Since 2016, STP has been funding the implementation of greenhouses, viewed as a viable way to guarantee, increase, and diversify production; supply the market; improve farmers' incomes; and mitigate climate change impacts. The greenhouses in selected districts were based on farmers' experiences in horticultural production, available agricultural area, and capacity of rural communities to organize themselves into small farmers' cooperatives. There are also private greenhouse initiatives. This chapter analyzed the current situation of the STP greenhouse project and its socioeconomic contribution to rural communities, proposing actions for its improvement, addressing climate changes and poverty reduction. Despite several weaknesses, mainly linked to lack of knowledge and mastery of technology, greenhouse production represents a viable alternative for horticulture development. Greenhouses, properly exploited, are a mechanism to mitigate climate change effects and ensure an increase in income and consequently reduce poverty and improve individual and collective living conditions.

Cocoa farming in São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) faces several challenges due to its poor socioeconomic context, the adverse impact of climate changes, the complex and limited access to global value chains, and worldwide demand pressure for higher cocoa quality and productivity. This exploratory research investigates potential pathways to a more sustainable organic cocoa (OC) production in STP by mapping the perceptions of the stakeholders involved in its value chain. Qualitative interviews, field observation, and focus group discussions were applied to understand how sustainability dimensions, drivers, impacts, and challenges of OC are perceived and how these three dimensions can be improved and balanced. The gathered perceptions are rather diverse, reflecting the stakeholders’ position and knowledge of the specific contexts and processes. Producers do not perceive how governance is adopting new organizational structures or practices that allow for an effective sustainability improvement. Most stakeholders recognize that market-related factors drive the sustainability adoption and that financing-related constraints challenge their wide implementation. There are trade-offs and power asymmetries in the OC value chain, which manifest differently, due to the governance approaches, processes, overall regulations, and training of producers. An alignment of perceptions and activities as well as a stronger cooperation between cooperatives, private firms, and public institutions is strongly recommended.

This article is an attempt at deconstructing the chronopolitics inherent to the (post)colonial way of thinking about the world. As it is argued, what should replace it is a vision of multiple, overlying temporalities and forms of time awareness, reaching deeper than a literary history reduced to the cycle of colonisation – decolonisation – postcolonial becoming, originating from just a single maritime event: the European exploration and conquest of the world. The essay brings forth a choice of interwoven examples illustrating the variability of local time depths, associated with a plurality of origins, narrations, forms of awareness and cultivation of cultural belonging. It shows the lack of coincidence between the dominant and non-dominant perceptions of the past in such places as the archipelagos of São Tomé and Príncipe, Maldives, the Gambia, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. Their ways of living the global time, as well as embodying significant texts (rather than simply preserving them) stretch far beyond the frameworks created by competing colonial empires, such as the Portuguese or the British one.

Background: Since the emergence of the genus Homo, hominids have occupied a wide variety of environments, facing different selective pressures. Objectives: The aim this study is to compare genotype frequencies between South-West Europe and Peri-equatorial Africa in genes potentially modulators of blood pressure. Methods: The analyzed sample consisted of 325 individuals from Portugal and 226 individuals from Africa (48 from Mozambique and 178 from São Tomé and Príncipe). The following genetic variants were analyzed: intron 4 VNTR in eNOS, rs1050829 in G6PD, -3.7kb α-thalassemic deletion in HBA, rs1800457 in CYB5R3, Hp 1/2 genotype/phenotype in Hp and intron 16 I/D in ACE. Results: Frequencies of genotypes with the 4a allele in eNOS (p<0.001), the G allele in G6PD (p<0.001), the α-3.7 kb in HBA (p <0.001), the C allele in the CYB5R3 (p<0.001) were higher in Peri-equatorial Africa. The Hp 1.1 genotype of Hp has a higher frequency in Peri-equatorial Africa (p=0.002). ACE shows no significant differences. Conclusion: Results show differences in five genetic variants. Conditions of extreme heat and humidity, characteristic of Peri-equatorial Africa, have been associated with increased sodium loss. This study suggests that selected compensatory mechanisms printed in the genome, are nowadays risk factors for hypertension in Peri-equatorial Africa. Keywords: Blood pressure; genetics; Africa.

