We report on a novel technique of surface texturing of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) foil in the presence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This approach provides a variable surface morphology of PET evenly decorated with AgNPs. Surface texturing occurred in silver nanoparticle colloids of different concentrations under the action of pulse excimer laser. Surface morphology of PET immobilized with AgNPs was observed by AFM and FEGSEM. Atomic concentration of silver was determined by XPS. A presented concentration-controlled procedure of surface texturing of PET in the presence of silver colloids leads to a highly nanoparticle-enriched polymer surface with a variable morphology and uniform nanoparticle distribution.

A plasma technology has been developed for the production of chipboard with vitreous protective decorative coatings. To prevent high temperatures of the plasma jet from being applied to the front surface of the chipboard, an intermediate layer was applied, which included a mixture of sodium liquid glass with colored glass powders based on profiled and sheet cullet. The technology of a two-stage deposition of an intermediate layer before plasma spraying of the main vitreous coating has been developed. The technology provides for the preliminary front surface preparation and the liquid glass application on a wood chipboard, the intermediate layer application and subsequent drying at 95 °C. The adhesion strength of the intermediate layer with the matrix was 1.6–1.8 MPa. The optimal technological parameters of plasma-chemical modification of a protective decorative coating based on fine powders of sheet and profiled glasses have been established: the power of an electric arc plasma installation operation is 8 kW, the flow rate of argon plasma gas - 2.0 m3 /hour. It is shown that the water resistance of protective decorative coatings based on profiled and sheet glass is III hydrolytic class. Vitreous coatings had high reliability and durability, in particular, acid resistance, alkali resistance and microhardness. Due to the electric arc plasma installations use for plasma-chemical modification of protective decorative coatings based on profiled and sheet glass cullet, the technology is resource and energy efficient, and is also recommended for introduction both in furniture industry and in the construction industry.

The control of surface chemistry and topography has great technological relevance for numerous applications of polymers in textiles, adhesives, coatings, packaging, membranes, and biomedical implants. Conventionally, chemical modification of polymer surfaces has been achieved through kinetically governed practices that allow little control over the final surface composition or morphology. These chemically generated surfaces are also prone to reconstruction. Hence the development of inexpensive, scaleable routes to impart stable and more complex chemical functionality to polymer surfaces continues to be an active area of research. Apart from surface chemistry, the topography of a polymer surface often plays a determinant role in the adhesive, optical, and wetting characteristics of the surface. Consequently methods to produce surfaces of controlled texture are also of interest. Toward these goals, new, statistical, mechanics-based theoretical approaches, coupled with increased computing power, can now facilitate the first-principles design of polymer surfaces that are chemically and structurally “tailored” for a given application. In this article, we review some of the recent, significant developments in this area.

This work presents the results of pulsed plasma-chemical modification of silicon dioxide nanopowder with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO@SiO2). The obtained ZnO@SiO2 powders were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray phase analysis. The size of the synthesized particles was in the range of 20–100[Formula: see text]nm. The photocatalytic characteristics of ZnO@SiO2 were studied. When exposed to ultraviolet radiation, the methylene blue (MB) decomposes efficiently. Two samples characterized by the content of silicon tetrachloride in the initial mixture were synthesized. The band gap estimated from the absorption spectra calculated from the diffuse reflectance spectra for these samples was 2.4[Formula: see text]eV and 2.95[Formula: see text]eV for indirect transitions and 3.03[Formula: see text]eV and 3.24[Formula: see text]eV for direct allowed transitions.
