Abstract The variability of intermediate water (IW) east of Taiwan was investigated utilizing 17 months of long-term, continuous and synchronous measurements of temperature, salinity and current from mooring sites deployed at 122ºE/23ºN from January 2016 to May 2017. For the first time, we prove that the intraseasonal variability in the IW within significant periods of ~80 days was caused by mesoscale eddies propagating westward from the Subtropic Counter Current (STCC) area. The correlation coefficients between sea level anomalies (SLAs) and the Kuroshio, and between SLAs and the minimum salinity in the intermediate layer, were 0.63 and 0.52, respectively. The anticyclonic (cyclonic) eddies from the STCC, increased (decreased) the speed of the Kuroshio as well as increase (decrease) the temperature and salinity in the 400–600 m in east of Taiwan. Combines Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic (AVISO) products data, showed that temperature and salinity increased (decreased) in the intermediate layer due to the downward (upward) vertical movement of the water mass by anticyclonic (cyclonic) eddies. Anticyclonic eddies strengthened the Kuroshio and benefitted SCSIW flowing through the Luzon Strait to enhance salinity, while cyclonic eddies weakened the Kuroshio and favored relatively low-salt NPIW, in the area east of Taiwan.

Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts coated on honeycomb-shaped stainless STS-444 steel substrates with a γ-Al2O3 intermediate layer were prepared using a conventional washcoating method. The intermediate layer was formed on the substrate surface through oxidation using pack cementation. The monolithic catalysts with the intermediate layer were fabricated for potential applications to pre-turbocharger catalysts, which suffer from severe conditions such as vibrations of the engine and high flow rates of exhaust gas. Adhesive strength tests and simultaneous oxidation reactions of CO and C3H6 were carried out for the Pt/γ-Al2O3 monolithic catalysts with and without the intermediate layer. The catalysts with an intermediate layer showed much stronger adhesion than the catalysts without an intermediate layer. Thus, the formation of a γ-Al2O3 intermediate layer by surface oxidation through pack cementation facilitated a significant enhancement of the catalyst adhesion strength without catalytic performance degradation.

The surface layer of DI50-2 cast iron after its processing by electric contact welding has been investigated by methods of X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. A 50HVA steel strip was used as a filler material. Processing technologies were used with the creation of an intermediate layer of nickel powder PC-12N-01 and without it. Results on phase composition, substructure and residual stresses are obtained. The system under study consists of a-Fe and у-Fe phases. Substructure parameters (microstrain and block refinement) have the same values for different modes of electrical contact welding. Residual stresses are of a tensile nature and decrease when an intermediate layer of nickel powder material is created. The main mechanism of their formation is thermal effects on the material processed by electrocontact welding. Cracks may form after electrical contact welding of the tape. They are oriented mainly parallel to the surface to be treated and are due to the presence of a large temperature gradient.

Abstract It has long been known from measurements that buoyant motions cause the mean-velocity profile (MVP) in thermally-stratified, wall-bounded turbulent flows to significantly deviate from its constant-density counterpart. Theoretical analysis has restricted attention to an “intermediate layer” of the MVP, akin to the celebrated “log layer” in the constant-density case. Here, for thermally-stratified plane-Couette flows, we study the shape and scaling of the whole MVP. We elucidate the mechanisms that dictate the shape of the MVP by using the framework of the spectral link (Gioia et al.; 2010), and obtain scaling laws for the whole MVP by generalizing the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory.

AbstractWe present an unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) method for a lip-reading model that is an image-based speech recognition model. Most of conventional UDA methods cannot be applied when the adaptation data consists of an unknown class, such as out-of-vocabulary words. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal knowledge distillation (KD)-based domain adaptation method, where we use the intermediate layer output in the audio-based speech recognition model as a teacher for the unlabeled adaptation data. Because the audio signal contains more information for recognizing speech than lip images, the knowledge of the audio-based model can be used as a powerful teacher in cases where the unlabeled adaptation data consists of audio-visual parallel data. In addition, because the proposed intermediate-layer-based KD can express the teacher as the sub-class (sub-word)-level representation, this method allows us to use the data of unknown classes for the adaptation. Through experiments on an image-based word recognition task, we demonstrate that the proposed approach can not only improve the UDA performance but can also use the unknown-class adaptation data.