[email protected] ABSTRACT. This study describes the toponymic profile of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), a former Portuguese colony. Here, we consider (i) its linguistic contact situation, reflected in the toponyms of non-Portuguese etyma (mainly from national languages), and (ii) the structure of the toponymic syntagma in Portuguese. Toponyms are created according to a place's geographic, social, historical, and linguistic reality. Therefore, STP's toponyms are the locus of the Santomean linguistic ecology and memory. Due to its linguistic diversity, the study of Santomean toponymy is transdisciplinary. It contributes to understanding different languages that share São Tomé and Príncipe's ethnicity and linguistic heritage, including multilingual synchronic and/or diachronic conjunctures and the political importance of Portuguese. STP's toponymy expresses a multilingual conjuncture common to the country since the arrival of the Portuguese and (mainly) enslaved Africans from different regions of Africa. Although the Portuguese language and culture have influenced most local toponymy, the Santomean toponymic profile contains endemic linguistic and cultural specificities. Thus, natural phenomena, along with political and historical events, among others, play a role in forming toponyms and characterizing the local toponymy as unique.

Mangroves are highly productive ecosystems with complex adaptations to the transition between freshwater and sea. Mangroves function as nursery habitats for many organisms, providing protection and food sources for early developmental stages of crustaceans and fish, helping to maintain adjacent marine stocks. Mangroves in São Tomé and Príncipe remain poorly studied. This study addresses the importance of a small mangrove stand to ichthyofauna. The main goal of the study was to describe the fish assemblages of the Praia Salgada mangrove stand on Príncipe Island, and assess if variations in the season, tide, and mangrove zone affected fish distribution. Fish assemblages were sampled with mosquito nets during the rainy and dry seasons, and neap and spring tides, while environmental parameters such as water depth, temperature, pH, and salinity measurements were taken. The characteristics of the water column were affected by a sandbank that developed between sampling seasons, impacting on the dynamics of the water and biological exchanges between the mangrove stand and the adjacent marine environment. The study identified 14 fish species occurring in the Praia Salgada mangrove stand from a total of 772 specimens caught. Five species were recorded for the first time as occurring in the country’s mangrove areas, namely Caranx latus, Ethmalosa fimbriata, Mugil curema, Gobioides cf. africanus, and Citharus cf. linguatula. Most of the reported species are of commercial interest, and were predominantly juveniles, suggesting that the mangrove ecosystem provides a nursery function for several species. Some species revealed preferences for either the upper or lower part of the mangrove forest. The size of fish sampled tended to be bigger during the dry season, especially for the Mugilidae, Aplocheilichthys spilauchen and Gobiidae groups. E. fimbriata and Eucinostomus melanopterus displayed similar sizes between seasons. The average quantity of fish caught per day in the rainy season was three times higher than in the dry season. The fish species distribution in the mangrove stand varied significantly according to the season and mangrove zone. The overall results suggest that the Praia Salgada mangrove stand provides a nursery function for several of the studied fish species.

Abstract Background With effective vector control and case management, substantial progress has been made towards eliminating malaria on the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe (STP). This study assessed the dynamic changes in the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum, the anti-malarial drug resistance mutations, and malaria treatment outcomes between 2010 and 2016 to provide insights for the prevention of malaria rebounding. Methods Polymorphic regions of merozoite surface proteins 1 and 2 (msp1 and msp2) were sequenced in 118 dried blood spots (DBSs) collected from malaria patients who had visited the Central Hospital in 2010–2016. Mutations in the multi-drug resistance I (pfmdr1), chloroquine resistance transporter (pfcrt), and kelch 13 (pfk13) genes were analysed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) and sequencing in 111 DBSs. A total of 7482 cases that completed a 28-day follow-up were evaluated for treatment outcomes based on the microscopic results. Regression models were used to characterize factors associated with levels of parasite density and treatment failures. Results Parasite strains in STP showed significant changes during and after the peak incidence in 2012. The prevalent allelic type in msp1 changed from K1 to MAD20, and that in msp2 changed from 3D7/IC to FC27. The dominant alleles of drug-resistance markers were pfmdr1 86Y, 184F, D1246, and pfcrt 76 T (Y-F-D-T, 51.4%). The average parasite density in malaria cases declined threefold from low-transmission (2010–2013) to pre-elimination period (2014–2016). Logistic regression models showed that patients with younger age (OR for age = 0.97–0.98, p < 0.001), higher initial parasite density (log10-transformed, OR = 1.44, p < 0.001), and receiving quinine treatment (compared to artemisinin-based combination therapy, OR = 1.91–1.96, p < 0.001) were more likely to experience treatment failures during follow-up. Conclusions Plasmodium falciparum in STP had experienced changes in prevalent strains, and increased mutation frequencies in drug-resistance genes from the low-transmission to the pre-elimination settings. Notably, patients with younger age and receiving quinine treatment were more likely to show parasitological treatment failure during follow-up. Therapeutic efficacy should be carefully monitored to inform future treatment policy in STP.
