We propose a flexible capacitive pressure sensor that utilizes porous polydimethylsiloxane elastomer with zinc oxide nanowire as nanocomposite dielectric layer via a simple porogen-assisted process. With the incorporation of nanowires into the porous elastomer, our capacitive pressure sensor is not only highly responsive to subtle stimuli but vigorously so to gentle touch and verbal stimulation from 0 to 50 kPa. The fabricated zinc oxide nanowire–porous polydimethylsiloxane sensor exhibits superior sensitivity of 0.717 kPa−1, 0.360 kPa−1, and 0.200 kPa−1 at the pressure regimes of 0–50 Pa, 50–1000 Pa, and 1000–3000 Pa, respectively, presenting an approximate enhancement by 21−100 times when compared to that of a flat polydimethylsiloxane device. The nanocomposite dielectric layer also reveals an ultralow detection limit of 1.0 Pa, good stability, and durability after 4000 loading–unloading cycles, making it capable of perception of various human motions, such as finger bending, calligraphy writing, throat vibration, and airflow blowing. A proof-of-concept trial in hydrostatic water pressure sensing has been demonstrated with the proposed sensors, which can detect tiny changes in water pressure and may be helpful for underwater sensing research. This work brings out the efficacy of constructing wearable capacitive pressure sensors based on a porous dielectric hybrid with stress-sensitive nanostructures, providing wide prospective applications in wearable electronics, health monitoring, and smart artificial robotics/prosthetics.

Abstract A Ca2+ selective microelectrode was proposed through electrodepositing graphene oxide (GO) on carbon fiber as an efficient ion-electron transfer layer. The gold leaves were further synthesized at GO surface to increase the specific surface area and provide a substrate for assembly of the specific ligands for Ca2+. GO with negative charges greatly facilitated the electron transfer process from the recognition center to electrode surface, resulting in the apparently enhanced sensitivity towards Ca2+. Moreover, the developed ion-selective microelectrode exhibited good selectivity to Ca2+, and a good linear range from 10 μM to 10 mM with a detection limit of 5.91±0.46 μM.

A compact, sensitive laser-based absorption sensor for multispecies monitoring of methane (CH4), acetylene (C2H2) and ammonia (NH3) was developed using a compact multipass gas cell. The gas cell is 8.8 cm long and has an effective optical path length of 3.0 m with a sampling volume of 75 mL. The sensor is composed of three fiber-coupled distributed feedback lasers operating near 1512 nm, 1532 nm and 1654 nm, an InGaAs photodetector and a custom-designed software for data acquisition, signal processing and display. The lasers were scanned over the target absorption features at 1 Hz. First-harmonic-normalized wavelength modulation spectroscopy (f = 3 kHz) with the second harmonic detection (WMS-2f/1f) is employed to eliminate the unwanted power fluctuations of the transmitted laser caused by aerosol/particles scattering, absorption and beam-steering. The multispecies sensor has excellent linear responses (R2 > 0.997) within the gas concentration range of 1–1000 ppm and shows a detection limit of 0.32 ppm for CH4, 0.16 ppm for C2H2 and 0.23 ppm for NH3 at 1 s response time. The Allan–Werle deviation analysis verifies the long-term stability of the sensor, indicating a minimal detection limit of 20–34 ppb were achieved after 60–148 s integration time. Flow test of the portable multispecies sensor is also demonstrated in this work.

Pesticides are a large and heterogenous group of chemicals with a complex geographic distribution in the environment. The purpose of this study was to explore the geographic distribution of pesticides in Danish drinking water and identify potential patterns in the grouping of pesticides. Our data included 899,169 analyses of 167 pesticides and metabolites, of which 55 were identified above the detection limit. Pesticide patterns were defined by (1) pesticide groups based on chemical structure and pesticide–metabolite relations and (2) an exploratory factor analysis identifying underlying patterns of related pesticides within waterworks. The geographic distribution was evaluated by mapping the pesticide categories for groups and factor components, namely those detected, quantified, above quality standards, and not analysed. We identified five and seven factor components for the periods 2002–2011 and 2012–2018, respectively. In total, 16 pesticide groups were identified, of which six were representative in space and time with regards to the number of waterworks and analyses, namely benzothiazinone, benzonitriles, organophosphates, phenoxy herbicides, triazines, and triazinones. Pesticide mapping identified areas where multiple pesticides were detected, indicating areas with a higher pesticide burden. The results contribute to a better understanding of the pesticide pattern in Danish drinking water and may contribute to exposure assessments for future epidemiological studies.

