Liquid side mass transfer coefficient was measured for absorption of oxygen in non-Newtonian liquids. The experiments were carried out in a laboratory absorption bead column in which the liquid flowed over a single vertical row of spheres without vertical spaces between elements and/or with spaces of 0.2 cm between elements. The results were described by correlation equations involving dimensionless groups modified for Ellis flow model.

Absorption of oxygen into water and aqueous solutions of poly(acrylamides) was studied in an absorber with a wetted sphere. The effects of changes in the liquid flow rate and the polymer concentration on the liquid side mass transfer coefficient were examined. The results are expressed by correlations between dimensionless criteria modified for non-Newtonian liquids whose flow curve can be described by the Ostwald-de Waele model.

Packing size effects on the fluid dynamics in an external-loop packed bubble column with Raschig rings of three different effective diameters (5, 14 and 41 mm) in the riser were investigated. The overall gas holdup, liquid circulating velocity and gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient were respectively measured by volume expansion method, tracer-response method and dynamic oxygen-absorption technique. CFD simulation with the Euler-Euler two-fluid method was used to predict the liquid circulating velocity by treating the packing as a porous medium. Compared to the empty column, the gas holdup was found to increase with the presence of packing, however, the liquid circulating velocity and gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient may increase or decrease. Specifically, the gas holdup increases with the decrease of packing size, while the liquid circulating velocity is on the contrary, which induces the maximal gas-liquid mass transfer rate at packing diameter of 14 mm.

Pretreatment of seawater before reverse osmosis (RO) processes with dispersed air flotation involves a change in oxygen concentration in seawater. In order to understand this phenomenon, a series of experimental aeration studies was conducted. Aeration tests were performed under different operating conditions of seawater temperature, flow rate of the air and depth of the water in the aeration tank. The experimental results show that the overall mass transfer coefficient increases by increasing air flow rate. A measured increase in the overall mass transfer coefficient was observed with elevation of the temperature from 24 to 38 °C. The estimated value of activation energy of oxygen absorption in seawater is 42.5 kJ/mol. The value of the overall mass transfer coefficient is found to be affected by diffuser type and stirrer speed as these parameters influence the bubble size and the surface area available for mass transfer of oxygen from air bubbles to seawater.

The gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient was determined by the dynamic oxygen absorption technique using a polarographic dissolved oxygen probe and the gas-liquid interfacial area was measured using dual-tip conductivity probes in a bubble column slurry reactor. Feed-forward back propagation neural network models were employed to predict the gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient and liquid-side mass transfer coefficient for Alcohol/Ether fuel direct synthesis system in a commercial-scale bubble column slurry reactor. And the effects of various axial locations, superficial gas velocity and solid concentration on the gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient kLaL and liquid-side mass transfer coefficient kL were discussed in detail in the range of operating variables investigated.
