cyrtodactylus is described from Dien Bien Province, northwestern Vietnam based on morphological and molecular data. Cyrtodactylus ngati sp. nov. can be distinguished from remaining congeners by the following combination of characters: maximum SVL 69.3 mm; dorsal pattern consisting of six dark irregular transverse bands between limb insertions; inter-supranasals one; dorsal tubercles present on occiput, body, hind limbs and on first half of tail; 17–22 irregular dorsal tubercle rows at midbody; lateral folds clearly defined, with interspersed tubercles; 32–38 ventral scales between ventrolateral folds; 13 precloacal pores separated by a diastema of 5/5 poreless scales from a series of 7/7 femoral pores in enlarged femoral scales; precloacal and femoral pores absent in females; 1–3 postcloacal tubercles on each side; transversely enlarged median subcaudal scales absent. In the molecular analyses, the new species is shown to be the sister taxon to C. interdigitalis from Thailand. This is the 47th species of the genus Cyrtodactylus and the first member of the C. brevipalmatus species group recorded from Vietnam.

A new species of the family Agnaridae, Lucasioides altaicus sp. nov., is described from the Altai Mountains, southwestern Siberia, based both on morphological characters and molecular data. This species is the first record of Lucasioides from Russia, whose location is the northernmost habitat of terrestrial isopods in indigenous habitats presently known to Eurasia. The diagnostic characters of the new species and a preliminary phylogenetic analysis within Agnaridae are provided.

During a soil zoological expedition to São Tomé and Príncipe in 2010 by the California Academy of Sciences, millipedes of the genus Globanus were collected. Samples of G. marginescaber (Karsch, 1884) and G. integer (Karsch, 1884) were recovered in addition to those containing a new species. Globanus drewesisp. nov. is described and additional records, illustrations, and descriptive notes are given for the other two species. A key to all three species of the genus is provided, and a distribution map is presented. The monotypic genus Lobogonus Demange, 1971, which includes L. trilobatus Demange, 1971, from Sierra Leone, mainland western Africa, is revalidated and removed from synonymy under Globanus. Lobogonus is illustrated from a type specimen.

Leptoxyphium is a relatively poorly known genus of sooty moulds in Capnodiaceae (Dothideomycetes). This paper introduces one new species of Leptoxyphium, L. glochidion and the first record of L. kurandae for China. L. glochidion is introduced as a new species based on morphology and molecular data and is compared with related taxa. Descriptions, illustrations and notes are provided for the two species, which are analyzed by ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data. The phylogenetic analysis shows that the two species cluster in Leptoxyphium (Capnodiaceae). L. glochidion separates from other species of the genus, while L. kurandae clustered with the type strain

Colletotrichum sonchicola, sp. nov. from Sonchus sp. (dandelion tribe) in Forlì-Cesena Province, Italy, is introduced using morphological and molecular data. Combined phylogenetic analysis of ITS, GAPDH, CHS, ACT and TUB2 sequence data demonstrate that C. sonchicola is a distinct species within the dematium species complex. The new species is illustrated and compared with related taxa. This provides the first record of a Colletotrichum species from the genus Sonchus.

A new genus, Solomonocartus Legalov, gen. nov., with a new species Solomonocartus bukejsi Legalov, sp. nov. belongs to the tribe Rhinocartini from Guadalcanal Island (Solomon Islands) is described and illustrated. This new genus differs from the genus Rhinocartus Voss, 1922 from Western Africa in the long antennae inserted in the basal third of the rostrum and almost reaching the middle of the elytra, almost straight sides of the pronotum, long ventrite 2, and larger body sizes. It is the first record of the tribe Rhinocartini from the South Pacific and the second find of Rhynchitidae from the Solomon Islands.

A new species of freshwater anomuran crab, Aegla buenoi n. sp., is described. The new taxon was collected from two streams within the Cinzas River basin, Paraná state, Brazil. We used morphological and molecular data (COI mtDNA) to distinguish the new species from its congeners. Aegla buenoi n. sp. is differentiated by morphological diagnostic features of the cephalothorax, chelipeds, second abdominal epimeron, and uropods. Molecular results confirm the separation of A. buenoi n. sp. from closely related species (A. castro Schmitt, 1942, A. lata Bond-Buckup & Buckup, 1994, and A. jacutinga Marçal & Teixeira, 2020). Hence, our study increases the known diversity of aeglids and reports the first species of Aegla from the Cinzas River basin.

Kodaianellissus gibbusis sp. nov. is described from Rawlakot, Azad Jammu & Kashmir (Pakistan), which is first record of the genus Kodaianellissus Wang, Bourgoin & Zhang, 2017 from the country. Morphological characters including male genitalia structure are described and illustrated. A checklist and key to all species of Kodaianellissus are provided. A molecular analysis with morphological characters indicates its placement into the Kodaianellissus.

Abstract Coomansus batxatensis sp. nov., recorded from Vietnam, is described and illustrated and its phylogenetic relationship within the Mononchida is analysed. The molecular data (18S and 28S ribosomal DNA) are provided for the new species. The new species is characterized by small body size (body length, L = 0.7–0.9 mm); buccal cavity sub-rectangular in shape, flattened at base, 21–24 × 12–13 μm or 1.9 (1.7–2.0) times as long as wide; posterior position of dorsal tooth apex (59–63% from the base of buccal cavity); pars refringens vaginae with faint and small (2.5 × 1.7 μm) teardrop-shaped pieces, short pars distalis vaginae; and males with short spicules (50–51.5 μm) with rounded head and conical blade part. The new species is close to Coomansus parvus but differs from it by the smaller buccal cavity size, more posterior position of the dorsal tooth apex, longer tail and presence of males. An updated identification key to Coomansus species and a compendium of all the species known are presented.