Abstract With the development of research, it was found that the dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was limited by the tedious extraction process and toxic extractant. A thermo-switchable deep eutectic solvent (DES) was applied to the DLLME as a green extractant in this paper. The DES can be dispersed and aggregated by shaking and heating in the water during the extraction process due to the surfactant and thermo-switchable properties, which shortened the extraction time as low as 5 minutes. The feasibility of the developed method was verified using 4 organophosphorus pesticides and 5 pyrethroids as targets in simulated water samples, which showed good precision (RSD%, 0.8-9.7, n=3) and low detection limit (0.16-0.81 µg L−1, S/N = 3) under the optimal extraction conditions. This method was used to detect the pesticide content in four natural rivers in Xi'an, and the recoveries of these spiked samples at three concentrations levels were among 81–113%. This is the first time to combine the toxic-free and thermo-switchable properties of DES in DLLME to proposes a simple, fast, effective, and green pretreatment method.

The high conductivity of graphene material (or its derivatives) and its very large surface area enhance the direct electron transfer, improving non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors sensitivity and its other characteristics. The offered large pores facilitate analyte transport enabling glucose detection even at very low concentration values. In the current review paper we classified the enzymeless graphene-based glucose electrocatalysts’ synthesis methods that have been followed into the last few years into four main categories: (i) direct growth of graphene (or oxides) on metallic substrates, (ii) in-situ growth of metallic nanoparticles into graphene (or oxides) matrix, (iii) laser-induced graphene electrodes and (iv) polymer functionalized graphene (or oxides) electrodes. The increment of the specific surface area and the high degree reduction of the electrode internal resistance were recognized as their common targets. Analyzing glucose electrooxidation mechanism over Cu- Co- and Ni-(oxide)/graphene (or derivative) electrocatalysts, we deduced that glucose electrochemical sensing properties, such as sensitivity, detection limit and linear detection limit, totally depend on the route of the mass and charge transport between metal(II)/metal(III); and so both (specific area and internal resistance) should have the optimum values.

Glutathione (GSH) is an important antioxidant and free radical scavenger that converts harmful toxins into harmless substances and excretes them out of the body. In the present study, we successfully prepared single-atom iron oxide-nanoparticle (Fe-NP)-modified nanodiamonds (NDs) named Fe-NDs via a one-pot in situ reduction method. This nanozyme functionally mimics two major enzymes, namely, peroxidase and oxidase. Accordingly, a colorimetric sensing platform was designed to detect hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and GSH. Owing to their peroxidase-like activity, Fe-NDs can oxidize colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue with sufficient linearity at H2O2 concentrations of 1–60 μM and with a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Furthermore, using different concentrations of GSH, oxidized TMB can be reduced to TMB, and the color change from blue to nearly colorless can be observed by the naked eye (linear range, 1–25 μM; detection limit, 0.072 μM). The established colorimetric method based on oxidase-like activity can be successfully used to detect reduced GSH in tablets and injections with good selectivity and high sensitivity. The results of this study exhibited reliable consistency with the detection results obtained using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Therefore, the Fe-NDs colorimetric sensor designed in this study offers adequate accuracy and sensitivity.

AbstractFrom 2007 to 2013, simultaneous radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) measurements were conducted in a total of 3534 residential homes in 34 metropolitan areas covering 71% of the Canadian population. While radon levels were above the detector’s detection limit in almost all homes, thoron concentrations were measurable in only 1738 homes. When analysis was limited to homes where thoron concentrations exceeded the detection limit, a pooled analysis confirmed that thoron is log-normally distributed in the indoor environment, and the distribution was characterized by a population-weighted geometric mean of 13 Bq/m3 and a geometric standard deviation of 1.89. Thoron contribution to indoor radon dose varied widely, ranging from 1.3 to 32% geographically. This study indicated that on average, thoron contributes 4% of the radiation dose due to total indoor radon exposure (222Rn and 220Rn) in Canada.
