The 1H NMR spectra of the charge-transfer complex of 1-ethyl-4-methoxycarbonylpyridinium iodide have been recorded in various dipolar aprotic solvents. An attempt is made to interpret the chemical shifts in terms of Buckingham's reaction field equation for spherical cavities. A linear dependence has been found between the δ(2,6) values and the square of dielectric function for a spherical cavity, which confirms the validity of the Buckingham equation for this class of compounds.

The charge-transfer (CT) complexes of some N-arylcarbamates as donors with a number of π-acceptors have been studied spectrophotometrically. The Lewis basicities of the N-arylcarbamates as well as the types of interactions are discussed. The 1H-NMR spectra of some CT complexes with both 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) and 7,7,8,8 tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) indicate a decrease of the electron density on the donor part of the complex.

The 1H and 13C NMR spectra have been measured of six trans-azobenzenes substituted at 2 and 2’ positions with substituents favourable for complex formation with a metal (OH, NH2, NHCOCH3, COOH). From the standpoint of NMR such substituted trans-azobenzenes are present in solution in a rapid equilibrium following from rotation around the bond between C-1 of phenyl group and N atom of azo linkage. The predominant form has the substituent in the syn-position with respect to the free electron pair of the nearer azo nitrogen atom. The equilibrium is affected by dipolar aprotic solvents (such as hexadeuteriodimethyl sulfoxide) by decreasing the presence of the predominant form by 1 to 11%.

The charge transfer complexes of 2,3- (I) and 2,6-Dimethylnaphthalenes (II) as electron donors with tri- and di-nitrobenzenes as electron acceptors are prepared and investigated by element analysis, IR. 1H nmr and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that I yields CT complexes of 1:1 type only while II is capable of forming 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (donor: acceptor) compounds. The spectral characteristics of the CT complexes are pointed out and discussed. The difference in the donor behaviour between I and II is explained in the light of PPP-MO calculations.

Charge transfer complexes (CTC) can be readily introduced into materials by cohydrolysis-copolymerisation of bis-silylated ter-thiophenes as precursors with TMOS and TEOS in the presence of TCNQ. CTC formation is shown in the visible spectrum of the xerogel by the band at 850 nm characteristic of the TCNQ·- radical anion. Vibrational spectra have shown that strong vibration of C≡N bond at 2184, 2120 and 1595 cm-1 as peaks characteristics of CTC. The CTC bands are weak and the complex is easily destroyed by washing with acetone, which removes the TCNQ. The gelification effect of the charge transfer complexes on the hybrid materials of 2,5’’- bis(trime thoxysilyl)terthiophene/TCNQ/ TMOS showed that the peak with distance of more than 11.68 Å, formed by precursors and matrices, as a lamellar structure. The birefringence of xerogel BTS3T in presence of alkoxysilane showed that the value is near the detection limit of 0.1 – 0.4 x 10-3, which is weaker than BTS3T / THF with the birefringence value of 4.5 x 10-3.

Charge-transfer (CT) complexation between some [2.2]- and [2.2.2]paracyclophane-carbamates as donors with 2,3-dichloro-5.6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDO ) as well as tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) as π-acceptors has been evidenced by VIS. 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. The site of interaction in the two different donor systems was determined. The results reveal no contribution of the nitrogen lone pair electrons of the carbamate functional group in the CT complexation. and the interaction is mainly of π-π* type. In addition, the existence of the transannular electronic interactions in [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives is responsible for CT complex formation.

During a reinvestigation of the 13C NMR spectra of 1-fluoronaphthalene (1) and of 2-fluoronaphthalene (2) at 20 and 25.16 MHz, uncertainties that existed in the literature about signal assignments for 1 could be cleared. In the spectral analyses for 2 given so far, five out of ten signals were incorrectly assigned. The corrected assignment is supported by extensive 13C{1H} double resonance experiments, by recording of proton-coupled 13C and 13C{19F} spectra and by off-resonance 13C{1H} noise-decoupling. The results show a strong + M-effect of the fluorine substituents on 13C chemical shifts similar to the effects of OH and OCH3 groups. 1H NMR spectra of 1 and 2 could be partially assigned by decoupling of the 19F resonances and by iterative analysis.
