The novelty of the research project reported in this paper is the coupling of hydrological and hydraulic modeling which are based on the first principal of fluid mechanics for the simulation of flash floods at Wadi Elarish watershed to optimize the a new location of another dam rather than Elrawfa dam which already exist. Results show that, the optimum scenario is obtained by the construction of the west dam. As a direct result of this dam, the downstream inundated area can be reduced up to 15.7 % as function of reservoir available storage behind the dam. Furthermore, calculations showed that the reduction rate of inundated area for 50-year floods is largely more than 100-year floods, implies the high ability of west dam on flood control especially for floods with shorter return period.

In the flood prone areas of Bangladesh, local people have adapted to flooding. Essentially, properties are protected against flooding by constructing villages in the highlands on natural levees, while using lowlands as agricultural fields during the dry season. It remains to spread flood inundation condition and exempts the necessity of strengthening measures against flooding. This study aims to clarify the status of self, community, and public assistance for flood disasters in flood prone areas of Northeast Bangladesh based on a questionnaire survey. We extracted similarities and differences between local people’s flood responses by comparing our findings to those of a similar study on a 2006 flood in the Sendai River Basin, Japan. The effects of preventive flood mitigation measures such as selection of house location are quantitatively confirmed. Maximum inundation depth and duration for houses is approximately 10% less than that for agricultural fields. The study reveals that both areas have evacuation activities, although factors motivating evacuation differ.

Flood disasters frequently occurred in Jember Regency, East Java. It is usually caused by the overflow of the Tanggul River in the rainy season, especially in the downstream area. Flood control could be done by building dams, embankments, shortcuts, and other technical flood protections. Meanwhile, mitigation efforts such as developing thematic maps of flood inundation need to be done to minimize losses caused by the flood. This study aims to design a flood mitigation strategy technically. The flood control structure was proposed by designing a shortcut in Kali Tanggul. Its performance was analyzed to reduce flood inundation in the Tanggul watershed. The flood inundation modeling was carried out using spatial analysis using ArcGIS 10.1 and hydraulic analysis using HECRAS 5.0.3. Flood inundation results were compared with the Tanggul watershed flood map developed by UPT PUSDA Lumajang. Based on modeling results, flood control using shortcuts is considered an effective strategy for flood mitigation. It was indicated by the reduction of flood inundation distributions, flood inundation height, and flood-affected areas. The results show that the flood height decrease 0.47 up to 0.56 m
